You must be very careful when studying other religions. It can lead to a crisis of your own faith. If your belief in God is solid then there is no point to be studying other religions. They should hold no real interest to you. You should be in the world but have no part of the world.
In everything you do, you should be doing it to the glory of God. The work you do every day should be done giving thanks and glory to God. How can studying another religion give thanks and glory to God?

A way that studying other religions, as stated in an earlier post, can glorify God is if you were trying to convert someone of that religion. You can't just tell someone "Oh hay my religion is right yours is wrong" if you have no idea what the religion is about. That is ignorance and hypocrisy, and the reason no one wants to convert. We will be able to convert more people, thus glorifying God.

There is no reason to study other religions. If a person is seriously seeking God there is only one real question they need to answer: What do you think of Jesus and what are you going to do about him?
A person wanting proof that the word of God is true and real is really just seeking an argument. The proof is in a person's heart. That is where the real proof that Jesus is real is found also. It is based on your personal relationship with Jesus and not something that can be seen. If that were the case then only people way evidence and seek proof and logic would come to God.
You don't need to know what another person believes to show him God. That is an excuse to go searching other religions. Our soul must be cultivated like a garden pulling out all unnecessary weeds (like other beliefs that do not fit our own) and our will must be sanctified so that we are a christian through and through. Think on this thought every day "What can I do or should I do today that I may receive the benefits of the Lord Jesus Christ into my life." Your life must be like this in order to be a fulfilled christian. It should be: I must hear, I must listen, I must identify, I must admit, I must follow, I must devote and I must dedicate my life fully to follow Jesus where ever He goes and He leads me until the day I die and I join him in heaven.
He will give you the words to speak when you witness so that you do not have to waste your time studying other religions, instead you can spend the time with Jesus.

There is one reason to study other religions--so that you understand people better and know how to approach them when trying to spread Christ's light. Plus it gives people of other religions a reason to study Christianity.

You know, as I meditate on that, I am not really sure if it is that at all. Yes, Christ will gives us words, but if there is fear or doubt, what good will it do? If I approach an Atheist, I used to have fear that I will get back into a corner because of my faith in God. They think that they won or saw me as weak because of that fear. And when we have that fear, the words of Christ won't be made effective until you get over that fear. Sometimes, that fear makes us not to even open our mouths.

Like I said, I am studying Atheism. I used to been an Atheist before I was a Christian. But by studying Atheism, I can actually take their concerns and turn it back around. And if we do not study, I am afraid we would be easier to fall into temptations or deception if it comes across something we do not know.

I agree with Cappie that studying another religion is a red flag. I do not think that it helps you to talk to another person of another religion. I think it drags you into their world and not them into your world.

I am a sinner... "1 John 1:8"

You speak of fear when facing a person of a different belief and NO amount of studying that belief will take away our fears. Only our Father in Heaven and his Holy Word can relieve our fears. 1 John 4:18 tells us "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love" so if you think that you can ease your fears through something that is not of God, then you're very wrong. No outside study, no matter how rich, will do that. It takes knowledge and understand of HIS Word and not some other book written that is not of God. If you knew the Bible and believed in it's Words and LIVED the Word of the Lord, then you wouldn't fear what some atheist would say to you or their intimidation tactics. If we love the Lord and are fully focused on His Will and what His word tells us, we have no need to any other study on religions.

Christianity is the TRUTH. 1 God and only 1 way to get to him and that is through his son Jesus Christ. Why waste your time on false doctrines/teachings, when everything you need to be a faithful servant of the Lord and help bring others to Him is in the bible?

1 Timothy 1:4-5 "nor devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God's work - which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."

I did not say that. True, God can give us the words to speak, but do we always listen to them? Besides, you only countered one of my two arguments. Others view Christians as hypocrites, and this is one of the reasons. If you expect others to listen, you must listen as well.

Drags? You think we should be "dragging" them into Christianity? Where in the Bible do you get that idea? If we understand other religions, those people will feel more inclined to understand Christianity. If we try to force people to become Christians, we're no better than those of the Crusades.

Everyone here knows that Christianity is the truth. That's why we're in this guild. That's not the issue. We know other religions are false--with that in mind, what harm is there in studying them? There's a huge difference between devoting yourself to lies and looking into them. With the attitude you suggest, we're walking up to people and saying "Your life is a lie, come to the truth." Will they listen? I doubt it. An approach that I've found works better is "Why don't you let me teach you and decide for yourself what to believe?" With this attitude, fewer people will shut you out, and more people will at least listen, if nothing else.

The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."

...Saved by God's grace "Acts 15:11"

Everyone here knows that Christianity is the truth. That's why we're in this guild. That's not the issue. We know other religions are false--with that in mind, what harm is there in studying them? There's a huge difference between devoting yourself to lies and looking into them. With the attitude you suggest, we're walking up to people and saying "Your life is a lie, come to the truth." Will they listen? I doubt it. An approach that I've found works better is "Why don't you let me teach you and decide for yourself what to believe?" With this attitude, fewer people will shut you out, and more people will at least listen, if nothing else.
I am a sinner... "1 John 1:8"

I have "suggested" nothing. My point is that anything you need to bring others to Christ is in the Bible, not in some other book. We are to do that in love with humility not in a "you're wrong, I'm right, so you must believe" attitude.

We shouldn't be looking into lies at all, the only thing we should seek is truth and the only book that it is found in is the Bible. So the harm is that your "looking into" lies takes away from the time we should be spending with God.

Show me the verses in the bible where it says we should know about another person's beliefs to bring them to Christ? Where in the bible does it say it's okay to look into lies and deceitful things?

For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to deceive and lead astray, if possible, even the elect (God's chosen ones).
Mark 13:22 (Amplified Bible)

- dangerous? I think so, the enemy will try to use all sort of things to 'lead you astray'.

What does God say about it? ask Him, see what Hes saying, His Word is final

and I agree that you need to check your motives too.. thats always a good thing with everything that you do smile

So you do not believe that Christ will give you the words to speak to them?

Where in the Bible does it say not to? It does not necessarily take away your time spent with God. You can pray and ask God to show you why they believe something, and what you can do about it. If we know that it's a lie, and we're still praying as we're looking into it, then what harm is there in looking into it? If you are strong in your faith, nothing can cause doubt, so what's wrong with looking at these things? Show me a verse in the Bible that specifically says you cannot look at other people's religions in an attempt to help them.

you are correct, the Bible does not say that we should not study other religions specifically.

After prayer and consideration of this all I still believe that there is no need to study other religions or beliefs. All I need to help guide a person to Jesus is the Lord Himself, the Bible, constant prayer, and my personal walk with him. If those don't work then that person has a hardened heart and no amount of conversing will change that all that's left is to pray for them as much as possible.

that is all I have to say on this matter and will not discuss it further.

So you do not believe that Christ will give you the words to speak to them?

I did not say that. True, God can give us the words to speak, but do we always listen to them? Besides, you only countered one of my two arguments. Others view Christians as hypocrites, and this is one of the reasons. If you expect others to listen, you must listen as well.

When they speak to you, you listen but that does not mean you must study their religion. A person who is open, willing, and ready to receive Christ will be more interested in what you say rather then how much you know about their beliefs.

The only person who should be interested in studying other religions would be a deprogramer. They have to be firmly rooted in the word of God and called to do such a task. Studying another religion really serves no purpose when witnessing and should not be studied just for kicks.

If you do not hear God when witnessing well enough to give you the words you need then you need to spend more time with God before you witness or take someone more mature in the word with you.
