I think the "Evil" campaign you started amply demonstrates how this works out. We spent several weeks just trying to decide where we were going to go, and what we were going to do, and how we were going to do it. And then everyone just disappeared or walked off on their own because a consensus couldn't be reached. Having a very clear objective (and actually having a reason beyond "We're all PCs" to even stick together) would have potentially lead to that game continuing a little longer.

That's what my current game is; basically, the baddies in the story start messing up the fun, so our beloved heroes essentially band together to fend the guys off. This is because they have a common goal: They want what they're competing for, but the bad guys are making away with all the stuff! If they want a chance at the prizes, they have to deal with these guys first, or the festival is basically ruined. In short, their unity is the need for wealth, glory, and the handkerchiefs of a score of young ladies. Also, the host of the festival is being kidnapped, along with her five escorts.
At the start of the game, everyone is doing their own thing, completely split up. They could be buying things, relaxing at a portable tavern, chatting up the local townsfolk, or whatever else. But, once the action starts, the objective is easily established, and the only way one can go is forward.

I'd vote for an all dwarf party like in my rl game.

You cannot outright say no if I convince everyone to do it.
Brothers of Moradin unite!

I've been mulling over the idea for a character that I could try and whip up. I like making characters, even if nothing comes of it...
Edit: but it'd be human, because I need two first level feats to make it work.

So if everyone but you played dwarves you wouldn't?
I smell discrimination. Some of you people are terrible.

Well... if I play a dwarf, I can't take Vow of Poverty at first level. That means I miss out on at least two bonus feats. ******** that!

Eternality_Cannon You're all a load of hypocrites who refuse to let a grudge go. Welcome to gaia~ or the whole internet I should say lol. Also you ever try to run a game over IM? MSN etc. because you don't run in to this problem~ Mongooseh Basically you have to understand the nature of playing by post. The pace of it means if you throw choices at your players they will spend the little time they have which they'd usually use posting their roleplaying actions to reply to someone else in the rp to decide upon something. It gets even worse when people suddenly disappear when they're being waited upon. "You can do x, y, z, a, b and c. What do you want to do?" IC: "I'd like to do x, z, and c" Player 1. "But I'd like to do y, a and b" Player 2. "I agree with player 1 since it seems more fun but player 2 has chosen the more practical options. Lets let player 4 decide!" Player 3. Player 4 is missing for a week before, "I'd rather not make a decision decide it amongst yourselves because I do not care." OOC: Week wasted, players are now probably disinterested and game ends unless gm tasers it back into submission. I LOVE D&D not gonna love and I LOVE a good DM you hook me up with a good DM and I will sit and play D&D over IM 8+ hours a day/night every day/night for months and months~ but over pbp? I might post once or twice before getting utterly bored of having to wait days before being able to post again cause of missing players and/or DM. I am a spur of the moment person~ I don't plan things out I just jump right into a situation and sees what happens~ and so need quick replies.
