If you compare the white shirt and the colour of her skin, it is quite dark in comparison. Don't be afraid of using darker colours in sketching, in fact it is the contrast that assists in making the subject matter "pop out" or look 3D. In this picture, I simply color-picked a few areas so it's easier to compare

If you wish to reference accurately- a good tip to hold in mind is to draw only what you see, not what you want to see. Good luck, you're heading on the right track.

well rethinking the way you draw isn't a bad thing. good artists rethink their art all the time and reinvent themselves.

I was thinking it might be good just to show you what I was talking about. Now keep in mind I did this in a half an hour on printer paper with a #2 pencil.

now if any part of the picture is not stark white it has a shade of gray. her arms aren't white so don't shade them the same as the shirt. the shirt is very white so you don't have to shade as much but it you look close there are still shadows there.
some exsamples of other life drawings

example of a digital life drawing

Now all of these I sat down in front of a real person and drew them even the digital one.I came it with my computer and my tablet to a model class.

Now here is something else that is very impotent to note. Kai_Chi life drawing reflect how she approaches her art. She is very thoughtful and planning with her pencil strokes using blocks of shading and slowly building up her pictures.

I work a little different. I let my hand constantly move around the page and try to do the whole picture all the time. I also try not to erase unless it's to bring out hi-lights. my hand strokes are less controlled because I am having my hand expresses how my eyes are looking at the figure. I dart around to take in the detail.

both ways are good and these are just two ways to approach a drawing. This is just examples of two different styles.

we;; it's getting better but there is still something that is bothering me. why is her belly button showing and why are you trying to hide her hand? You made the girl bigger then what she really is. she is very pretty and not that big at all.

I'm not trying to draw the image exactly (as I previously mentioned in this thread). The sketch is for a character, and I deemed a few changes necessary. I didn't want her holding on to her shirt like she is in the photo, for instance, and the character I'm drawing is marginally heavier. This photo was the best reference I could find for someone similar. I'll probably do another sketch much more like this photo after I'm done with this one.

My drawing is only slightly bigger than the girl in the picture. Her upper body is the same and her lower body is only slightly wider in my sketch. The face in mine looks narrower than the original (even though it's the same width at the cheeks), which is probably why there's a mistaken impression that her body is bigger in mine.

Does anyone have specific comments about the shading?

wait so this is a character? I thought you where trying to do a drawing of the photo. my bad. sweatdrop

wait....if she is a character then don't you think she should cartoonafide((I know thats not a word)) a bit more? My animation teachers always tell me that if you have to explain your art to someone about a fact that should obvious then you did something wrong.

I think for your next one you should have a little more fun with it and making more of a cartoon because the way it's coming out now is that you are trying to do life drawing then as character.((I hope that makes sense))

No, I am deliberately using a realistic style. I don't care if someone can tell she's a character from this sketch, as it will be obvious in context.

Do you have any other comments/advice on the shading/posing?
