I want to change the art word into design. Whenever I hear or read the word art, I think of Dali, van Gogh, free arts, but not design. It's engrained from school.

the videogames themselves, the end product, no. I do view all the preliminary work that went into it, the creations of storyboards, characters, landscapes and such as it.

not very clear, but meh. ichi can yell at me. xD

interesting so your view on art is more of a 2D format then, everything thats done before embarking in the fabrication process... interesting never saw it like that : 3 I can understand why you would see it like that as well.

it's a product in my eyes. the same with an iPhone and such. All the preliminary work that went into it to create it, the designing, I can call that art/design. But when it's done, it's an object.

BUT, I don't work in the game industry. I do some DTP work for a company that renovates and builds buildings and highways. Whenever they discuss a road they made, what I would call a project, they call it an 'artwork'.
For me it's a road where I'm often stuck in a traffic jam, but they see it as art.

same with graphic design. Me and others from my field can discuss a poster design for hours, contemplating the positions of letters and what kind of letter, the use of some colours. while the people in the busstop only see the information on that same poster.

well thats true, but I guess for me art is an expression of sorts. If you can convaille an expression or feeling through your work then it could be considered as art. Something like a road won't provoke emotions from me so I wouldn't consider it art... but say the atmostphere that was set in a video game that lets me live an emotion or sensation I would still consider it art even if its a continuation of the preliminairy work. Because a lot happens in between the first concept art and the final product. If a game is able to keep that same feeling through out its design and not loose that, when they compleate the end result, I consider it a successfull piece of art.
