First level is always enjoyable. I'm doing 4d6, and if we aren't, I'll just re-roll.

Yeah, but I don't love my last roll. I don't have enough for my weapon and tools, let alone clothes. I'm making a Half-Elf Thief with the Swashbuckler kit - a professional gambler.

Ok, I don't know anything about how the rest of this works, but I know how to roll me some stats!

Again!
4, 5, 2, 5 = 14 6, 6, 6, 2 = 18 4, 5, 6, 6 = 17 1, 5, 3, 6 = 14 6, 2, 4, 1 = 12 2, 5, 3, 5 = 13
So...basically all good. Any ideas what I should make? I'd like something standard, but I don't even know what the core classes and races are.

Well, the races are the same.
The classes are about the same as 3.5. Tell me what type of character you want, we'll see what is closest to it. You know, do you want to be more of a fighter, or a dual wielder, or a thief, or mage or a cleric... cause there's a lot of different kits that can be taken or you can use a normal base version.

I do like some classes more than others, but there isn't a core class that I wouldn't want to play in 3/3.5. I'm willing to play anything, and if AD&D works in the "You need one of each of the four basic classes or you will not survive this dungeon" way, I'll take whatever fills the gaps.
I'll try to not be completely non-commital here. In 3rd, monks benefit from having 3 or more high stats a lot more than, say, a wizard. Is that the case in 2nd? I like monks. Alternately, a well-rounded wizarding type sounds fun, with a bit of practical magic, a bit of weapon capability, and a bit of blow-stuff-up. Third choice would be the good ol' sword-and-shield combo (or maybe axe-and-shield, as a dwarf?), nothing fancy.
We've got a thief already, what else are people playing?

No monks: Raganui Minamoto Restricted: Oriental Adventures - their martial arts are just plain rape in non-Oriental Adventures. But with those stats you can be just about anything.
