"The hunters got him," Matsuko whispered, having watched the scene unfold.
"I don't like them," Noko replied. "They smell like metal and blood."
"I know," Matsuko replied. "But we can't just leave him."
"Even though he's a cat?"
"I liked him. Come on, let's go see where they're going."
Matsuko climbed swiftly down, following the hunters like a ghost in the mist. At May's hut Matsuko's curiosity stopped her. A people alone in the forest? How odd!
"Hello," she called. Noko paused, wondering what could have distracted her from the cat.

::May stepped out from her hut and looked at the girl and wolf in front of her.::
"Is it friendly?" asked May.
"Oh course he wouldn't hurt a flea!" she smiled.
"Who are you?"
"I don't have time for intorductions now. Did you see hunters pass here with a cat as prisoner?" she asked.
"Yeah why?" asked May. May knew it was a hunters job to capture and sell demons to bidders. It was traditional. May had never seen anything wrong with it.
"We want to save him but Noko hates hunters. Will you help?" asked Matsuko.
"Sure." May smiled. Finally she had something to do besides dream of that fox.

::Rayden was dragged into town by the many hunters and the clanking of the chains against his fur made him itch. He hated this. He could see crowds of humans ahead. He was taken up to a stand and was forced inside a hut. The leader took him to a lower level in the house where he looked to him.
"Tell me your name." demanded the lead hunter putting a sword to his neck.
"Rayden." he declared calmly. If he was left alone in a downstairs enviroment he could easily escape but he was taken back to the stand where the hunters put him straight forward to the crowd.
"We have capture a cat demon who is male and is named Rayden. No family history. Could be either meat or a good pet for anyone interested. Bidding will start now."
::Rayden was blindfolded and his chains bugged him and that itch. But there was nothing he could do, not until it was too late anyway. He last thought was of that girl Matsuko. Maybe there was some good in humans after all.

Matsuko smiled widely. "We have to get to the gates quick. You can ride on Noko's back, since you are small. He runs fast!"
"Really?" May replied.
"Hurry!"
They raced to village gates where May went in alone to see if she could find Rayden. She ran back as quickly as she could. "They are selling him at an auction! Do you have any money?"
Matsuko shook her head. "What's that?"
May groaned and covered her face with her hand. "I never met a person who didn't know what money was before."
"I'm going to go find where he is going."

"Money is what you use when you want something like fruit." May took out a dollar and showed it to her.
"This is money, I don't have much but I can try. I think I have at least 100 dollars back at my hut. Do you think your wolf could take me?" asked May.
"I'll watch the bidding please hurry I don't want the hunters or someone worse to hurt him. He seems nice." Matsuko smiled.
::May quickly returned. And Matsuko looked at her disappointed.
"The bidding is up to 500 dollars!"

::Rayden stared at the crowd down in the 3rd row was a child of about seven.::
"Mommy, mommy I want the kitty." begged the little girl.
"Dear I don't have enough." the mother explained.
"But he's so pretty! I have to have him." demanded the little girl. Suddenly the person beside the girl spoke up.
"The only place this demon is going is to his death. I'll make sure of that."

"I want him!" Matsuko shouted, leaping atop a wagon.
"You?" the auctioneer said. "You have the money?"
Matsuko shook her head. "No. He is my friend."
"Then be quiet kid. This is for serious bidders only."

Matsuko pursed her lips and bent her knees. She leaped into the air, sailing over the heads of the crowd as she landed on the a uction block at Rayden's side.
"He is my friend," she insisted. "You can't sell him. He is already mine."

"Get her out of here!" demanded the boss. May stared in disbelief as Matsuko was taken off the stage and surrounded by guards.
"Now if there any more bids for the cat?" asked the autioneer.
"Yes I bid 1000 dollars smiled an old man from the back row.
"Holy cow, even I don't have that much." said the hunter next to the seven year old.
"Sold." smiled the autioneer. The old man led him off the stage and into a hut nearby. Rayden stared at the old man but suddenly he chains fell and he was free.
"We have to wait till midnight but when it comes return to your friends." smiled the old man.
"Who are you?" asked Rayden no humans had ever been kind to him before.
"I am a friend of the wolves. That is all you need to know. Tell Matsuko that I miss her." he smiled.
(I know I'm bad. But let's pretend she has a grandfather.)

Matsuko growled and the guards laughed.
"A little wolf, this one!"
They were not laughing a moment later.
Matsuko howled, once. All around the village howling began, until even the dogs in the street had stopped to howl. Matsuko looked down, her amber eyes eerie in the sunlight.
"Let me go," she said.
With the howls growing louder around them, the deepest superstitions of each of them were awakened and they backed away quickly, allowing Matsuko to walk freely away.
The howling stopped immediately and Matsuko grabbed May's hand, racing for the forest to wait in safety until dark.

"Thank you." bowed Rayden as midnight came and he entered the forest. They were waiting for him just as he had expected.
"You sure are trouble for a cat." smiled Matsuko.
"Hey you distracted me. Usually I never leave my mountain home. Who's your friend?" asked Rayden pointing to May.
"This is May and she helped me save you." smiled Matsuko.
::Rayden looked to her, another human. What was with all these humans? He was a demon why would a human save a demon. He only wished he knew the answer.::
"Thank you." bowed Rayden. Rayden looked to Matsuko.
"I'm supposed to deliver you a message from the man who saved me. He said he was a friend of the wolves and said he missed you." spoke Rayden.
"Someone knows me?" asked Matsuko.
"Yeah, don't know how though. He in that hut at the entrance to the village the one to the right. He is a very kind old man. Late sixtys I say. No clue where he got all his money though." answered Rayden.

"I don't know anyone in there," Matsuko replied. "Maybe he knows another Matsuko."
"We should go," May said nervously. "The hunters can come back any time, and I don't want to be anywhere near them."
"Neither does Noko," Matsuko said. "Let's go. Come on Rayden!"
They raced off into the trees, finding their way easily though it was dark. Matsuko helped May when she stumbled, and Rayden couldn't help but wonder how Matsuko, who was human, could see in the dark.

::They returned to May hut. Rayden looked to them both.:;
"I must leave now. I have to return to my mountain homes. It is too dangerous for me to be around here let alone around humans." spoke Rayden.
"Rayden can't you stay longer?" asked Matsuko.
"No, I'm sorry. The wolf is your friend. He can easily do anything I could do. It was nice knowing you." replied Rayden disappearing into the deeper part of the forest and into his mountain home.::
"He sure doesn't like us does he?" asked May.
"No, I think he likes us, but he's just afraid to admit it." smiled Matsuko.
"He's a demon why would a demon ever like a human?" asked May.
"When you grow up with them demons are used to you. I grew up with Noko here and he is my best friend." smiled Matsuko.
"It must be nice to have such a close bond with a demon. I'm afraid I'm quite scared of most demons but I don't mind Noko. He is very friendly." smiled May patting his head.::

Matsuko shook her head. "Noko isn't a demon. He is a wolf," she said. "He is just very big.
"But you talk to him!" May said, looking down. "And he talks back! I know he does."
"Don't all animals do that?" Matsuko asked, then shook her head. "Noko is a wolf. Kesasha(Kay-sah-sha) is a demon though. She is very gentle unless she is angry."
"What kind of demon is she?"
"A treecat, but she is not really a cat. Come, come! I will show you to her. She will like you, May."
They left the hut and started into the forest. Noko left them, heading off into the trees on his own.
"Wait! Isn't Noko coming?" May asked.
"No," Matsuko said. "Kesasha does not like him, and he has to go home anyway."
They came to a place where the trees were planted in a perfect circle, and Matsuko stopped. "We wait here. She will come to us."

::Rayden laid down on his bed made of cloth he had stolen from villagers who dared enter his mountain home.::
"Aw, at last I can relax and not worry about humans." smiled Rayden who was about to drift off to sleep when a male entered.
"Ah, shoot I forgot." Rayden slapped himself on the head and looked to Damien.
"Sorry I don't have your stuff for ya yet. I had some trouble with humans for a couple of days." replied Rayden.
"Humans, how interesting? And you didn't kill them?" asked Damien.
: biggrin amien was a huge mountain cat much more muscular than Rayden and wasn't afraid to kill any human he saw.::
"They had demons with them and you know me Damien. I don't hunt humans." answered Rayden.
"Aw, your no fun, wish I could've been here I would have enjoyed me a nice feast." smiled Damien.
"Damien listen I'll have your meat in a week okay. Now stop pestering me I'm tired grumpy and I need some sleep."
: biggrin amien came and sat down by Rayden.::
"Now is that any way to treat your best friend?" asked Damien.
"Leave me alone Damien I'm not in the mood." replied Rayden.
"But I have a surprise for you. Come on in guys." smiled Damien. Two mountains cats entered with a girl in between them chained by her neck, hands and feet. She was wearing clothes that looked similar to Matsuko's. A dress.
"Who is that and why is she here?" asked Rayden noticing the cat ears and the tail.
"This is your mate. After all Rayden we worked so hard to steal her from the hunters." smiled Damien.
"Let her go. She should be free to chose her mate and I'm not interested anyway." answered Rayden.
"Well if you don't want her, I'll be glad to have her." smiled Damien giving him the look of trust me you don't want that.
"All right but leave her and me alone." answered Rayden. The cat girl was tossed to the ground and Damien left with his other cats.
"Don't forget next week." smirked Damien.
::The girl looked up to Rayden scared and confused.::
"Who are you?" she asked.
