I got into a fight with someone at PMX about this.

I have seriously never, NEVER EVER, heard ANYONE make fun of a girl wearing a well-made, proper handsewn dress. Seriously, it is major props for girls with that sort of skill. Maybe this is just me, maybe I've never heard of it before; maybe it has happened, somewhere, sometime ONCE.

So a girl was looked down because her dress was not a brand? Or what the fight about something else?

Basically she was just yelled at for making her clothes period. Despite how beautiful they were she was chewed out for not buying them from a store which is so silly I still can't get over it.

How rude! I would stood up for that girl! That's no excuse to be mean! She must have worked really hard to make it!

She did work extremely hard (she said it took her a few months to get it perfect) and yes, most people there were offended and were like hey, what the hell? but really it was like being in a state of shock. It was just sooo uncalled for.

Just out of curiosity... what's an Elitist? I heard stories but I'm afraid I don't understand

Basically, an elitist is a person who believes him-or-herself
to be above and better than others, for fickle reasons such as
the cliques of friends they have, clothes they wear, or any other such status.

Being/behaving elitist is never, under any circumstances, a good thing.
This is not to say that it is wrong to have those friends / wear those clothes,
but to flaunt that status and berate others only for being different
is completely bogus and just stupid and wrong.

It doesn't make anyone go "Oh man, that person is so cool."
It just makes everyone go, "What a jerk."

That's an elitist.

Actually in this fashion the term elitist is used in a different manner Magical Girl. In the Lolita Fashion the term "elitist" is most commonly used when a person is said to disregard other's opinions because the clothing they wear is only brand clothing. Since they will only wear what they feel is "real" lolita clothing they will talk down to others who do not wear it and even if it a new comer to the fashion they will degrade their choice of clothing. While Elitism is said to be very common it is actually not and it just a term dropped into every conversation now so that people who get bad advice or criticism will use it as an excuse. I really don't even see much on the LJ EGL Community where it was a breeding ground for it before. Basically now it's just a term overused by new comers to the fashion

Well brand clothing is nice. But I don't want to talk down other people because they don't wear brand. I really like Angelic Pretty but some handmade styles are nice too. I guess it gives me a satisfaction knowing that I made it....

Things that bother me:

Being told that my heels are slutty! Sorry, but I'm American, and my lolita fashion is heavily influenced my American fashion and vice versa. I just don't feel my age in rockinghorse shoes. I choose to dress the way I like and feel most comfortable. And that means this -> http://cdn1.ioffer.com/img/item/396/577/66/kiss-280.jpg and not this and not this -> http://i23.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/c2/33/a3bb_3.JPG Then again, I usually stick to classic and ero lolita, and that first link is certainly not ero lolita.

The worst part is... *drumrole* it's NOT true lolita who say this! They recognize my personal style and see that I'm still modestly keeping to the general lolita form. It's other girls wearing cosplay ,short skirts, visible thighs and cleavage who say this! Italolis!

Also, being petted/picked up or people screaming kawaii. This only happens in sweet loli though, and it doesn't really bother me that much...

Oh, those first shoes are gorgeous!!
See, I can see those going with anything.
I'd want them in a million colors!

But knowing me, I'd probably trip and fall
if I wore heels/platforms that high.
n_n;

But yeah, same here,
I go outside of the loli norm with my shoes.
I have flats and wedges and heels that all really match my clothes.
I even attach clip-on bows to my shoes to make them match even more!
I'd be annoyed if someone pointed them out and called them "wrong"
just because they're "against the rules." Pffft.

I commend you for wearing those shoes; they look hard to walk in, but they're totally cute.
I tend to be one of those lolis who says, "Screw the rules, I have fashion sense of my own, and I'm gonna use it!" I try to stick to the basics, but I believe that some stuff is up for personal interpretation.

I also really admire people who sew their own lolita items.

What bothers me:

MEAN LOLITAS. (It really did need to be in all caps...) This past Nekocon, my friend who does EGL, Kurololi, and Gothloli asked a couple Sweet Lolitas for their picture. They were quite rude to her. I don't know how their day had been or anything, and my friend was being very polite. It's just sad. My friend and I were talking afterword about how sweet lolitas tend to be snobby. I don't really think that this is true; I think it's a bad stereotype from negative experiences. I'm usually nice, when I'm in lolita (Except for the one time that someone asked me if I was one of the three blind mice in lolita...I carry a cane, because I really don't see much at all, not for cosplay fun. But even then I tried to politely explain that I NEEDED the cane...). Remember, ladies one of us being rude makes all of us look bad, and it's unladylike.

I am not fond of those fashions that wear crinoline on the outside of clothes...I think of it like wearing underwear on the outside...(For decora (sp?) I think it's more acceptable.)

I also think that bought-it-all-at-Hot-Topic outfits are not lolita. It's mainly because of the short skirts...I'm not as upset about these last two as I am about Mean Lolitas.

Holy crap, that actually happened?!

What a horrible thing to say!
That was just completely thoughtless of them!!

But at the same time, I can't imagine how mortified they must have felt
when they realized it wasn't a costume at all...

Reminds me Prez. Bush attempting humorous conversation
by joking that it was cloudy out, so you shouldn't need sunglasses...
not realizing that the gentleman he was speaking to was blind.

Yeah, it happens a lot to me at cons. Canes are issued by the state, but people seem to think that it's a prop... I don't think that they felt too bad about it...

The next day, a guy who had seen me somewhere without my cane walked up to me and informed me that I was not blind. I was so angry. I just walked away.

Your Prez. Bush story made me laugh. Thanks heart

I have a friend who is legally blind also....and if someone had the nerve to tell her she isn't blind because she doesn't have her cane stressed ....I would have punched the STUPID out of him.... scream
I'm so sorry that has happened to you.

I agree, right on his idiotic head to see if some sense gets knocked into him

Aww, that is terrible.. I can't see why anyone would say that. I would never think "three blind mice" if I saw someone with a cane, dur..

I hate people who ask if what you're wearing is a costume, or what your friend is wearing, then insist it is 8D

I also hate the awkward silences I get from people who look at my dress sketches and I have to explain what lolita is..

I just bought more fabric for dresses yesterday...
I work at the store, so the person cutting everything for me was a friend of mine,
so naturally she was curious about what I was making.

I get soooo irrationally embarrassed about my lolita lifestyle.
I know I shouldn't, but I'm so much of a wimp.

There were some other conversationable ladies in line waiting,
and they were quite friendly and were interested in what all that
fabric was for, too.

I told them I make stuffed animals and themed costumes...
Well, the stuffed animal thing is true, and my dresses do have themes,
but the moment the word "costume" came out of my mouth,
I FELT SO GUILTY!

I felt like I'd abandoned everything that lolita stands for.
