Excelent. Also, here are the extra examples I promised. (where'd the week go?)



In the spirit of my drawing teacher's forcing me to draw myself, I used myself as an example. It's mangafied, but it still has all of my bone structure. My face is not shaped like a baseball diamond. That comes from "stylization" overkill.

You can sharpen peoples' features too. I drew myself, compared to a hypothetical older white guy. The bridge of his nose is drawn completely, and he has a sloped straight forhead, whereas my face is barely angled at all and my nose is teeny tiny. I also have a craptastic comparison of low v. high cheek bones. I just drew this so ya'll would have something to keep in mind as you drew, don't loose too much sleep over it, I'll go into excruciating detail later.

I don't want to get redundant about torsos, but the male v. female shows how a male's torso is proportionately bigger. The smaller sketch on the bottom shows it better. And just for visualization I shows a decent comparison I learned about in a How to Draw Manga book. Please note this only works for people of roughly the same size. Don't draw skinny emos with torsos larger than a fat womans. Alright, I'll leave you guys alone for now.

2a: The heads pretty good so I'll go on to the neck down. Good job paying attention to the neck details but you could have made it alittle wider. You don't necessarily have to draw a big pitbull neck (unless the person really is just that stocky) just bigger than that. The right side of his neck should come to the midline of his face. Necks are bigger than it seems like they should be. For now to train your self to quit drawing flimsy necks is to draw them bigger than you think they should be. Also, the muscles (who's name I forgot) that makes the lines on the neck. They start at were the ear meets the jaw and create a deep "V" rather than being as vertical as you made them.

The shoulders are a good width, the wider neck would make it look more in proportion. You drew the shoulders waaay boxy, being nearly horizontal. The collar bone is more of a "v" than what you drew and the deltoids aren't quite that round. The torso it fine, you could have made it shorter though. The legs theoretically, are a good length. From the top of the femur to the soles of the feet are the same length as the head to the top of the femur. The legs are very long, but that will take care of it's self when you draw the torso short enough. The muscle-structure looks more convincing over all than last time, and it'll get better with lots of practice.

2b: Alright, not bad. The glaring problem is that his eyes are too big. Just like necks are bigger than it seems, eyes are not as big as you think they'd be. They're too wide and alot of the eye size you perceive is also eyelids (which are missing in your drawing). The thing about portraits is that you have to pay attention to minute little details because they make a big difference. Like in my manga me, if I'd drawn it too angular or changed the shape of the eyelids or lips, it wouldn't look like me at all. The sides of his nose are not as vertical as you drew, they go a little like this - /. And the tip of his nose isn't quite as low. The distance from his hairline to the bottom of his nose is the same as from his brow to his chin. Also, the neck length is awsome and doesn't look flimsy at all.

Your assignments are to draw a posemaniacs pose. It can be whatever you want, the same one or a different one. Again, keep it relatively simple. And draw the same guy again. Pay more attention to proportions little details that make him look like himself.

3a- Thank your for widening the neck, it looks alot more convincing. The deltoids are looking better. Great job on keeping the 3/4 view of the deltoids and from what I can see the deltoids. But if your going to twist the body like that you should keep it up the whole way down. The lower torso and the crotch are from the front but the knees and feet indicate he's supposed to be turned in a 3/4 again. His crotch is also short O.o , when your drawing guys, make sure there's enough room for their privates. Also, his legs are too long this time in proportion to his body. from the top of the femur to the sole of the feet is about the length as from the top of the femur up.

On to the poses, the placement of the arms is a little awkward to, it would look more stable if you connected the left arm to the right hand so it would look like he's resting his hand on his arm. It looks like that's what your going for but it doesn't look natural and comfortable.

3b- Much, MUCH, better. See how much more human he looks when you give him eye lids? There's a few minor things, like the sides of his hair line, and angles of lines that could be perfected, but yeah, moving on, the next assignment is to draw a posemaniacs. Now that I know you have problems with 3/4's the pose has to be a 3/4 twisted . For the drawing real people, you can perfect this one more, or draw another person, real or a picture..

Alright, here's one of the assignments. :3 The pose one might be a little late, on Sunday instead of Saturday, but until then...

set0free: Oh know how in anime they draw peoples' noses looking like wedgs with one side missing? That's because noses are shados, and when you drawing you don't have to draw every single line. What I'm getting at is that the contour for the nose on the left side either could have been omitted OR drawn a lighter value to show that the nose protrudes on the right side, because it's 3/4 view.

The drawing also looks flat, because there's no line weight changes or indications that some parts are in more shadow than others. Every thing looks like it's on the exact same plane because there's just no percievable difference. I get the feeling that your concentrating on the lines to draw without keeping in mind that your reproducing a 3 dimensional thing. So to beat the 2D thinking out of you, I'm going to ask you to draw a portrait of a person, FROM LIFE, using values. But I'm not expecting that kind of detail and expertise, just so you get instilled with a 3D-drawing mindset.
