The problem with a rogue going into melee is the whole lack of any good armor, and/or the need for high Dexterity. As for a weapon, and stacking it onto Weapon Focus, I'd go Rapier. That way at 3rd level he can chose Weapon Finesse, then at 6th level, Weapon Focus. Damage won't be that great, but he will depend on sneaking around, and Backstabbing, literally, for as much damage as possible. Sure he won't be dishing out constantly high damage, like a Fighter, nor will he be completely safe in battle. But that's what he's sacrificing.
Personally, I would've suggested going Crossbow (repeating if possible) for the main weapon, then some kind of melee for a back-up should he need it.

Xenar1 just joined the guild smile never played D&D and don't have any books (am reading an online scoure material on 3.5 that I found here.) so my question is this; any good template that a DM and myself or others can quickly read and understand?
If you're playing in person, the book has a copy of the character sheet in the very very back. You can also likely find it by google image searching the edition and "character sheet". If you can print it, way to go! Online, there's websites like Myth Weavers, The Tangled Web, Coyote Code, and probably more that I haven't seen. You have to sign up to the website but that's all they ask of you.
When I play, I usually hand-write my sheet because I prefer my own format. But for people new to the game, I suggest using a standard template. It's less of a matter of YOU using a template format that's easy to read. It's more of EVERYONE using the same template format that's easy to read. Consistency is key. If the DM wants to see what your skill bonus for, say, Knowledge: History is without outright asking you, he or she should be able to find it on the same spot on everyone's sheet.
