soad26 hey i'm starting band this up coming year in high school so i'm wondering what type of instrument to play the one thing I need from the instrument i choose is it has to be small enough to take back and forth with me and the bus so if any on has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated thx id say clarinet cuz it light and easy 2 play, u could also play drums tho. like u dont have to bring ur drums, just ur practicing drum pad and ur drum sticks. everyone i no does tht.

Clarinet is the easyest to march with. Flute requires a lot of crazy posture. If you have problams with hand coordination, then I suggest trumpet or baritone. they both have fairly easy fingering, but I think you have to base a lot of your playing on embichure. I do not suggest you play sax or drumbs because everyone in your grade is probably going to play that, but if it looks like there aren't that many, go for it! Just listen to differant instruments and pick one based on if you like there sound. Look for solos on youtube or something. 3nodding

Piccolo, Flute, or Clarinet.
I play the clarinet and its suprisingly light.
I've had to carry a flute and it just feels like ur holding a shoe
But a Piccolo feels like ur holding a glasses case, and its like as big as 1. Unless u dont mind holding a Flute or Piccolo in a very crazy way i suggest the clarinet. Its small, easy, and to the point. ^-^

Woodwinds only squeek when they are played by noobs.
Screw the Piccolo. If you join marching band, it is never in tune in the weather.
Flutes are easy, they are portable, and play beautifully. And...they don't squeek.
Clarinets look easy. They are also portable and are really interesting when they are playing mysterious, or scary parts in low notes.
Trumpets look easy because they only have three valves.
If you are a beginner, don't listen to what us band nerds have to say. Choose an instrument that intrigues you. If you don't like one, try another. That's the beauty of learnign an instrument. You can choose one, or many. And if you don't like one, move on to another. That, is what I would do, and did. I've been playing the flute for five years now, and love it.

Since you're looking for a light instrument, you should choose one of these: Flute, piccolo, clarinet, any saxophone, trumpet, or oboe.
Ignore the people who are saying clarinet is easy. I play it, and it was hard as hell to learn to play it well. You don't have to blow too hard, though. It's a really cool instrument, though.
Flute was extremely easy for me to learn, but that was probably because I already played clarinet. But it's really not that hard to get used to holding it sideways and the fingerings are very simple.
I don't know very much about any of the instruments, though. Sorry.
