As for the tape issue-
If it comes unstuck during practice ON THE FIELD at practice, reuse the tape if at all possible. Do not run inside to get more.
But when you get home/inside, retape it. And retape it NEATLY. I taped the bottom of my flag really tightly over the summer at BC, and I only now need to retape it. I don't think I have changed the top tapes in.... 6 months? And they look fine.

If you do a crap job of retaping, though, it WILL BREAK at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME. I promise.

Other than that....
Meh, I'll come up with something later. I have a paper to write.

If your flag gets a sail, make sure you fix it as soon as possible.
Put your thumb on your flag during drop-spins to keep it from rolling.
JAZZ RUN if you have to, never girly run.

If you want to stay alive pay speacial attention to this, "I DON'T GIVE A s**t HOW BAD YOUR DAY, WEEK, OR MONTH WAS: DON"T BE A b***h", don't tell people what to do unless they ask, or not practice.

There are a couple girls in my guard that aren't first years and can't grap these subjects.

Here are a few things I picked up in my years...
-Tape is your friend. The more you use, the better, and if you make sure the tape on the top stopper isn't scuffed up or shredded then the chances of you catching a sail are less.

-If you're like me and you have freakishly long nails, cut them. My problem was that they also grew back really fast so I had to live with the pain, but you don't.

-Wear sunglasses, even when it isn't that bright out. Too many times was I whipped by the corner of the silk (9/10 it was the lamé) in my eyes. I eventually had to get glasses >and I DO blame the silks for that<.

-Even if you aren't menstruating, bring a ton of back up. You make more friends that way...

-And finally...
one more time, my @$$. They said that 4 hours ago.

On a side note, the corn shows experience. Be proud! ((Examine the palm of your right hand, just below the pinky finger. ))

Eloquently
Buy your own guard tape instead of mooching off the older girls, and use too much as opposed to too little. If the tape comes off, use new tape! Don't try to make the old tape try to stick because it will just come off again.

Don't take other people's equipment.

Check your own chart before you accuse someone else of being in the wrong place. (this would be during practice of course)

And if you know you're in the right spot/doing the right thing, stand up for yourself. Nothing worse than a girl who thinks she knows everything making other people do the wrong thing because they listen to her when they should know better.

i so agree

omg my biggest pet peeve is this: a lack of smiling. unless you are playing an instrument or u are on staage and you r character requires it, YOU ARE PERFORMING AND YOU NEED TO SMILE!!!!
it just looks better and people are more likely to pay attention if it looks like we are enjoying what we do...
a quote from our choir directer
" if this is a good place to be, let your face know and smile!"
thats the gist of it any ways.

as for the tape issue i stand on middle ground...
if you have to reuse it do so but make it tight and neat,
then change it asap. it wont hold long

take care of your equipment (specialy lame) its too exxpensive to replace alll that often.

lock it up!!!! we have certain band members whom like to mess with our equipment and thats how it gets lost!!!!

if you are ging to use gloves, practice in them..

when you get hurt dont do much to acknowledge it, it just annoys those who are not new to it. cuss and swear for a couple seconds then get over it, other wise the more experinced member s could very likely get upset with you..

pay attention when your coaches are speaking to you other wise they get mad..its not nice to have your coaches mad at you, they make your life a living hell...

younger girls- if coach puts some one in charge of you, listen to them. things go smoother, unless she s being a b****, then talk to your coach, also if anouther girl gives you a tip, try it out if it doesnt work you can allway s revert back later..if it doesthank the other girl for their help, we like to be appreciated..

and finally
IF YOU CANT TAKE THE PAIN GET OFF THE FEILD!!!!!!!!

To every senior that has a junior captain: They are not your captain just to spite you. They may be younger than you, but chances are they have more leadership qualities. Suck it up.

pay attention 2 small details
pay attention 2 ur free hand CONSTANTLY
b respctful 2 ur captain, she wants 2 help u, not put u down, or get u yelld at later.
count LOUD
if ur more experienced, help the new girls stay n step by saying left instead of counting

DONT let other guard members use your equipment-especially rifle
true story-Exene and i were practicing last period the day of our Christmas Concert and she forgot her rifle at home so since we were both the only two on the front line we had a higher toss and she needed practice. my strap was too loose for her so she tightened it and snapped it. i had to switch the strap and use the new one for the performance.

Hey random question but do your guard girls date only percussion if they are dating other band members? cuz we have 4 guard/percussion couples-me included but its still strange cuz lots of guards and percussion dont get along

be careful when stripping your flag, if its the right fabric you might cut your self or tear the flag beyond repair

If the screws on your rifle become stripped (which mine always do...) There is no need to by a new rifle. You take a strip of tape and wrap it around were the screw used to be and it works just as well. Though wrap it at least three times or it will break the first time you throw it.

Always make sure to have a mirror... applying make up on the bus is difficult enuff w/ a mirror don't make it harder than it has to be.

Hairspray. You can never have too much. You are performing outside the weather will mess up your hair, without fail unless you have turned your head into an iron helmet w/ the hairspray. (true story for our guard. we had a competition and of course it rained. well our hair do was this weird poof thing in the front and then a spiked bun in the back.. well the girls who hair was barely sprayed had to redo their hair... but mine and those who but on tons of spray hair didn't move. a bit. I swear the water just bounce off of it.)

Your makeup is too light if it looks like everyday makeup, no one in the stands will see it, put it on at least twice as heavy as you normally would.

If the wind is blowing directly back at you in at at least ten mph hour. DO NOT THROW! However if your director tells you to throw anyway... don't even bother trying to catch just duck. You will get hit if you don't. (this happened to us... it was ridiculious you would push your flag forward with all your might it would go straight forward and then come right back at you and soar past you at least ten more feet.

If the stopper on your flag is not secured with tape, it will fly and probably hit a band member. So tape them properly...

If you are on a side of the field with out a leader and the director/tech appoints someone to lead the block even if they are younger than you, LISTEN TO THEM DO NOT START TELLING THEM WHAT TO DO THEY ARE IN CHARGE NOT YOU! this always happens to me i'm in the front and one of the older girls in my guard starts telling me that the work is wrong when i've asked every one((including the director)) and they were the one's at fault

tape your swivels before the wood splits or the screw is loose it's just easier!

strapping tape can be your best friend along with electrical, use it as a first layer on your rifle it will help you so much, less sawdust is formed.

when taping your flag tape your stopper in a star until it's completely covered, then tape it to the pole ((star)) lastly tape up the pole.

always trust your directors even if they are not for your section they know that flags rifles and sabers are to go up and down together.

Perform, perform, perform!! Always have good posture and smile. Smiling is good because it makes you look like you're confident and having fun, and keeps you from making any "oh crap" faces when you mess up/drop/hit yourself.

Never be afraid to ask questions. Don't think it makes you look stupid. It's better to clarify something in practice than screw it up during a performance. I was always so worried about looking stupid freshman year that I never asked any of my questions, but it ended up making me look worse. Just make sure you ask at an appropriate time.
