Favorite Book / Series: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevesky

Favorite Author: Laurell K. Hamilton (but only for the moment).

Favorite Genre(s): Classics, Fantasy, Historical (Greek city state

era), Vampire Romance.

Currently Reading: The Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri.

Thoughts: This is one of the best collections of short stories I've

read so far, aside from James Joyce's The Dubliners and Suzanna

Clark's The Ladies of Grace Adieu. The first story, 'A Temporary

Matter' is so beautifully written and gracefully sad. It made me want to

grab the first person I saw and shove the book in the face and

scream "READ IT, READ IT NOW!!!". Lahiri is a gorgeous writer and her

style is exquisitely sensitive to character depth and emotion, which is

amazing because this was her first novel! I can't say enough how much I

love this book.

Favorite Book/Series: You mean I have to pick just ONE? Sheesh! Well...two. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, and Lord of the Rings.
Favorite Authors: Helen MacInnes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Clive Cussler, Agatha Christie, Donald Westlake (his more lighthearted stuff, like The Spy in the Ointment and Castle in the Air), Victoria Holt
Favorite genres: Mysteries (anything from cozies to gritty police procedurals--basically, I like just about any mystery as long as it's not one of those scary serial-killer stories. There's enough horror in the real world; I don't want my PLEASURE READING to give me nightmares!), classics, spy thrillers, adventures, gothic romances (a la Victoria Holt or Phyllis A. Whitney)
Currently reading: Fudge Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke
Thoughts: This summer I've been on a cozy-mystery kick, so I started reading Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen mysteries. I'm starting to want to get back into spy thrillers or gothic romances, though. One thing I don't really read in my spare time is nonfiction. I'm a graduate history student, and I'm one of the few I know in my classes who actually admits to reading paperback novels. Most of my classmates at least claim to read history books for pleasure. I don't begrudge my classmates the enjoyment they get from reading history. I just can't figure out how they do it! For me, history is a nine-to-five job, and on my own time I read fast-paced fiction. I guess I just feel like the class weirdo when my pleasure reading is so different from everyone else's. Maybe they secretly read trashy stuff when no one's looking. I don't know. But...yeah. I love to read, but not the things my professors wish I loved to read! razz

Oh, and after being so long-winded, I forgot to mention that I eventually want to get around to reading Twilight. The story sounds interesting, and I must admit that the love-it-or-hate-it reaction it has received really makes me curious.

Favorite Book / Series: The Lord of the Rings
Favorite Author: G.K. Chesterton
Favorite Genre(s): Fantasy, Classics, Theology
Currently Reading: The Anathemata
Thoughts: It's really brilliant, but I would suggest a good knowledge of Catholicism, Arthurian literature, and classical history before opening it.
