@Mallow: Cool, a fellow Okie xd Good luck on the driver's test, whenever you take it!
I yearn for the day when those fat oil companies let the alternatives shine. As unlikely as that is. To me, it almost sounds like a wonderful investment to buy one of those home biodiesel refiners. I'd love to get one and replace the gas engine in my little '00 Frontier with a diesel engine. Wishful thinking, though. x3

Some oil companies are "attempting" to let alternative fuels shine. Ethanol is not a viable answer, we don't need to grow fuel when the world is in the middle of a freaking food shortage. I put the blame on the car companies and the government. Automobile makers can force the hand of oil companies by refusing to make new cars that use gas. General Motors has already created a very nice electric car, there was a documentary about it Who killed the electric car wiki. It was pulled off the market because of the "poor sales," and other reasons... the car wasn't sold outside of Arizona and Southern Cali.
I also blame the government for not forcing stricter rules on oil profits. The bush administration has been the worst in the way of capital gains for the individuals in their offices. d**k Cheney has reportedly made between 20 and 80 million dollars this past year. I'm guessing it's closer to the end digits, and because he's profiting off the high prices of oil and kick backs from giving Halliburton government contracts in Afghanistan and Iraq. d**k Cheney: oil baron and war profiteer.

Gas in Buffalo, NY: between $3.98 and $4.15. I'm not sure what it is on the reservation right now (I won't be back that way for a while), but it's probably in the $3.80s.
I think ethanol from corn is a bad idea, but if we used other fast-growing plants for biofuel it would work, like willow or switchgrass (I learned that from the Envirothon in 2002 heh)... we need corn for food, and trying to use it for fuel too is dumb. then a gain, i think that we use corn way too much as it is. it's in everyyyyything.

My Ecology professor last year said something in passing about why corn based fuel is a bad idea. I can't remember everything that he said, but I do remember the point about food prices. It was something about how more farmers would plant corn instead of other vegetables for consumption, thus raising the regular vegetable prices. I think that he said something about the effect on the environment also. We were actually on a class field trip at the time and we drove past a corn field, so it was brought up.
About electric cars, I heard that the reason that they didn't work was because of having to be charged. I heard something about there not being enough places to charge the cars. But if you think about it, the electric industry in general is not good for the environment.
Walking is a good idea. Think about the weight problem in the US. We get in our cars and drive everywhere. When we aren't in cars, we are usually sitting at desks or on couches or something. Walking and biking would be better for us. It is too bad that it would take me all day to walk anywhere due to how far apart everything is spaced. Malomy walks three miles to work every day and then she walks back another three miles. The girl has killer legs. lol

Maybe I'll just move to a town when I'm older where everywhere you go you can bike or walk. I do like biking. I just wish I had a decent basket on it, or something to tie down my things.

I used to have a nice bicycle... It was bluish green and black. Then, without realizing it... my dad gave it to the Goodwill when I was away at college! crying He has a thing about "clutter." xp

People can charge their cars at home, for bout $8. Environmentally they could get that electricity from any source... If a home has solar panels then the fuel and the home are running free.

The problem with solar panels is that you need sunlight. There are many areas that are cloudy most of the winter. sad I am just curious to see how all of these problems can be solved in the future.

Seattle is notoriously rainy, and all the people that I know in that region have solar panels and they still have excess energy. The sun isn't the only source of green energy. We can use tidal energy, wind energy, and even the methane gas that our trash produces.

I have heard that some people use french fry grease and stuff like that to fuel diesel cars. School systems could pay off the awful gas bills just by saving the grease from the cafeterias! blaugh

I don't know if we could get off of gas right now, but I know that we should at least try to get some sort of half-and-half system. Gasoline and electricity or gasoline and solar power or SOMETHING.
And I think gas in central Oklahoma is around $3.60 per gallon or so as of now.

That is pretty good compared to the rest of the country. I just realized something today. It takes more money to drive to the dollar theater than it would to treat a car full of my friends to a movie. xp

Problem with methane is it's rather unstable, otherwise it'd make a great energy source. 3nodding

I'm sorry. I have to say it. The "gas" fueled car will be fueled by a stinkier form of "gas" if that is the case... blaugh *imagines farting into the fuel tank* rofl
