well, it really depends on the band. my band doesn't treat us like we're a part of them. most of the time they don't even treat us like we're HUMAN! freshman year, i loved the band and knew everyone, but that's because my best friend at the time was the most popular incoming freshman and i knew him before he became "famous". but i fear i will rant too much. . .

Lori2345 demonic_bunny825 I am so SICK OF THIS! YES the guard is part of the band! We may not play an instrument, but we put in the same amount of time [actually just a tad more], we work just as hard, we have the same rules, we get punished with the band, w are part of the band! Our guard is frequently pushed aside and I'm sick of it. We're not even a sucky guard! 19.5 in the rainsnowwindtwentysome degrees and whatnot does not constitute suckage! We are equal parts of the big picture, we deserve to be treated as such. i hear yah!! thats right garud does alot for a band and all garuds deserve to be treated with respect. without us a band would have no visual aid and only the judges would watch the band the auidence would just sit there and listen to the music. so we all need to berespected or we can use our flags as weapons. please learn to spell "guard" first.

Our band didn't treat the colorguard like they were part of a band. But by the time I came in, they were finally starting to learn. I think a large part of the problem is the fact that the guard and the band gets separated so often in practices. Our director tried to fix that by making sure that whenever the whole band was doing something, the guard was invited too. It helped a lot. Not only that but the guard earned a lot of respect last season because we won 1st place in the Colorguard category in almost every single show, even if the rest of the band didn't do that well. I had it a little easier than the rest of the guard, and still do because I had friends already in band before I joined the guard, and I made more by volunteering to hold music books during football games. The only thing that needs to happen if a guard isn't being accepted is for the director to step in and for the guard to not give up and fight to put themselves in. Make friends. And to any band who thinks they can do better without a guard, I say b.s. There is a specific category called GE, at least in my circuit. And that would go way down if there was no guard. Colorguard are the crayons, the football field is the paper, and the marching band are the lines of the coloring book. As pretty as the picture might be, it's just not complete without color. Oops, ranting...sorry.

"Band without colorguard is like oreos without milk... Just not as satisfying."
I heard that quote somewhere. I think my flute buddy sent me it. I think the guard's part of the band at my school. In fact, next year, we'll have to take marching band as a half-year course if we want to be in colorguard, so we'll be more part of the band next school year than ever before.

It depends on the guard.
TECHNICALLY, a guard should not only be a part of the band but a more respected part. My guard performs with the band as well as separate (and most of us in the winter percussion show) and we put the visuals to the music that the band plays. thats our entire purpose. how can we not be part of the band if we work with them?

our guard is usuaaly part of the band. our director is one of the band directors, we dont have someone separate for guard (i dont know if anyone else does). we sometimes go off and do our own thing, but other than that we're part of the band.
which is fine, all my friends are band nerds! <3

technecally yes, especially in marching season, but in winterguard i think were ingnored a little, since u have a *band director* (well i do anyway) that takes u everywhere with the percussion group when we perform at the same place.

People listen to the band but watch the guard. We're kinda like the black sheep of the marching band. The band hates it if we accidentally bring the overall score down, but then they hate us if we do better than them. *sigh* I agree with the separate but together sentiments.

The guard at our school works just as hard, if not harder, than the band does. They add something to a show that can't be added from an instrument player and should be respected for that.

K, at my school, the guard is part of the band. We put in more hours than anyone else in the band, we work hard than the rest of the band, but we go where ever they go, we have the same class period, We are just as much apart of the band as everyone else. So, The guard is most deffinatly (sp) a part of the band and no matter what anyone else says.
