I've been to the ER more times than I can remember for various issues, I've been there from anywhere from 30 minutes to at least 7 hours.
It just depends. Someone having a serious emergency will always get treated before someone with a more minor problem. Also, most ERs are understaffed and sometimes there are other issues that might delay you...

After yesterday I've only been to the ER twice for myself.
Last night was because I was having pain in my ribs that hadn't gone away in two days. Aslo my ribs aren't even and my sternum pops all the time. Due to the fact that I've had heart issues in the past I decided I wasn't going to play around with it and have it looked at. Four hours later I still hadn't seen anyone and they were so full that it would have been at least another few hours I decided to leave and if it was still bothering me today I would go back. I woke up this morning and my rib is tender but not painful. *Yes, I will be going to get it check out either way but I'm going to wait until I get paid have have health inssurance*
I can't afford to be another $90 medical vist just for a consult again. That was only half of what I could have been charged.
AS for the first time my feet graced the ER it was for a much for frightening reason. I was 14 suffering from a dizziness and a rapid heart rate. We walk into the ER the nurse takes my vitals and the next thing I know I'm been shoved into a bed. The shock on that poor nurses face was more scary than anything I've seen. I was fast enough to see why he was worried. He had placed the heart rate monitor on my finger and the machine screamed. HR of 226... By the time he got me to the bed and had be strapped into a cardiac event monitor my HR had dropped to about 86.
After some tests and such we found out that I had WPW (Wolff-Parkinsons-White).

Raien3 had it mostly right.
Triage is the primary thing (no I'm not talking about the section of the hospital). They look at the needs of the patients. Someone having a heart attack will be admitted before someone complaing of stomach pain. Its a matter of necessity. The other limiting factor is space and manning. That really limits the hospitals capabilities. Yes, they do want to diagnose the problem right, so that takes some time. Forms do have an effect, but those are the primary reasons.
The last time I was there, I had gone to my buddies ship's homecoming. Split my head open on the ship somewhere. I waited a little while at the ER, they had even asked me if I minded someone in a little worse predicament to be admitted first. 9 stitches later and I was sent back to the ship to have a watch posted on me for a concusion and plenty of good meds.

Thankfully I haven't had any recent reasons to wind up in the hospital, and when I was younger I only ended up in there twice.
The first time when I was about five or six for doing something stupid and cutting my foot open. I don't remember for how long we were there, but I do recall rather vividly having to be strapped down to a board thing so they could stitch my foot up and screaming the whole time.
The second time when I was in the third grade I got a really, really bad case of poison ivy. They had been building a new middle school up on the hill above our elementary school and they were burning plant waste as our class was outside playing. I remember being sent home early that day because about an hour after we can in I was breaking out in a horrible rash. The next day my father had to take me to the hospital because I was so affected I couldn't open my eyes and was just so covered in rash he was terrified.
As I said, thankfully since those two incidents I haven't had any cause to wind up in a hospital ER.

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight... It looks like I'm the only one, but I love hospitals. Ever since I was a kid I've loved hospital cafeterias and hospital gift shops, and because of my love for the environment I wanted to work in a hospital. My first job was as a medical office assistant in a hospital and then I later became an EMT and visited the ER eight times a day on average. ...and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

Once when I was very young I was helping my mother make a cake for one of my siblings birthday... I was standing on the counter and I tried to close the cupboard door. I leaned back too far and fell off of the counter.
Our kitchen has a half-wall at one end and this is where I fell right into the corner of that wall hitting it with the back of my head. Needless to say there was much crying and a visit to the hospital for some stitches.
I still have the scar and the wall still has the dent.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. It's very frustrating when they can't tell you what's wrong, tell you they can't do anything, or give you the wrong diagnosis.

I've been admitted to the ER once, as a kid. A dog scratched me up and I needed a couple stitches on my leg. I sat there with an open cut for 8 hours before seeing the doctor for ten minutes. I think I had to wait so long because they HMO wouldn't clear it until my mom got on the phone and argued with them for an hour. While I was there, they kept a woman who accidentally maced herself waiting for five hours.
In their defense, when my brother dropped to his side clutching his leg and screaming, they got him right in, no questions asked and he had surgery two days after that.

Well I didn't end up in the ER at least, but my most recent hospital experience just solidifies my belief, DOCTORS LIE! He wanted me to go in just for a day or two, two weeks later they finally let me out and I'm still in rehab xp
On the plus side, I did have a few NAs and RNs that were filled with awesome.

Well I had to go to the er Thursday. I was really shocked because I was in and out in under 2 hrs. The DR. and Nurses were really pleasant and compassionate. Usually if I have to go I am stuck there for at least a min of 4 to 5 hours.
