I think people who state that band is not a sport are ignorant humans. because Band IS a sport. at my schoool our band worked in rain smoldering heat, and the freezing cold. while the whimpy foot ball players went into the indoor facility because they couldn't stand the heat, cold or the rain... Our band works harder than any other sport at our school. And look who went to state this season. WE DID!!!. look who actually succeeded during the football season using football games for practices so we would do good in the compettition. WE DID!!! and look who actually got into the finals at every compettition. WE DID!!! not the football team, not the cheerleaders, not the dance team US THE BAND!!!!. so band actually is a sport. like it or not. we are sometimes better then the football team..

I don't consider band a sport. However, before you say how ignorant I am of marching band read what I have to say, if you still disagree please tell me your view. I, having been in marching band for 3 years, know how hard we work. I know that feeling of you arms wanting to fall of, the feeling of dehydration, that feeling of having to do a million push-ups, again. But hard work, long hours in the rain, practicing in the heat, and a million push-ups isn't what makes a sport a sport. I believe (this may not be the dictionary definition) that a sport is a physical activity upon which competition is necessary. Marching band is physical, very much so, I think we can all agree on this, but you don't need to have competition in order to do marching band. You don't need rival schools or other marching bands to do marching band. You don't need judges to do marching band. Whereas in other sports such as Basketball, Football, or Soccer, you need to have opposition in order to play, you need a winner and a loser. In Marching band, you don't. Now by me saying it's not a sport, I'm not saying it's any easier than any other sports, I'm not saying it sucks, I'm simply saying that it's not the same as football, or soccer. Marching band is an Art form rather than a competition, despite what your band directors may tell you. Marching band isn't football, or water polo. Marching band is art.

So you are telling me that figure skating isn't a sport either. and neither is Gymnastics, track, field, Cross Country, or anything else that doesn't require you to have another person present in order to do it isn't a sport either?

DCI Athletes
There you all go. They compore a drum corps marcher's heart rate levels and oxygen intake to that of athletes.
And it should maybe considered a sport. It's a judged event and hard to determine a precise winner, but if ice skating and diving are sports, why not marching band?

I agree that you don't need competition or judges to perform with a marching band. But there are sports such as diving and ice skating. Some sports similar to this are in the Olympics even. But they are judged performances. Yet they are still sports. In my opinion, if these are considered Olympic worthy sports, then why not consider another judged type of performance a sport?

Whatever one thinks of marching band being a sport or not, each is entitled to their own. Why it isn't considered one, nobody can be sure of that. I suppose its the musical factor in it, the visual factors as well. These make the show an arrangement of art. When one thinks about it, football isn't really that pretty...lets face it, boys on the field getting their butts served to them isn't all atractive. Unless of course one is extremely passionate about football. Then looking at it on reasons it should be a sport. We go to band camp..that is preparation. Without bandcamp, a band is behind in the season. (With the freshman learning ""fundies"" and music.) After school practices, the blood sweat and tears...not to mention the drama, marching band is competitive, both in itself and with other bands.

AnimeFan || Oh, that's cool. I was just trying to make the point that it's annoying when people say marching band is easy, and then people in marching band will say that another sport is easy. Every sport has their own thing that they do that's unique and all that. I wasn't saying you couldn't do both. ^^; Our band is super diverse and it has people from all different sports/clubs in it.

I think MB is a sport too ...
If they can cosidered dance a sport or swimming (etc etc)
then why should MB be count out as not being one
Dance and swiming do have to type of art form in them too
and they are still consider a sport
so MB has music and props so does the dance team
they just don't make the music or learn alot of hard stuff with here props most of the time
they don't have to worry about remander all the spots and spins . They don't have to keep watch to make sure they don't hit one of the band meaders or another gaurd ....

[ ] My band director calls marching band "the sport of the arts." That pretty much sums it up. It's in a category all its own... [ ]

i don't know. i think it should be. i remember there was one really hot day in september and all the band members had to wear our wool uniforms. it really sucked. then i saw the football players in shorts and they got this huge water bucket thing. i was jealous. y couldn't they have supplied that for the band?

There's an interesting saying our Marching band has; "If marching band were any easier, it would be called football." I also know that most people in the army say being in marching band makes it easier for them.
