The Wheel Of Time. Series.
Most epic swords/magic/evil books ever written.
The story has so many charecters and is so complex even i cant remember all the names.
Oh, and has some bloody, epic and above all relavent battle scenes.
Have to be patient with it though, lots of plot.

I second the Wheel of Time series. It will take you a good few days to read the first few books and a few weeks to read the other once you get up to six or so. There's a ton of Romance with the man character having at least three different women and lots of fighting with the whole good vs evil plot running around. As for magic, well, almost every main character has some magical ability. Perrin, Mat, Rand, Nyneve, Elain and even my favorite Logain. You'll love it if you like ridiculous ammount of detail and tons of disgusting creatures. Ha!

The Seven Waters Trilogy. Theres four books. Each book is the next generation from the last book. Theres love, action, swords. The thing is though it's based a long time ago in ireland and the names are weird and theres a lot in it about the old faith. But I really like it.

I'd heartily recommend Robin Hobb, Farseer trilogy. Some memorable characters there, and plenty of swords and drama. Main character is an assassin. Need I say more? VERY good read, and deeply satisfying. I think about the books nearly every day, and I've read them over three times!! All six!!! (Yes, I know I'm a geek...)
um...
can't think of any other books within recent memory that i've read for pleasure....besides historical fiction....

I would like to second the Farseer trilogy and also add that the main character gets beat up s lot (not that he's weak or anything) its definitely well written and different from most other books.
