In the morning, Delia awoke to find that Danielle had arisen before her, and was taking a shower in the bathroom. The sound of running water and girlish humming could be heard, and Delia couldn't help but to smile a little as she sat up in the bed. The sheets and covers were in a tangled mess around her legs, and her hair was a sticky mess. It seemed she had been tossing and turning all night, though she felt as though she slept quite soundly. Yawning, Delia got to her feet and stretched, her nightgown falling to her knees. She made her way over to the mini fridge and opened a bottle of water, gulping half of it down thirstily.

When her mind began waking up a little more, she rubbed her eyes and glanced at her surroundings. The posters of celebrities and movies Danielle had hung on her side of the room glistened from the bright sunlight that poured in from the windows. Flashbacks of yesterday's events seeped into her mind as the sunlight did into their room, and she blinked in surprise. For a moment, she could have sworn the scent of cologne washed over her again, and she sniffed her own skin subconsciously.
From inside the bathroom, the water turned off and a few shuffling noises occurred, signifying that Danielle was finished showering and getting dressed for the day. Delia pondered letting her know that she was awake, but instead of saying anything, she checked her phone. No messages.

Hesitantly, she sent a quick message to Jac, unable to help herself.

Hey. Did you sleep well?

After she hit send, she immediately felt like an idiot. He can handle himself! You don't need to worry so much!

As if on cue, Danielle stepped out of the steamy bathroom, donning a band t-shirt and a pair of white shorts, her hair up in a towel. "Good, you're up," she observed, rummaging through her wallet. "You don't have a class till what, eleven? I was thinking we could go grab breakfast or something beforehand."

Yeah, Halloween was crazy hectic but loads of fun! I had a steampunk costume this year, and I think it is by far one of my favorites. smile Sorry I didn't reply sooner; yesterday my friends and I had a big party, which also took up a lot of my time. 3nodding

Jacob "Jac" Fayden McClain

Jac sat at the coffee shop next door to the bakery they had visited last night, sipping the strong brew. His phone vibrated and he found he had a message from Delia. He smiled, having not expected small talk in the form of a text. He replied,

Like a rock. You?

He sent it and placed the phone on the table by someone's newspaper. He looked around, wondering who it belonged to, but when he saw no one, he figured it was one of those coffee shop things where they leave newspapers out to increase the classy feel of the place. He grabbed it and opened it up, leafing through it. He did not get far when he stopped on a page, reading the headline, then reading it again before skimming the article.

Inland City Man Missing: Jac McClain

A young man from Inland City was reported missing on Sunday, by the name of Jacob, Commonly called Jac, McClain. He was last seen Friday afternoon, walking out of the local police station. He is dearly missed. A reward for any information of his whereabouts has been posted by his long time friend, Chris Birchfield. Please contact the Inland City Police Department with any information you might have.

Jac forgot how to breathe. He could not believe this. He tore out the article and shoved it in his pocket, standing and walking out of the coffee shop. What was he going to do?! He stood there on the sidewalk for a while, thoughts racing. He took out his cigarettes with a shaking hand and lit it, putting it between his lips and sucking in the smoke.

Nice! Busy weekend for ya huh? I do this haunted maze at my friend's house every year, but I think I over did it this year on the scaring. I am still missing my voice. I sorta kinda got a bit drunk too, Never done that..., but apparently it was hilarious and I behaved. It was a blast though! Can't wait till next year!

"But do we have time?" Delia asked, glancing out the window at the hustle and bustle of the town. "I want to take a shower first..."
"Then hurry up and get in there," Danielle replied, nudging her towards the bathroom door. Delia sighed but did not protest, setting her phone down on her bed before grabbing a pair of capris and a cotton white blouse and entering the bathroom. She stripped down and turned on the water, which didn't feel as good since Danielle had used up most of the hot water. All the same, it felt nice being able to have a moment to herself under the lukewarm water.
When she was finished bathing, she turned off the water and stepped out of the shower, wrapping her body in a towel and using another to dry her hair as best she could. Before she had a chance to change, there was a loud rapping against the door, making her jump. The towel practically fell from her grasp and she let out a yelp.

"Delia, you have to see this," Danielle called from the other side of the door, a new tone of concern laced in her voice.
Delia sighed and opened the door, clutching the towel to her body. Her sopping wet hair flopped to one side and dripped down her shoulders. "You scared the crap out of me. What is it?"
Danielle held up her iPhone wordlessly, and Delia peered at the glowing screen in confusion. It was a missing person article, on the front page of the local news website. She blinked, scrutinizing it in mild annoyance. "So?"
Danielle shoved the phone closer to Delia's face, as if that would help. "Rub your eyes, De! See anything familiar?"
Delia sucked in a breath when she saw Jac's full name across the screen. It didn't feel real to be looking at it. It couldn't be the same person... could it?
"Oh." Delia felt like a rock had sunk in the pit of her stomach.
"What does it mean?!" Danielle asked wildly, snatching her phone back and flipping through the article.
"I...I don't know..." Delia slumped against the wall, leaning against the frame of the doorway so that she wouldn't fall over. She paced her breathing in an attempt to regain her composure. "Can you hand me my phone please?"
Danielle gave it to her without saying a word and just as Delia began regaining the clearness of her vision, she looked down at the text from Jac and replied quickly:

Pretty good. Is everything okay?

She felt like she had been asking him that way too much, but she wasn't sure how else to assess the situation.

Kiyiya Sakura
Haha, oh my gosh! Sounds like you had lots of fun!^_^ Can't say I got drunk, but I did laugh so hard I cried, and danced like there was no tomorrow xd

Jac's phone buzzed again and he jumped slightly, fishing it out of his pocket and opening the text. He bit his lip when he read the message. It was as if she knew he was having a panic attack. He texted back, hands still shaking,

Yeah, fine. Gotta head to work.

He sent it and took a long drag of the cigarette before tossing it aside and getting on his bike. It really was time for him to head to work, but that was only half the reason he had texted her that. he did not want her asking any more questions. He would think about what to do while he worked. he only hoped his fellow employees and boss had not seen the article.

Luckily, the news was not so big here at the coastal city, and therefore, news of the missing persons alert had not affected his workplace. People went missing all the time, it was no big deal really. He was surely far enough away from Inland to have to worry too much about it. He clocked in and got to work, trying his best to keep himself from fretting the worst.

Delia sat for a moment while she waited for his reply, still in nothing but a towel. Danielle had taken her shocked reaction as a sign she needed to be pampered, and was now drying her hair for her with her own hair dryer. Delia hadn't protested, and was simply sitting on the edge of the bath, her phone clutched in her cold hands. When it blipped again, she looked at the text and sighed, realizing that she was probably worrying too much again.
"It's probably just a huge misunderstanding," Danielle reassured her, as if she read her mind. She turned the hair dryer off and left the bathroom in silence, figuring Delia could handle the rest herself. Delia inhaled and exhaled, pausing for a moment as her thumbs lingered over the keypad.

Ok. If you need anything, let me know.

She hit send and shut the bathroom door, setting her phone on the counter next to the sink. There was nothing more she could do than offer her help. It wasn't her job to worry about him anyway, and she kept having to remind herself that. She wasn't his mother, his caretaker, and she certainly wasn't his girlfriend. As she dried herself and changed into fresh clothes, her mind wandered back to the stitches in his side and how deep the wound had been. It was as if looking into his flesh she had been looking into his soul; she had a feeling there was something deep down inside him he often kept buried under several layers of other things.

Delia grabbed her phone and opened the door when she was fully dried and clothed, revealing a smiling Danielle who looked chipper and ready for the day. Delia figured it was to get her mind off of Jac, but she also found it kind of strange that the blonde could be so carefree all the time. The girls linked arms and they headed for the cafeteria, somewhat ready for their first real college day experience.

The wore on painfully slow. There was hardly any business, as the first day of the new semester had everyone busy at school. This gave Jac ample time to think about the disturbing development he had encountered this morning. Chris Birchfield was not his friend. The man was using the media to his advantage. There had to be a way to get out of this.

All through his shift he thought and thought, but only one thing came to mind, and it was not at all good. The only thin he could think of was to go to Birchfield and beg for his life. Offer up more years of servitude or something. How many did he have left anyway? Five? maybe he could bargain for ten more?

the only other option was either find a way to fake his death, or... do him self in for real. It was apparent that Birchfield was not going to give up. Running certainly was not going to work. The man had billions of dollars at his disposal, though Jac could not believe the greedy b*****d would spend anything on a whelp like him.

By the end of his shift, Jac was both physically and mentally exhausted. He clocked out and went to his bike, straddling it, but not starting it right away. the same question repeated itself over and over again in his head, "What am I going to do?"

The first class of the day for Delia was a two hour lecture for biochemistry. It could have been worse, but Delia liked the better part of the day, which was a lab. It was what involved hands on activities and discussion on all sorts of sciences, even psychology. It helped that the professor was a science fiction nerd as well as a man of science. Danielle, majoring in psychology, was able to share in this excitement with Delia. It had been a while since the two even thought about anything school-related, but it was nice.

Sometime after lunch in the late afternoon, Delia was enjoying her day so much she had almost forgotten about the morning's confusion until Danielle brought it up again.
"There's nothing to tell," Delia tried explaining, unable to find any real explanation for the article in the news. She didn't want to believe that anyone was actually looking for him, that he had run away, but she knew it to be true to some extent. What that extent was, she wasn't entirely sure, but it made her worry all the same.
"I just don't want you to get caught up in something weird," Danielle responded, popping a stick of gum in her mouth.
"I'm fine," Delia lied, stuffing her hands in the pockets of her sweatshirt.
Danielle didn't speak about it any longer, and instead left her alone in the courtyard under the mid-afternoon sun. She could tell when someone needed to be alone, and right now was one of those times.
Delia sighed and checked her phone. Classes were done for the day, and her brain felt like a pile of mush in that moment. She decided a walk and some fresh air was probably her best option.
I'm fine, she thought to herself as she began walking. But is he?

Jac found himself staring at his phone, Delia's last text message playing at the back of his mind. What could she do though? He was beginning to feel frustrated. Why couldn't life be simple?! He banged his fists on his handlebars, hanging his head. Maybe he could run. He could go farther away, to another state maybe. Somewhere too far for Birch to reach. Problem though. He was low on funds. He was stuck for now.

With a sigh, Jac started up his bike and peeled out of the parking lot of his work. He needed a quiet place to relax and think clearly. Most of all, he needed music. He rode around for a while, looking for anyplace that looked quiet and lacking people. He found one. A small park, not too far from the beach. It was relatively empty, save a few kids on the swings and a man walking a huge mastiff dog. He parked his bike and found a spot to lay in the grass. He only wished he had some music.

Delia clutched tightly to her phone in her pocket, stroking the screen nervously. She walked slowly, but with a look on her face that made it seem like she had somewhere to be. Really though, she just needed to walk, to move around, keep her mind off of any worries she might have. As if on cue, her phone buzzed in her hands, and she took it out in a flash. Her heart lurched then sunk in the same moment when she realized it wasn't Jac, but Mel, an old friend of hers.
Hey. How's college life treating ya?
She sighed, gazing bitterly down at the screen for a moment and stopping at the edge of the sidewalk where concrete met grass. There was a cluster of trees just beyond the crosswalk in front of her, probably somewhere near the ocean. She could smell it now, the salty water and the sound of waves sloshing over the shore. How she had wandered so far in the amount of minutes she walked fervently, she had no idea. But it was a nice moment of silence all the same. There wasn't a car in sight.

It's great, she replied to the text after crossing the walkway. I love it here. She had no energy to make small talk over texts with her old pal, and after she hit send she hid her phone back in her pocket and began humming to herself quietly as she walked among the many shadows of trees. Sunlight came from the west, the sun a mere handful of hours away from setting. It glittered gold over everything, and lit up the emerald trees and grass. Delia's humming turned into singing, a little lullaby she'd learned when she was in choir in high school. Her own singing calmed her down and brought her back to earth as she paced herself, winding her way through the trees.

Jac had his eyes closed, letting the warmth of the setting sun on his cheeks and arms soothe his turbulent mind. He could almost here the waves in the distance, but he could definitely smell them. He pictured the perfect ocean side life, a nice big house with big windows, an ocean view, bills and shopping lists stuck to the fridge with silly faced magnets, a fireplace, perhaps two. It's a big house.

Something drew his attention away from one of his daydreams. A song. He had longed for music, now he was hearing it. Was his imagination that good? He turned to see where it was coming from and sat up quickly when he saw her. "Delia?" he called. This was what? The second or third time they had run into each other by accident? And this was only the fourth day since he had met her. Small world all of a sudden.

He waved at her, dead grass sticking to the back of his shirt and tangled in his still rather long hair. "Great minds think alike or something huh? Done with school for the day?"

Delia heard her name and her voice faltered, the singing stopped. Relief spread through her when she saw him, sitting in the grass, in tact, relaxing. She made her way over to him with a small smile. Her honey brown eyes glimmered in the sunlight and she nodded, unable to hide her giggling at the grass in his hair. She reached up and brushed some of it off without thinking much of it. Laughter bubbled again from her lips and she nodded. "Yup. I decided to take a walk; I was pretty busy today. How are you?" Though she was still smiling, the concern in her eyes was evident, like a cloud passing over the glare of the evening sun.

Jac baced his torso up with his arms, fingers lacing through the grass as Delia approached. When she brushed some grass out of his hair he reached up and finished the job, shaking his hair out as a final check, then smoothing it back down. His hair was wild no matter what, but he always attempted to keep it somewhat managed.

"Pretty good. Sore a bit. It was slow at work, so there was a lot of just standing around and looking for things to do." He shrugged, leaning back on his arms. "What classes did you have today?"

Delia's eyes flicked down to the side of his torso when he mentioned he was sore. As he spoke, she sat down in the grass next to him, leaning back and crossing her legs. She thought for a moment about what it would be like to climb up into one of those trees and live there for a while. The silly thought passed and she looked at him again to answer the question. "Biochemistry, biology, and psychology. My brain feels like mush now," she replied with a small smile. "It's nice to be able to just sit someplace quiet and relax."

"That's exactly why I came here. Quiet and relaxation." He said with that boyish smile that meant he was being sincere. It seemed, whenever Delia was around, his worries took a back seat, and he felt lighter, like the weight he had accumulated from all of his shady misdeeds temporarily lifted from his shoulders. It was a good feeling.

"Ah, school is overrated." he said half joking, laying back on the grass and watching the clouds slowly condense. It seemed there would be a ocean layer of fog tonight, but right now, the sun was still showing brightly as it approached the horizon.

That boyish smile was beginning to be the cause of the butterflies in Delia's stomach, and she found herself looking at him too much lately. In an attempt to bring her mind back to the ground, she laid back in the grass and sighed, closing her eyes for a moment. It was odd; she never imagined herself feeling so calm all of a sudden, when earlier she had been panicking a little too much for her own good. She opened her eyes and laughed, poking him gently on his arm. "School's not all that bad," she replied with a little bit of a smile, "It can be pretty crappy at times, but the benefits overcome it." She paused for a moment, not wanting to go into some parental rant about how education was important; she figured he'd want nothing to do with such things.

Her hands dropped to her sides and felt the cool grass against her skin, and she smiled again. "I wish I could just sit here like this forever." She hadn't realized she'd said it, or how silly it sounded coming from her lips but it was what she felt and she said it regardless.
