Here is the thing though, It might not have been the butler as for all you know there might have been no one at the estate the day before who got the mail. So for all we know it could also be the cook. Everyone else seemed to be at a place with windows so the cook was in an area where he was kind of or mostly hidden, so he could have murdered the person. So that riddle can be interpreted anyway to make any one of those people the person who committed the murder.

I'm back!
Three brothers in an endless race. A family Marathon. The first is short and fat and trudges slowly on. The second is tall and thin and keeps a steady pace. The third is like the wind, speeding through the race. "For though he's surely number 1." the other brothers say, "He's second in a way."
Why?

Are they the hands on a clock? The short and fat one is the hour hand; the steady one is the minute hand, and the one like the wind is the second hand. biggrin

It sounds like one of the riddles Gollum asks Bilbo in The Hobbit. I think that's my favorite chapter in the whole book because it has so many fun riddles! heart
I think the answer is "time." (And if I'm not mistaken, this is the part where Bilbo doesn't get the answer right away and is starting to panic, so he croaks out the word "time," trying to ask for more time, but it turns out that "time" was the answer.)
More riddles! Brainteasers are great. whee

Yes, it's time. Very old and very well known so that didn't really pose any challenge. Here's a little brain teaser (still fairly simple): Your last good ping-pong ball fell down into a narrow metal pipe embedded in concrete one foot deep. How can you get it out undamaged, if all the tools you have are your tennis paddle, your shoe-laces, and your plastic water bottle, which does not fit into the pipe?
