I'm a beginning Loli, and I don't have much say, but I agree with the quality thing. But I believe you can use synthetic lace as long as it's not shiny - and in small amounts and widths. In some cases it can look nice, yes, and it certainly is easier to find. But from what i've heard, it melts and doesn't withstand washings very well, and in addition from my experience it doesn't handle an iron very well.

Perhaps we need a topic purely about lace so as to stop spamming this one?

Contradicting my previous statement-
By the way, a question on lace - can you find cotton lace in synthetic-lace's patterns? For example, there's this darling rose-printed synthetic lace that I'm unfortunately returning because it reflects light like a mirror. It would be very nice if it was cotton.

If the lace you're talking about is venise rose lace, it's pretty hard to find in cotton. Most venise laces come in poly-cotton blends if not fully synthetic blends. They're a bit less obnoxious than raschel, and so are easier to integrate in small doses [I'm using a rose-pattern venise that's a 40-60 cotton to polyester blend]. If you use it just for a hem treatment rather than a centralized decorative element, it should be okay even if it's a bit shiny.

If it's raschel, though, it depends. Raschel laces are "stamped" into a weave, more or less. Cotton raschel does exist, but it's even harder to find than cotton venise unless you buy online.

-C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-

The netting-type look? Sorta-kinda. I agree with what Kate said, usually when I see that kind of lace that's not all polyester, it's usually a combination of poly-cotton and cotton.

Kate, don't Moitie use poly-cotton or something?

Moitie uses an almost high polyester content lace if not completely polyester, if I remember right. They have synthetic chiffon for decoration on a lot of their more recent pieces, though, and netting/embroidery lace most of the time for their blouses from the look of things.

thank you everyone for the great advice!!! i just got back from a 9 day trip to California, so i'm sorry it took so long to reply. i got my lace at walmart for, like, a dollar. i'll do better next time ^^ i do plan on getting this cotton blue ruffle that i'm going to put on the edge, to make the skirt a little bit longer.
thank you everyone for saying it's nicely crafted, it was my first time sewing an outfit together, and while a friend helped me understand some of the stuff, i sewed it myself, so your comments really mean a lot to me
so thank you again ^^
to spuntino: yes the pink does have a pattern on it, i didnt want a plain color like my alice dress so i got a pink fabric with tiny hearts on it (i think thier hearts anyway) since i dont like huge prints

A pattern that is subtle tends to look very nice for sweet outfits. (:
I wasn't sure from the photos, though, so it's good to know that my eyes weren't tricking me. haha

gothic_lolita_chic--
I also have to say that your items look beautifully crafted!
The issue of quality of materials has already been pointed out, so I will not repeat it, but I will say I am glad that you are willing to take and use the advice. I can't wait to see what else you come up with. smile
If you have any questions with patterns, actual construction or with materials, I hope you'll feel free to ask. A lot of us are very experienced with how to sew on a budget without compromising too much on quality and I'm sure we'd all be happy to help.

I made a choker/pearl collar today to match my Meta Apple Print skirt. I used glass pearls, a 5-split clasp, and pewter rose charm from Hobby Lobby [I'm thinking of changing the rose for a small pewter apple I saw there]. The apple itself is from a necklace I bought at Claire's. It came on a hideous black chain and I wanted something classier.

I'm going to see if I can find another apple charm like this one tomorrow and also going to make the same necklace over again with a strawberry I have in a similar style, but with pink glass pearls. :3

I think it came out pretty well! I'm debating adding a ribbon bow over the top of the pendant, though.

As I said on your journal-- this is adorable. smile I really like the contrast between the high elegance of the pearl strands and the more casual-retro apple charm.
Pearls can really look good with retro inspired pieces, but it's easy to make them look either too "old lady" or too elegant and classical without the whimsical appeal. This all works well together, and the apple helps to tone down the pearls and give them the right feel.

You and all your talent! It makes me terribly jealous, but terribly pleased that you're doing a JSK for me. :3

I'm so excited to see the rest of it finished! The skirt portion you showed me was just yummy!

Working with red us so refreshing after all of that ivory. e_e

But I'm afraid I'm falling in love with your JSK the more I work on it.
Desperately need to make another for myself. Hell, possibly in the same color.

We both have insanely long hair, and our measurements are pretty close ... from behind, we'd probably actually look like twins. biggrin
