Chiharu is not really looking for people as the area seems abandoned to her. She is considering if the place is "normal", if the fauna and flora are behaving as usual. She checks the "health of the kamis", if nature and the elemental kamis are undisturbed she believes everything is fine.

@Chiharu:

As with the case with open areas, most of the air kami are flying about, helping the plants move with the breeze.

Most.

A couple are acting rather docile, milling about slowly. Sometimes air kami stop to observe things they find interesting before dashing off again, but this definitely is not that. It's more of a sluggish pace. It's only a handful of the otherwise plentiful numbers of air kami, but they're there.

@ Ayame:

Things seem peaceful enough. You don't see anyone, threatening or otherwise.

The fields here are smaller in area than with Efude, but there's also fewer homes. This probably once belonged to an entire large peasant family, who were probably displaced with the war.

Chiharu grabs the sides of her hakama lifting it a bit, just enough to walk with no difficulties when she leaves the road in an almost hipnotized, curious, semblance. She moves slowly towards the place where the sluggish kami are gathered, in order to check the place.

She is unaware of how wet, or deep, an abandoned rice padding can be.

Tsuyoshi would nod, a bit less than enthused, yet as he ran off toward the buildings to check and see if there was any inhabitants or signs of recent life there, he moved with diligent urgency. He had to focus on doing his job better, the best it could be done, if he was to make up for his mistakes and his grandfather's.

He'd pay mind not to go out of sight, unless it was only very briefly to poke his head inside a building. If he didn't find anyone alive, or anything in need of further investigation, he'd return to Ayame to stand guard once done looking.

@ Chiharu: These are more vegetable fields and not rice paddies. However, it doesn't stop you from stepping in through some pretty dank puddles to get to where she is going.

--------------------

@ Chiharu & Tsuyoshi:

Weirdly enough, your paths diverge and re-convene around the same area; Chiharu, your walk through the abandoned fields lead you to the 'center' of the general area, where it seems the air kami are gathered around. Tsuyoshi, you check a couple buildings and find no occupants, though there are some signs of recent occupation. You bump into Chiharu as you are about to check another house, probably the bigger one.

Inside, as casually as can be, there are four men of varying ages (from mid 20's to mid 40's) who are just lounging around. There's a kind of smoke-mist in the room, which smells potently of sweet flowers... but not quite.

One of the gentlemen (who are all peasants) looks to Tsuyoshi and, behind him, Chiharu, and gives a friendly smile and lifts one hand in a wave. He nods his head to the two of them. In his other hand, he holds a strange looking pipe.

The other three men either don't notice you or don't care.

About the room it definitely looks a tad destitute, but they've been getting by on some harvested food, but most of what is strewn about (in terms of leftovers) is starting to rot.

At first Chiharu moves in cautious steps followingTsuyoshi into the house. She is a bit confused by the scene inside. The smoke seems to have something to do with the mood taking the place but she quite dosen't grasp why is it.

The lethargic manners of that man catches her attention, as lethargic as the kami she sensed before.

Ayame frowned as she inspected the landscape. This was meant to be farmlands as well, still relatively close to Kyuden Doji, but it seemed the Crane were truly devastated by the war. Her frown turned a little more sad as she began to realize that even without the assassination attempts, this trip was probably going to be a heavy one, surveying the devastation that still lingered across the lands.

It didn't take her long to memorize the details she needed for the area, her picture-perfect memory needing only a glimpse to get it right, leaving her trotting back towards the other two as they were looking into the house, an inkling of curiosity for what they might have found that seemed to hold them there so long.

@ Tsuyoshi & Chiharu:

"Hey there, folks," the man who waved to them said in an extremely casual tone. "Are you here to escape the cold? It's a tad too chilly yet for our tastes. Would you like to rest a spell with us?" He looked to be about 30, with straight black hair in a bowl cut. His was a bit on the dirty side, but if cleaned up, he'd probably be considered handsome.

Two men looked older than him: one brawny with a shaved head and a couple missing teeth; the other, with his long dark-brown hair tied back into a long ponytail, who had one of those weasely faces that made him look like he was up to no good. The youngest one there had a curled mess of the same color hair as the weasel guy, haphazardly cut short to about an inch in length, but had the same facial build as the brawny guy.

You two hear Ayame clip-clopping this way! Would you like to introduce her to your peasantry?

Chiharu would nod in disbelief. This is a serious lack of manners for the heimin, especially crane heimin.
She waved her right hand towards the men urging them to assume a more proper posture.

—You, please stand up and offer a proper greet to Miya Ayame-sama, the Imperial cartographer.

(Urge to bat at GustyFox's avatar's hair... rising...)

@ Tsuyoshi:

The TN would have been higher if it had been post-incident, long after they had smoked whatever they were, but they were smoking it now. The burnt flowery smell, the pipe they used... all signs that it was definitely opium. You had no doubts about this.

@ Chiharu:

The one who's spoken up to now makes a friendly smile. "Sure thing, boss," he'd respond, and look over to the others. "Come on, a lady's made a request. Put down the pipes, just for a second. They'll be there later."

Giving a series of groans, they'd soon nod and clamber to their feet, as the speaker joins them. They'd move around the table they were sitting at and line up in formation. Their appearances were disheveled, and they look emaciated, but here they are.

"So, ah... is this some sort of formal event or something? No one gave us any notice," the talker would ask.

Tsuyoshi winced, and tried not to exclaim or put his palm to his face- at this point, she had already called out the peasants, and, at a glance, Miya-sama was on her way, so there was little else for it but to allow that to take its course.

He wasn't certain... what exactly was to be done about this though. Killing them for smoking seemed a tad extreme, and there didn't seem to be other peasants about whom would be taught any kind of lesson by it. Yet he could hardly carry out any other punishment on the lot of them alone other than confiscating the stuff and... burning it? Tossing it in the water? How did one get rid of it without just making things worse?

"Miya-sama is surveying all the empire and correcting maps. And making notes of what she finds," he said, looking much less than pleased at the moment. Perhaps that wasn't enough though- some peasants might have taken pride, and cared some little bit about something like what the empire might think of their village, but likely not such layabouts. "Speaking of, where exactly did you find all of this?"
PostPosted: Mon Dec 11, 2017 9:44 pm

"Oh, uh... is it really important?" the weasely one would say, a bit nervous. "We, ah... there was this merchant, see... from Ryoko Owari... we were traveling back after the war, and, er... eheheheheheh..."

"It's not a bid deal," the youngest one would tell Tsuyoshi, rather matter-of-factly, apparently oblivious to the social implications of having such an attitude with a samurai.

"Soetsu, mind yourself," the handsome one chided. "Sorry about that, boss. But the Miya can look around. We were just... taking a short break, before going back out to the fields to toil, yessir." He tried to put on his winningest, most sincere smile towards the two Crane.

Something of note, is that the land here looks completely untoiled. You'd be surprised if these have even lifted a finger once, especially contrasting Efude Village where everyone was so very hard at work. Things there definitely looked much better off than here.

Well, since nobody was stopping her, Ayame trotted on up to the building, though she made it easy on them to change their minds, not looking like she wanted to stop here. At least until she noticed that there were people inside.

"What's this? People actually live here? Well they certainly have their work cut out for them. These lands have seen much better days." she began, before blinking and giving the daintiest of coughs. Her face screwed into a grimace of disconcertion, and she sniffed the air just to make sure she had actually smelled what she thought she smelled.

Chiharu remained silent for now. Allowing the Imperial and her clan-mate to speak without interrupting.

She was focused on the heimin, already preparing words to en-light them about proper behavior in the presence of samurai and in the eyes of the fortunes.

((Waiting on DM say-so on what to roll to determine appropriate

Tsuyoshi met the Imperials gaze, looking visibly perturbed, and let out a breath to steady himself before responding. "I see it is quite the large task you have cut out for you. I believe I shall need to send word to have someone spared to help organize and muster your efforts. It would behoove you to make sure they have a positive first impression of your work ethic, I am sure."

What a time not to have some peasant he could trust to run a message back to the capital, but the next time they passed by any other establishment or stopped a within a day's ride he had every intent to alert them and see if someone trusted could be sent to do just that, of whatever rank could be spared.

"Now, one of you go and bring out the opium. All of it if you please."

He felt his hand want to reach for his sword as he said it, but resisted, for the moment.

If none of them seemed to react with hostility to this, he'd turn and bow to Ayame. "I'm sorry you had to bear witness to such a shameful display, Miya-sama. After the misunderstandings so far, I felt full forthrightness best. Please, do not let this bother you or distract you from surveying the land any further." Rising from the bow as he finished speaking to her.
