Pasa nods eagerly, accepting the sandwich with a grin. "I like that use much better, sirrah." Then he sobers and pins Kerobian with a look. "Tell me what happened." he begs earnestly.

"When I do things with my thoughts, I use what is inside of me to make it work... but you use what is outside of you... only, if ye didn't have something inside of ye that allowed ye to use that which is outside of ye, it wouldn't happen... right? You are what is called an Academic, or Psionic, mage. You use the power that is within you to make things happen. I am an example of Ambient magic, someone who wields the power around them to make things happen. The fundamental difference is this: Psionics have to build up their strength from within, while Ambients must work to control their powers and rein in a great deal of energy. Now, can you name the four basic elements we elemental mages use?

He chews his lip and answers. "I think I know... though we always spoke of six in our tribe. There are the fundamental elements of fire, water, wind, and earth. Our tribe always added light and dark as well. The four or six as I see it are pairs... at least that is what the wiseman said. Fire and water, wind and earth, light and dark... and the spells a person uses comes from mixing various elements in varying degrees. But he didn't understand everything about it... We didn't have a shaman in the tribe... only a wiseman."

Partially, yes. Light and Darkness, or, as they are properly known, Quintessence and Shadow, are not elements, but energies...they are two of the fundamental energies that make up the Elements. Water, Fire, Earth, and Air are the four basic elements that make up elemental magic, though there are eight others. Now, can you guess why people would have power over an element?

Exactly right. A person's nature often selects his element. Now, usually, this is not specific, most people are only unbalanced a little between the four, 30% Fire and 20% Water. Sometimes, however, the balance is very upset, and someone's nature resembles that of the element. When that happens, the Elementals recognize that being as Kindred, and will help him and work for him. Make sense so far? Do you know your elementals?
