We used to watch the stars at night. She would close her eyes, breathe, and wish like there was no tomorrow. I wanted her to believe that her wishes made it to the stars. Sometimes it was hard to look at her hopeful face and know the truth: wishing was for children. When we got older, we faced the cold reality, but for as long as it was possible, her belief in the stars would remain my priority, until the day she was old enough to know that a star was far more likely to fall than to grant a wish.
