TeaParty, please tell us where you went to on your visit to China? Were you visiting family? 3nodding biggrin
PostPosted: Fri Jul 07, 2006 4:53 am

Wal-Mart is evil... domokun

I was just a tourist xd We were the first 3 days in Shanghai, and then we took this plane to this city with about 4 million people (small city, apparently. Nearly all of Norway sweatdrop ) and took this cruise boat thing up the yanxi (sp?) river. Which was very nice  Saw the three gorges and the dam and all of that. And tons of small farmers. Then we ended up in chongquin (sp?), apparently the biggest city in the world with 30 million people. Apperently tho, it is not the biggest city in the world (didn't really seem half as big as beijing or shanghai, then again we only went to the airport). This is because they merged several other "small" towns with *only* 600 000 inhabitants to the big city (600 000 is the size of the capital of norway, Oslo. These cities had nothing *connecting* them to chongquin, cept roads). Then we went to xi'an and saw the terra cotta warriors (very impressive). Only stayed there for a day tho, and then we went to Beijing and stayed there for 6 days. Beijing had changed a lot since we were there last year. You can really tell it is building up towards the olympics. Last year there was mud most places, this year it has all been replaced with flowers and trees and public parks. Beijing really is funky, and we did tons of shopping there (everything is uber cheap). I have a friend who went to china during the winter vacation, and he bought a rolex. I unfortunatly only got to buy a calvin klein watch, as they do not have rolexes for girls xd

That sounds like a fascinating trip, TeaParty. I've been seeing photos of the changes of Beijing and the preparation for the Olympics. BBC has a correspondent who is covering that. What I envy you most is seeing the terra cotta warriors. They were overshelming just in the National Geographic. Every last one a replica of only one fighter down to the smallest detail. No duplicates, no small duplication of some parts, all of each piece a unique statue of one person. surprised The dam you saw is changing the lives of milllions and not just people but whole ecosystems! You witnessed for us that China is a huge nation and one with a population of huge numbers. Thanks for your report. The shopping sounds great, too!

You can see the olympics over the entire country. It's just everywhere, their really proud of it. From the tv comercials to the coka cola slogan "when you drink cola, you support the olympics in beijing 2008" (or something... which made me mad considering china still has mant poor and under-nourished people and children)

Actually I heard by the guide that each soldier was basicly made up, the face might just be fantasy, from a real warrior or fra maker itself. It takes half a year to fix one warrior, and theres a small gang of profesionals that do it, then they have a huge team or archeologist students from the nearby university (atleast thats the kind of students I think they where)

For the dam they moved 1,3 million people, take or give according to the source (protesters vs. government). All the farmers got new houses (each housemold member for 16 000 yuen to build a new house along with money replacing tea bushes, crops, farm animals etc.), while others got to chose to go live with families in other cities, or move there by themselves. If they could not get jobs, they got about 140 yuen per month per person to buy food etc. and free accomodation. This was an improvement to most farmers, as the old houses did not have electricity or water (it was so wierd, seeing electrical cords out in no where going to one small house with one family). Apparently 90% of the relocation people are happy, the real sufferes are the old who had to move with the families to the cities (apparently). They basicly had to sit inside the apartments all day, and missed the *really* beautiful scenery they got from the village where they were born andraised. All they wanted to do was to go back to their village, but they couldnt as it was now under water (or would be within 2009).

Today the river is a river, but in october this year their gonna raise the water level another 20 m (or so), and they will do the same in 2009, and then the river will have no current whatsoever (well, more or less.. itsa dam) and be one hugelake. All along the chinese had put up measuring lines, saying "125 m" above sea level. Their going up to 165 I think, and its at 120- something now, it varies depending on where in the river you are...

China has the worlds fastest booming economy in the world, although the class differences are great, when you go to the big cities you really can't imagen it being a poor country (although when you move out of them you can)... anyhow new rant about china... I really like china... it's a great country and most of them are really friendly... everywhere you go you feel really safe, even as a female traveler (unlike many other places in the world, where you dont even want to be walking alone in a crowded place during daylight *glares at egypt*)

I'll stop now....

I know it's better to take Austrailia, but I always end up going for South America. But then again, speaking of China, there is something to be said for choosing the red army and taking China and Russia. The last game I played, I took North and South America, and even though it cost me many plastic troops, I never lost control of Japan domokun (which I started with). The game lasted 6 and a half hours and we never finished.

I would like to go to China though, it sounds fun. I'm on the border of dirt poor though, so that's not much of an option. sweatdrop

Well, gamers, I don't know what to say other than to hope (and it looks like you do) enjoy challenging eachother in doing so. We play old fashioned board games or newspaper crsooword puzzels here if we want to challenge eachother ... something I wish we would do more often.

I find TeaParties descriptions of China very interesting and relevant. I know that my daughter already is in debt to China because the USA as borrowed that much on the Chinese market that part of our nation ENORMOUS debt is to China. Through the social services we receive today, we go in to debt to China. How often is what you buy made in China? Your electronics, even? We drink apple juice from apples in China everyday. China has measured its dynasties in millenia and we thrill to the 200+ years of being a republic. What happens in China during our lifetimes will affect every one of us. 3nodding

SaferSatunX, you're going to college, aren't you and speak English? College years were lean ones for me. I earned $2.10/hour and bought $11 of food a week (chicken necks for stew the only meat). or are you in the Central Valley where their are towns of immigrantes sin electricidad y agua just like the poor people in China.

The US is in figures the poorest country in the world. It has the biggest loan to the world bank. If you consider some of the african countries who are infact pretty rich, but kept in powerty because they can't even pay the rents of their loan, US is in deep s**t. The loan is growing everything year (bush is a great guy with economics), and not a shits being done about it.

The class differences in the Us has always scared me, it is wierd to think about a rich country where people ar forced to go to places like wal-mart as the only place to afford clothes. And the amount of cheap junk food thats pracked on all the poor people, cuz they can't afford anyting else.. just, makes me a bit sick...

I heard of a private school in english, who's forcing their students to learn chinese now, as the chinese market is growing so much it'll really mean a lot to the business in the future, more than it does now

@Ani - I'm only poor because I'm kind of lazy and only started looking for a job other than working for my dad semi-recently. Unfortunately, nobody seems willing to hire me. Though it's funny speaking of Wal-Mart, I have a hook-up there, so if I can get a ride (because I have no car) I might actually work there). xp

My dad is self-employed, so we do as well as the business he gets, and because he's been doing a little better recently, we get the benefits. I got so lucky that the government is paying the majority of my college funds through FAFSA.

@TeaParty - I've heard differeing reports about the U.S. loan, but either way, it isn't looking good. I want to learn Chinese, because it will be so big in the business world, but I would like to learn a couple of other languages first.

The U.S loan is going straight to hell, and I'm pretty sure it's the biggest loan in the world. The people who own Wal-Mart are some of the richest people in the world, and they still have 1,6 million lawsuits from women only in the U.S not getting payed properly (I dont understand how that can be legal, I think 3 months back they were sued again, this time by the normal workers because in their 10 hour long shifts (or so...) they wenr't allowed lunchbreaks. Add that to minimum wage and its no wonder the people working there look all.. .drugged...

Yes, I hate Wal-Mart with my guts. They just hit our newspapers 2 weeks ago, apparently a norwegian investment company is not going to invest in wal-mart anymore, because of moral/ethical reasons. Thats common with the drug and weapon industry.

I want to learn spanish (currently am, but not very good), italien, chinese, japanese, hindi, french and there was some other one too.... languages are fun to know but a bugger to learn.. hate german tho

Just want to let ya'll out there know that I wont be poking around the cult from Wednesday to Saturday. That said, have fun with the trivia that I initiated. Bugger.
Now, I'd say it was a gyp, but that's just rude to the gypsies.

I'll do all right...

As a college age student myself my food of choice is ramen. Did you eat a lot of that, Ani?

Have you been reading my mind, Launcher? I was going to have ramen for lunch yesterday as I thought I was going to be by myself, but ChiA stayed home from school and I had to have something more substantial.

As a student I ate LOTS of ramen! Ramen came to mind this week, though, because I was rewatching our downloaded Naruto episodes after being disgusted by the dubbed ones. Yesterday I watched episode 101 where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura try to get Kakashi to take off his mask so that they can see his face ... they tried treating him to ramen at one point.

I wonder if I bought some fresh udon noodles I couldn't dye them with blue food coloring and invent a Blue Ramen Soup for Earthbound? mrgreen

Ahem! As a college age person aren't you in a place of higher learning?
