I would say no, since you made it a point to be muttering the entire time. I imagine it would be exceedingly difficult to hear a whispered conversation about... what, 20' away, while making it a point to audibly ramble incoherently.
As a roleplaying standpoint, I always assume I cannot hear a whispered conversation, because that's the entire point of whispered conversations. If I'm playing a character who is really really interested in hearing it, and there's no audible noise to drown it out between them and me, I could try a perception check (there's a DC for it listed under Perception in the skills section), or I could always try Stealth to get right up in their business without their noticing (but pretty impossible if they're already aware of me; that's more useful for a character already in the middle of infiltrating).
Regardless, no, you didn't hear, and your time to do something about that has passed.
