Aelgeirr would look out into the streets and try to determine the flow of things for a second. "Gonna have to hope it does. As for ourselves, let's head back to the bar and board that up. That sound safe enough?"

Mikah, the faithful seeker.

The girl struggled to get down but she was already inside the building when she finally did. She fell down to her knees looking at the floor, quiet. She felt terrible and desperate that she couldn't go out and help because she knew that if she would try to go out she would endanger her companions.-What is going on?.- she asked with a soft voice.- Why are this creatures attacking? It's not normal!.

The militia had been holding off creatures like giant scorpions, spiked felines, multi-limbed boars, and the like; however, when Ambra's signal lit up the sky, they began to quickly withdraw.

As you observe while descending, the withdrawal is orderly, and many troops take shelter within what buildings they can.

Aelgeirr would shrug and pick up the half elf. "We've done our part. We need to get to safety now!" He'd open up the nearest door and carry the young woman through it. "Hurry up now! GO GO GO! The Eladrin would hold the door open for the other two and would pray that they hustled.

Ambra nods at the Eladrin. Though she was uncomfortable leaving the guards behind she knew she was at her limit and they had done all that they could really do. She follows Aelgeirr inside to safety and hopes the guards soon do the same for themselves.

Dwalin Vikramsson
Captain of The Guard

Dwalin hurried past Aelgeirr into the building, once inside he turned towards the others "It doesn't make alot of sense for a town this far out to have so little guards protecting it and more importantly it seemed as if this wasn't an uncommon thing here."

With all of the party inside, Aelgeirr would close the door and wedge it shut with his spear, just in case. "I wouldn't know. Heh. I doubt that the townsfolk would know. Who knows, if we're lucky, they'll pay us to find out."

As the four of you moved back towards the tavern, down the otherwise-abandoned street, a massive wolf, larger than any horse you had ever seen, noticed you and bared its fangs. You started to duck back inside as it charged, closing the distance at rapid pace.

Dwalin pushes his way inside. It draws closer.

Mikah is ushered inside. Closer still.

Ambra quickly hurries in. It's nearly upon the eladrin! It leaps!

Gripping the handle tightly, Aelgeirr falls back, the door slamming shut at the last second.

The next morning...

"This is a travesty."

The mayor would rest her elbows upon her desk, looking down in frustration as she ran her fingers through her white hair. "Do we have a casualty count yet?"

"We're still confirming. It looks like twenty-four dead, with only seven of which were Clearwell residents. We're... still trying to total the number of injured." The soldier from last night would pause, then add, "We suspect the number to be well over one hundred, ma'am."

The night had mostly gone without incident. It is up to you how much you slept, if at all, with the sound of large ferocious monsters prowling the streets. But there didn't seem to be any attacks on the buildings themselves. No more casualties occurred after you took shelter, it seems.

The following morning, some militia found you, and mentioned a Lieutenant Zathers had sent them to track you down and bring you to him. If questioned why, they would say he said something about answers owed.

The streets were, as indicated the night before, empty of any creatues, save for those slain. Apparently, they retreated with the night come dawn - like the Lieutenant had indicated would happen.

You had been brought to the mayor's office, of all places. The mayor was an older woman, human, late 50's, by the name of Susanna Liartes. At a quick glance, she looked like she was in good health normally, but she seems especially run-down and ragged at this moment, far worse than any of you, or anyone else you've seen, and was currently a disheveled mess.

Lieutenant Zathers was likewise human, and now better visible now, now that it wasn't night. In his early 40s, he had the appearance of a grizzled war veteran, with extremely short brown hair, a square jaw, and unmoved eyes. You suspect he didn't grow up simply as another Clearwell town militia. His armor had a gash around his midsection, and he has an untreated wound that he seems to be ignoring. You can't tell the seriousness of it.

There were some other of the guard here as well (Dwalin and Aelgeirr would know via insignia that they were two sergeants and two corporals, so no bottom-rung troops), which were either here for a briefing, or simply because of you. It was hard to tell.

"Madam mayor, what are your orders?" Zathers would ask her after a prolonged science.

The mayor would lift her head again, giving a brief, weak smile. "Sorry." She would look at the four of you - she had noticed you before, but your presence seems to finally be acknowledged by the weary woman. "And who are they?"

"From what I gathered, they are adventurers. They were actually critical in helping evacuate the streets and minimizing casualties beyond the first wave. They also valiantly fought against some of the beasts themselves."

The mayor would look to the officer, then to all of you. "Ah. Well, you have my thanks, but if you've come for medals, I'm afraid I'm going to have to postpone..." she would say dryly to you.

"I called them here," Zathers would clarify. "Since they risked their lives freely, I felt they were owed an explanation about what happened last night. Maybe they can even help us."

At this point, I'll give all of you any chances to respond before the conversation continues.

Dwalin Vikramsson
Captain of The Guard

Dwalin stood silent among the group as they spoke, he obviously got very little sleep last night but it was something that was not uncommon given his previous position it was not until an explanation was mentioned that he spoke up "I do have some questions the obvious one being, how did this happen and why is the city not helping to protect this town?"

Aelgeirr merely listened. He spent most of the night on guard in case something like another big wolf tried to break into the house. He spent his morning trying to work his spear free from the door. So great was the force that the wolf brought to bear against that door. It's a small miracle that it didn't bust open.

"What?!" the lieutenant said loudly, clenching his fists. "A lot of those who died last night were my fellow-

He stopped though when the mayor cleared her throat. He had looked at her and she made a dismissive wave, and he would stop talking, standing at attention.

"That's entirely a valid question, from an outsider. And as the lieutenant said before, you were promised answers," Liartes would respond. "The town of Clearwell doesn't have a standing army. We have a militia of volunteers who act to police the town from riffraff and vagabonds. You know, horse thieves, highwaymen, the like. For the past hundred years, that's the only thing we've needed to worry about... save for the occasional drunken barroom fight. But sometime yesterday, as we discovered shortly before dusk, the Orb of Kendar was stolen from its vault."

Those of you who want to give it a shot, give me either an Arcana or History check at DC 25 to know what the Orb of Kendar is. If you're trained in both, add +5 to whichever roll you make.

Aelgeirr let out a low whistle as he recalled what he knew of the Orb of Kendar. "I've kinda heard of the Orb. My sister mentioned it once. That's ....not good that it's gone."

Ambra had not slept at all last night and now groggily followed behind the rest of the party, the haunting memories of the previous evening being the only thing keeping her awake. She patiently listened to everyone talk until the Orb of Kendar was mentioned. It sounded like a magic item to her, but she wasn't sure exactly what it was so she sleepily asked the mayor. "What is the Orb of Kendar? You seem to hint that it has something to do with what happened last night."
