My orriginal idea was to just shack up to a level one mage and be his bodyguard,

Sure but they won't do anything beyond look fancy. Though, like any enterprising worth their guff you could make it so you have some tricks up your sleeve.
Edit: Oh like give you armor bonus. Yea just treat it like padded armor. >.>

Mostly its awesome to bluff about how your making money and you want to let this person in, but normally I am against it. Investors love fancy clothes.
