I've just watched "The mummy returns". And now I'm a bit curious. What do you guys think of those movies? Can the audience actually learn anything about egyptian mythology from them? (I'm quite mad right now because of "the evil god Anubis" thing...)

I admit, I adore that movie. Even though there are things factually wrong in it. *stabs the Rock-- er, I mean the Scorpion King* >.>;;;

I too love The Mummy films, though there are two aspects of it that annoy me: arrow Abubis/Yinepu is NOT evil arrow The Pyramids of Giza are not in Thebes
When I'm bored I watch both films one after the other whee

The Mummy films make me laugh. But I couldn't help but focus on the five canopic jars they mentioned in the first one. I kept on thinking that the fifth was going to be some big huge key to the plot, but when the movie ended I was left wondering, "But...but...what about the fifth jar?" confused Also the quicksand...in the middle of the desert. rofl
If people got interested in ancient Egypt because of movies like The Mummy, they should remember that what is in the movie is Hollywood's stylized and glamorous take on the subject. (It amazes me how they can portray the blast furnace known as the Sahara as dark and mysterious.)
It's gotten to where if my friends and I want to watch something scary on one of our sleepovers, we can't watch anything Egyptian-themed because I'll turn it into a comedy, pointing out all the errors I can. xd

I love that movie and there are some facts hidden in it, but you have to have some knowledge of Egypt or you won't be able to distinguish them. They are their though.

Thank you all ^^ I too love the humor in the movies, and i dare say i really like them! 3nodding I can understand that the films wouldn't have been so exciting if they strictly stick too the facts, but I think Hollywood should respect the reality just a little....

i've always watched the mummy and the mummy returns movie countless times. yeah, people can learn a few things from that.
i mean, some things aren't exactly accurate but most of them is pretty straight forward. like the book of the dead, which i thought was pretty darn spiffy, was one of the examples (although the egyptians never put them in a hard cover, black and gold book)
i heard there are books relating about rick's son. it's something about like Evelyn, Rick, and their son (totally forgot the name, sorry!) got back to cairo after escaping from the scorpion king's tomb. The son finds something in the nile and picks it up, totally unaware that it's something that belonged to one of the egyptian gods.
it also mentioned something about how anubis was angry that johnathan took the large diamond on top of the pyramid and he has sent someone to get it back and kill the person who took it on the way too.
pretty interesting, if you ask me

Heh, I'm a little skeptical about there being anything educational about the Mummy movies whatsoever... but I love them, all the same. heart I have all of them on DVD- the re-enactments of the glory of Egypt are beautiful, even when not very accurate. And I had no problem with Inpw's role in the movie, personally- I thought most of the characters deserved it. They were desecrating a tomb, after all- Imhotep had every right to go after them, and so did Inpw as guardian of the cemetary. Personally, I was cheering them on! wink
I was impressed at the beginning of The Scorpion King, when they actually attempted to have the actors speaking Middle Egyptian! That was above and beyond the call of duty, as far as I was concerned, and it was really cool to hear.^_^
I watched a classic mummy movie- a black and white one starring Boris Karloff as the Mummy. The only thing I remember was that they had a huge statue of Bast somewhere in the set, and they treated the arrival of a cat as an evil omen because Bast was "the goddess of evil sendings." I was like, YES!!! Finally someone is taking Bast seriously- none of this happy fluffy sex kitten stuff!!! She could really do some damage when she wanted to, and even the king had to be careful around her- I think there may have even been a brief period when she was demonized, much like Set. I saw a copy of someone's 42 Declarations which proclaims "I have not given succour to Bast," or something like that. I wish I could remember now where I read that...
Not that I think Bast really is evil, mind- she's one of my favorite deities. I was just happy to see a version which wasn't so sappy that it made my teeth stick together.
Anyway, I totally didn't notice the five canopic jars until you said that, Nevira... but of course, the fifth jar was for the tooth! blaugh

WebenBanu Anyway, I totally didn't notice the five canopic jars until you said that, Nevira... but of course, the fifth jar was for the tooth! blaugh rofl The Scorpion King was all right, I suppose...though I suspect the director had a lousy fight choreographer. xp Or the Rock just can't act...Whatshisname made me laugh though-the alchemist/demolitions buff whom I forgot the name of. The actor was the same guy that played Theoden in Lord of the Rings. Speaking of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, check out who showed up at the arena! My favorite Medjai and falcon heart

Hey, great avi! Definitely deserves a 10!
The choreographer of the Scorpion King did have to deal with The Rock- not exactly a lithe and nimble fighter, and he filmed most of the movie while severely sunstruck. wink Still, I guess they did well enough.

Yeah... I guess I shouldn't be too hard on the fight choreographer. I'm used to watching Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies...and various other crown jewels of fight choreography... sweatdrop
In spite of their shortcomings, when Hollywood does an Egyptian-themed movie, it can always be assumed it'll be big, bold, and beautiful. 3nodding And they always seem to have a big turnout of moviegoers, so there's good money in it too.

I love the two movies, however when I saw them depict Anubis as evil, it really annoyed me. However that's Hollywood for ya.
