Hiya all

I watched a program recently (about 2 hours ago) about the new tomb in the Valley of the Kings last February.

It seems very interesting, there is nothing on the walls and there are over 20 jars and 7 coffins. A tomb in this valley would only have 1 coffin (maybe 2) and the walls would be full of paintings of God's and the Pharaoh. They though it maybe a cash tomb, which means it's tomb with a collection of mummies, but they think it could be the tomb of Tutankhamun's wife.

What do you think about this tomb?

I believe that was the show I saw a few months ago. Though I thought it was longer than just February. Didn't it have someone's mother in there as well?

That's right, in February 2006.

Not sure, they didn't tell us who was in the two unsealed mummy cases, but they think it could be the relatives of Tutankhamun, and maybe his wife.

At one point people were speculating that Tiye, his mother, was buried in there.

But either way, I laugh at the people who said that there were no more discoveries to be made in the Valley of the Kings. razz

Oh, February 2006? I thought you meant 2007! Then, I think it was the same tomb. Yeah, I remember the two coffins that were mysteries. I wish I knew that was on again because then I would have taped it! Damn me and my mom for not setting up the stupid DVR yet! >.<

Nobody is buried in this tomb, it's an embalmer's cache. I'm writing my master's thesis about it and I've been following the dig since its discovery. It has similarities with the embalming cache of Tutankhamun (KV 53): they found natron, linen, pottery, seals, animal bones, etc. all that indicates that the material is embalming waste, left over after a royal embalming. The pottery and seals indicate that it has to be dated at the end of the 18th dynasty, so maybe these are the leftovers from the embalming of Eye, Horenheb ore someone else.

What I don't understand is that they buried these in the Valley of the Kings ... why not just discard them completely?

They did not only do that in the Valley of the Kings, but also in Sakkara (at the tomb of Pharaoh Horemheb bebore he became a pharaoh) an in the private tombs at Thebes. The Egyptians believed that you had to be whloe to cross over the the afterlife. So all the little pieces that culd be fallen of he body had to be swept up and hold close in the vicinity of the tomb.
I have seen caches with pieces of hair and nails. The brain that was extracted was probably kept in such caches. So they really needed this pieces to be a complete human in the Afterlife.
