There goes another retarded rant.
Okay, I know I'm not gonna say anything new here, but whatever. Me be annoyed, okay :C
I had some time to waste today, so I decided to read some fanfiction, mostly from FF.net. And to my terror, I had to encounter the MASSIVE AMOUNT OF MARY SUES.
My god. Is it just me, or wasn't there so many of them when I was more active on FF.net few years ago? Most of fanfics I see have at least one pairing including some OC, and LOTS of those OCs are simply Mary Sues.
I can't express how annoying it is when I'm reading some quite decent story and suddenly our dear author decides to throw in long lost sister/brother/daughter/son/mother/father/uncle/whatever of main character. Ofcourse this OC has to save the day/ruin the whole story.
What happened to good old FF.net? Where did the flood of dumb characters come from D: ? Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention to them earlier?
FF.net, you are disappointing me. Forgive, I was annoyed -.-'

I actually noticed that a lot of the fics that I read back in the "good old days" were Mary-Sue/self insertion, or just really badly written. So, no, the flood of Mary-Sue isn't new, you were probably just too young to notice, before.
I'm a little sad. I was hunting down some of my favorite ReBoot fics from my childhood, and only one of them was still appealing. And even that one was badly written, but it was funny and thus forgiven for it. One of the fics I couldn't even FIND anymore, but I've seen it used as an example of "bad fanfic writing", so I imagine that it was pretty bad.
I personally love original characters when they're done well, but those are really hard to find. I try to make my own OCs non-Sue, but it's very hard not to fall into the Mary-Sue trap.

That's why I never read any fanfiction with OCs in them-- it's impossible to slap an OC into a fanfiction without it being Mary Sue-ish. neutral

The Livejournal communities tend to be a little better, quality-wise. I never both going on ff.net anymore, I just got sick of the a)badly written fanfics, b)bad use of spellings/grammar and the c)plotless stuff. It's like having a hedgehog dragged across your brain. D:

There was a period where I denounced ffn.
But I got lazy and often use it for random fandoms or pairings. xd I've gotten into new fandoms because of ffn, and then search thru lj or other sources to get more after I have a basis. But actually, if you're into smaller fandoms that are less popular, there are usually less mary-sues and such because they tend to be done by people who know what they're doing. sweatdrop Won't get as much quantity, but there's a possibility for some quality(though, not saying that there can't be quality intermixed with all the crap of large fandoms. just have to look harder 3nodding ).

You dont know how much I agree with you. It really makes me want to go through my computer and punch the author really hard.
Oh whats even better!
When the author stops writing a story saying "I dont have time anymore blah blah blah" Then the next week they post up a different story.
--------- Harry Potter is getting really bad with OC's because JK fricken left the story with little kid characters... so basically every story is cliche and really fricken retarded.

Ack, don't even get me started on the FFN suethor population...I love fanfiction.net, but I get so ticked off when I look for a good romance stories and thousands of RandomhotcanonmalexSueishOCcharacter stories pop up. You can't even scan the newest stories list anymore without Sasuke's-sister-the-kyuubi-carrier-and-Hokage-at-age-11s popping up. Only very rarely can you find decently written OCs. There are some, they're just few and far between.

Now, I'll admit I write OCs but I don't think mine are MSs just because I don't make mine perfect. MSs give OCs bad names because of this. They have to be perfect in every single way.

SilverMaple Ever been on the deleterius community of lj? xd They deal with HP and LotR Mary-Sues! Deleterious is one thing, but what about Badfic_quotes? I love that comm so much. XDD And they make hilarious icons out of the worse quotes. But no, I haven't been to the Pit of Voles (fanfiction.net) in absolutely ages. As I said before, it just got too painful for me. Anyway, just reading the sporking of the fics from there hurts. It's hilarious, and just confirms to me why I steer clear of the site.

I use to write a LOT for Charmed, especially for Chris and Wyatt, my favorite charactors. but I swear, that show had more Mary Sue fics written for it then any other fandom, and this was BEFORE Maggot Neck came along. Seriously; after the show ended, EVERY writer and their dog decided C and W NEEDED to have an awesomness little sister who would, of course be as sarcastic and pretty as Chris, as strong as their mother, as wise as their father, and more powerful than Wyatt, who is, canonly, the single most powerful thing born, EVER>
And don't even get me started on Supernatural.
Blessedly, CLAMP works are OFC light.
