Okay.
So.
This is something I have recently become passionate about.
Heart Disease.

My mom was getting ready for work one day when I saw her wearing an unusual amount of red. I commented on it and she smiled and said "Today is 'Wear red for a heart day'" and i asked her what that was about. She said it was basically the pink ribbon thing people do for breast cancer, but this is for heart disease.

Did you know that twice as many women die from heart disease every year than breast cancer?

Not many people do.

So I've recently become passionate about this.

Why is it that breast cancer gets a ton of publicity and the majority of charity funds when 200% more women are dying every year from heart disease, something no one ever thinks about but is apparently 200% more deadly?

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying we should stop all the breast cancer research funding. Not at all. My grandmother died from brain cancer five years ago.

But at the same time, people need to be told the truth, that there are twice as many women who need our help and aren't getting it because other diseases are much more commercialized.

Anyway, i have a "challenge" of sorts.
I've decided to take a stand. I plan on starting a website, starting bake-sales and sending all of the profits to heart disease research, whatever I possibly can.
My challenge is for you to help me.

if you think this problem is too far away, to distant for you to recognize, imagine in 20 years that you or your girlfriend or mother or sister dies of heart disease.
If you can take a stand and help researchers by just donating money or whatever you can to them, we might be able to find a cure or even a vaccine to prevent it from happening to our children.

I'm very passionate about this.
Please please do help me.
While you're at it, send some money to breast cancer research, and AIDS research.

I want this thread to be not just about Heart disease, but anything you are passionate about helping. I wish there was a forum for this, but there isn't. So this thread will have to do for now.
but seriously. Share your passions, share ideas on how to help with the problems in the world.
someone will thank you for it. i guarentee it.

I'd like to see heart disease more publicized myself.
I have Pulmonary Valve Stenosis, mild case, but still. I would like it to be more well known about.

Well, there is a bit of a difference between heart disease and breast cancer, it seems like you're treating them as interchangeable maladies.

Heart disease is a general term for a great number of things, all of which are diseases in their own right. Breast cancer is also a bit of a category term, but whereas heart disease is divided up into several evenly spaced out conditions, ductal carcinoma makes up 60-90% of breast cancer cases, making it essentially much lower variation. This explains why heart disease is so much more deadly, it is several different diseases being compared to just one (possibly two).

Since heart disease is a blanket term, there will never be a "cure" or a "vaccine" for it, but rather treatment for the number of different kinds that fall under the term. Depending on the disease that you're talking about, there are treatments already available, or preventive measures that can be taken to lower one's risk. Breast cancer, on the other hand, has far fewer treatment and prevention options.

I hope I've made sense, but the bottom line is that it's not surprising that heart disease doesn't get as much press as breast cancer.

their is anouther thing to consider
doctors and drug pharamcys and drug producers get a certian ammount of money for helping to sate the effects of the disease they are supposed to be curing. if they made it so their is no disease, then they get no money. im shure they are working their hardest to get rid of the worst of the dieseases but still most people look out for numero uno

The only reason I think that hear disease is not as widely publicized as breast cancer is that the majority of heart related deaths and heart diseases can be prevented. There are those, like Pulmanary Stenosis ((Something that I myself suffer from)) that you are born with, and you really have no choice in the matter.

In the United States I think the mentality is that is you could have prevented it then you don't deserve attention, unhealthy habits don't sell papers. It's the heart wreathing stories of cancer coming out of nowhere and destroying families that the media plays on.

I'm not saying that is the right way to go around doing things, but I think that it's the reason that things are the way that they are i this country.
