I'm wondering if anyone has tried pen/e-mail friend websites to help improve language skills. If you have, what do you think about them, and would you recommend them for someone learning a foreign language? If you haven't, would you ever think about using one?

Yes!!
I think foreign penpals are essential in learning a foreign language. In studying you usually repeat phrases you learned and the same sentences over and over. With penpals, you're forced to make NEW sentences and you'll be forced to reach beyond your skill. It also forces you to practice as the emails keep coming and you need to reply to them within a week or so. Plus, who better to answer questions about a language than a native speaker?? And if you find someone learning your language, it's even better...
Good websites I've found for this:
www.penpalparty.com
www.apricotweb.com <--- check out their chat room to find a lot of Japanese who are learning english.
