I've been reading Watership Down lately, and I've noticed a few startling Redwall similarities...
1. One warren of rabbits has a wide patrol. o.O 2. El-ahrairah uses a trick to get cross a pike infested river similar to the one used by Mariel and Dandin to get the Swallow-thing. 3. The rabbits refer to hares as stupid, just like hares in Redwall think that rabbits are stupid. 4. The rabbits help a big bird with a wierd accent get better after hurting its wing.
I think Brian Jacques read this book before writing Redwall...
Also, check The Great Mouse Detective...
1. Crazy rat villian 2. British -ness (but some charaters have Scottish accents, too) 3. Anthropomorphisim! 4. Mouse protagonist (s) 5. Character named Basil (but Basil of Baker street is awesomer than Mr. Stag Hare) 6. Both have bats! And cats! 7. Both started as a book (I've never read the GMD book or seen the Redwall cartoon, but they are out there!)
Ummmm... disscuss!

Well, I've read Watership Down. Very good, but very very different from Redwall. First of all, it's really dark. And the animals.... are animals. They aren't anthropomorphized, and they have inescapable animal instincts.
Sure, there are similarities, but not enough for me to say Jacques copied off them. There are a lot of 'similar' novels out there, but Watership Down and Redwall just happen to be among the more popular, so they'd be paired together more. Admittedly, I only read Watership Down in middle school after I read a review that likened Redwall to it.

I'm not exactly saying that he coppied; I'm more wondering if it's an animal story archetype for rats to be bad, and so on (Notchu, Rasco and Darktan!).
And Leafpool? Read a bit closer... The wide patrol was what caught me.

Ray_Prower Interesting...(Note to self: Read Watership Down...) That book is INTENSE. I wouldn't recommend it if you're under 12 (even if I read it first when I was 9 sweatdrop ) Some parts can be kind of graphic... *shivers*

There are a lot of books out there with animals as the characters. But Watership Down actually takes place in Europe, while Redwall has its own made-up world. yes, there are similiarities, but no, i dont think that brian jacques got the idea from watership down.

I have found another book similiar to Redwall. Its called the Mistmante Chronicles, and its about a squirrel with a ledgendary sword. I havn't started yet, but theres even an abbey-type thing on the picture in the back....
