I wish we did. They are illegal in the state of California (along with Gerbils and ferrets).

Yes tis true! Some states and I think some provinces of Canada don't allow hedghogs for pets. It's also illigal to bring them here... they are originated from Africa I think (hense african pigmy) I hear there are many in England as well. This woman from there told me they are everywhere wild in the back yards. It's common for people in England to snatch the wild ones from their yards.. Not a good Idea!!! The woman I was talking to said she grabbed one for a pet, and it died young (poor thing think about the stress). She said her entire house was covered in mites from the hedgie and she had to move. I mean what if the hedghog was a mother, and if she were to take her away the babies would be left helpless. There are so many things wrong with thaking wild animals for pet's!! They do not do well if you take them from their natural envirnment. Unless maybe if it's sick or somthing and needs to be taken in. Otherwise it's just selfish! Anyways You can get them from pet stores(That's what I did) or from people who raise them. I thought to myself, there are many people who can not take proper care of hedghogs so I would take it into my own hands. He's alot of work but I love him!! Remember to research before even considering being an owner.

LonesLover where do you even FIND them? I've never seen them anywhere. The best route is to track down a breeder. Most pet stores won't carry them beause they're considered exotic and a special license is required to sell them. It's a hassle. I got mine from a breeder.

I agree a breeder is the best way to go! Often a breeder will have more information about the hedgehog. Information is important so you aren't getting a hedgehog that has an unhealthy past. Many deaths that effect hedgehogs are hereditary... So it's important to know their pasts. Aparently hedgehogs from breeders are more friendly then those you would find at a pet store. Unfortunately I could not find a breeder near me so I got mine from the pet store. Besides the cut I got him with he was completely healthy. It's too bad I couldn't find my baby at a breeder. He was put through too much stress at the pet store!
