It's weird going out as the first performance with only 30 peopel (that includes colorguard) and right after you is a band with 144 winds and 26 colorguard. Then, your band is the only band with a rating of 'good' and everyone else gets 'excellent'. Have any of you been in that situation?

I think ours is 28....not sure if that includes guard. It was really strange yesterday when we were placed in a division by school size instead of band size. We were in Division B which is bands I believe with 50+ musicians and around 20 on guard. Some have both plus ID!!!!

well the thing is that it's easier to pick out problems in a small band because there's less to look at.

I guess in a way the larger bands are cheating a bit

We have about... 40 people in our band, and about 10 guard. We always get compliments from judges that we make our band sound a lot bigger than it actually is.

... big bands are cheating sometimes... mad of many that i saw in one sitting, i had suspicions whether their forms were really anything much because it would be this blob of people that suddenly meshes into "straight" lines. it was just hard to watch because there were too many people to try and make sense of it.

supposedly we have a 60-piece band, but 10-20 of that is winterguard, 15 percussionists, so that leaves a 30-piece wind section and we have a problem with ineligibility and many give up and quit(losers...). *sigh*...

Where I compete, we have completely different divisions, made according the the band's numbers. We have like 130, but we don't compete with the ones who have like 50 members in prelims. We feel like we're a 30 member band going against a 100 member band though when competing against our closest rival....who have 230 people in their band...almost double us! gonk

Some of my favorite bands are the 50 and under member ones...they usually have the most creative shows and the best drum majors!

we have a 140/150 band including 40 colorguard. this may seem a lot bigger than yours but trust me I know how you feel when we come across bands that have... 300 band and maybe 50 guard?

man... i always wonder with a 300 piece band it has to suck at football games when you go off to concession breaks.

We have to space our selves out really far when we go to parades. One time a really big band with like a huge colorguard made fun of us because we have such a small band and no colorguard. Then we got first and now when ever we see them at a parade we hear no jokes about us.

Yeah, I know what that's like, our band isn't 30 or smaler, but we had 31 winds this year. Our problem is, though that we are dwindleing! in 2 years we will have litterally zero drumline and pit. so far this coming year we have one almost for sure guard member. And she's switching over from clarinet. This year we will have 2 bass drums, one snare, and maybe one quad if we're lucky and one of our percussionists doesn't have to transfer schools. I hate being small, except for the fact that I know everybody in the band well that way (except for one or two freshmen : ) )

My freshman year in high school, my band was 68 members including guard and DM. My senior year it had grow to 96 including guard and DM.
This past year, my high school band has 113 members including guard and DM. Next year they are going to have close to 140.
My university band had 30 members this year (My fist year..) and it has been difficult attending spectaculars with my band and seeing my former high school band in all of their amazing glory. It has been hard for me to adjust from a band of that size to something so significantly smaller. Hopefully though, we really do gain the 15 incoming freshmen that have been promised. I don't know anyone from my high school that will be joining though.
