I have a math tech class just around the corner... So I was wondering... What is the best graphing calculator out there? I need a new one anyways... the pixels are dying so I end up doing the division in my head anyway. Which isn't a problem for me, but my professors hate grading my work (only person that uses fractions excessively... blaugh ).

I am a mathematics major in the middle of my sophmore year. I was trying to stay calculator free, but the tests are getting longer and much more complicated.

It depends on what you're doing. I use my Ti-89 whenever I need to do algebra, as I can't do algebra for s**t either on paper or in my head. I also use it for arithmetic. I also use it to do derivatives and integrals for me, because those tend to involve a lot of algebra alongside the calculus.
If you're not going to use those capabilities, however, I'd go with the Ti-83. Much cheaper, but still very powerful. I used that for a long time and was very happy with it.

I loved my Ti-89. It got me through basic calculus and statistics. I don't like the Titanium version nearly as much, though, even if it is more capable. But for most people, a Ti-83 works absolutely fine.

However, don't become like Layra and me. Make sure you can still do the stuff in your head and on paper.

we werent' allowed to use calculators in first year, we had something like only three models we were allowed to use. So one in three had the same calculator, crazy.

I don't like calculators... I always put things in wrong, so it gets to the point where it is quicker to just do it with brain power and pencil and paper.

BUT when I get a calculator that rounds to the 8th place after the decimal not the 3rd when it is doing work... We have been having problems with that lately. The calculators that round too early when they work give us some problems. 3nodding We end up getting different numbers. (we as in half of us have old calculators and half have new calculators...)

If you are into stupid math jokes... Look in THE HANGOUT... I posted a math joke thread.

I am a huge Ti-89 fan, I could never get used to the RPN of an HP, I would just recomend the Ti-89, especially if you are going to keep going with mathmatics

Yeah, 89 is good if you aren't in High school (like, me). If you are in High School, or aren't allowed to solve polynomials and other related stuff on a calc, go with the 83, which is also a lot cheaper.

89 is a little more complicated too, so if it's implicity you are looking for, get the 83.

In all honesty it depends on what you are using it for.

If you are in college and are in calculus or higher...definitely use the TI-89 Titanium...it is a beautiful thing.

but, if you are in high school or going to be taking statistics then I would recommend the TI-84 Silver or TI-83 plus....(they are pretty much the same calculator).

Hope that helps smile I know that the last reply was two weeks ago but this intrigued me.

I don't think I am going to get a caculator... I am trying to save up money to go to the regional mathematics convention. Damn!

Oh yeah... Right now I am working with a TI Explorer Plus... For those who don't know... It was new in 95.

I really enjoy my TI 89 titanium, however, I find that some teachers are very wary of them in the intro math classes. So I recommend the TI-30X IIS it has two line entry so you can see what you entered and fix it when it's wrong, and at 10-15$ it's a nice backup. And that way when you let your none math major friends borrow it they don't freak out and mess up all your settings rofl

I never used a TI-89, but I did use a TI-83 and that one is very good.
Strange: nobody mentioned the TI-92. It doesn't cost that much more than a TI-83 and has a lot of possibilities. But the one I have, is almost 5 years old, so I don't know whether they still sell it.
