Who recruited you?: Lise (Uh… should I be more specific… there’s only one Lise here right?)

Name: Maxwell Hale
Age: 17
Gender: Straight male
Height: 5’7
Weight: 160 lbs.
Social Class: Noble

Race: Human

Appearance: The appearance of Maxwell alone should give the impression that he’s quite a mysterious person. He often wears a gray cotton trench coat, even on hot days if he feels like it. The heat doesn’t bother him much, if anything, it just helps to build up his mentality to it. When not wearing his trench coat, he may or may not substitute it for an opened navy blue vest made out of fine silk. Gray is the color of his usual collar shirt. A black tie wraps itself behind the collars of his shirt and comes down the center of his body stopping around the midpoint of his stomach. His trousers are black, as are his shoes. His shirt is tucked into his trousers and a belt with the color of night helps to keep his trousers in place. To top it all off is one clothing item that probably makes him shadier than anything else, and that item is a gray fedora hat with a black hatband wrapped around the crown of it. He usually tips down the hat a tiny bit in the same direction he’s facing to help conceal his eyes and to give off that shady feel. Underneath his fedora hat is dark brown hair with a perfect split in the middle. The split helps to keep his hair away from his forehead and eyes although his hair on the right side tends to go down his forehead somewhat. His gray eyes, for those who’ve actually seen them up close, seem to be always looking for something—not necessarily for trouble, but for something out of curiosity. His brown eyebrows are usually leveled. They usually stay that way even when he’s in a really good mood, in which it’s easier to tell when he smirks. However, if he’s in a really bad mood, his eyebrows will noticeably angle slightly downward. He doesn’t smile much, but he can certainly smirk when he wants to, and that may well be either a good thing or a bad thing. He’s slightly built and has a somewhat slight tan, which wouldn’t be so hard to tell if he didn’t wear as much clothing.

Personality: Despite his shady appearance, Maxwell is actually an okay person provided that one can actually muster the guts to acquaint with him in the first place. He doesn’t care if he intimidates you as he sees it as your problem and not his. He is apathetic about making friends. Put it this way, if you somehow manage to be friends with him, then okay, but otherwise he couldn’t care less. Even if he’s a friend of yours though, he prefers privacy to himself more than half the time. He usually has a calm nature, which he developed over time by not caring about most things unless they affected him personally. Be careful though if he’s somehow having a bad day or is in a bad mood because he tends to get easily irritated in those cases. Regardless of his mood though, he can be quite a smart aleck when he wants to be, which may or may not be amusing to some people. He believes in an eye for an eye, so if you were to yell at him first, then he’ll probably yell right back at you. He usually waits to be spoken to rather than being the one to start a conversation.

Character flaws: Friends are hard to come by for Maxwell because he doesn’t actively pursue them, and he may be too intimidating to associate with in the first place. Even if he were your friend, he’d rather want his privacy more than half the time. He doesn’t trust people easily, and his trust takes a while to be earned. When he’s having a bad day or not in a good mood, he can get irritated quite easily. His eye for an eye way policy may make a situation worse rather than help it. His lack of concern over most things that don’t affect him personally may make some people view him as either uncaring or selfish.

Background: The Hale family is actually one of several noble crime families. This sounds like a funny paradox of some sort, but it’s true nonetheless. The family is currently in its second generation of organized crime activity. The first generation of the Hale noble crime family was actually part of another noble crime family, but Maxwell’s grandfather splintered away from them after disagreeing with their unnecessary extreme methods. Maxwell’s grandfather, being a successful businessman, was more interested in the economics as opposed to the violence of organized crime, so he gradually established the Hale crime family as it is today. The Hale crime family’s specialty with economics has quickly made them one of the most powerful crime families in existence. Despite their power, however, they’re conservative and tame about using force unlike certain other crime families. Make no mistake about it, they do have their significant share of gangsters, bodyguards, and the like, but they are usually limited to security and self-defense roles of the family’s investments and estates. Every crime family needs to arm themselves should a gang war ever break out. They are one of the very few crime families to swear the so-called “Our Thing” pact. “Our Thing” means no killing, harming, or threatening of innocents and authorities. Besides the alliances that the pact forms with the participating crime families, it also further conceals their criminal activities.

Like every crime family, especially a noble one, they must have a front—a cover to conceal themselves. Maxwell’s father is the owner of a successful merchant company, which alone, gives an enormous amount of cover for the family’s organized crime operations. His father virtually has complete control over trade and shipping for his company, so that alone provides more than enough protection from the law. He has been godfather of the Hale crime family ever since Maxwell’s grandfather went straight a little over two decades ago. That is to say, Grandfather Hale passed down the criminal empire to his son and effectively retired from organized crime.

Maxwell’s mother knows full well of the family’s criminal empire, but still cares for her family despite that fact. She was from an ordinary noble family. Her family owns a stadium where horse racing and other sporting events take place. The stadium is largely free from gangland activities, but the Hale family has made some money from the gambling that takes place during the horse races. Maxwell’s mother does not yet really own any part of the stadium seeing as her parents still own it. However, she does own a restaurant which unsurprisingly also serves as a front.

Maxwell is the eldest of three siblings and will inherit the Hale criminal empire in the future. He grew up in a coastal city with all the benefits that his family could possibly provide. His family’s luxurious house was located on the plains of the city’s outskirts where it was much less noisy and much more peaceful. During his early education days, Maxwell developed a fondness for history and some of the arts. Maxwell is the one to approach if you ever want an intellectual conversation about history. When he was young, bodyguards assigned personally by his father would watch him from the distance. The fact that he was the son of the current godfather and heir of the Hale criminal empire meant that he was a potential target for rival gangs. As he got older, he understood gangland better. Realizing how important he was to the family, he watched himself better. He became less trustworthy of strangers. Prizefighters taught him some fighting moves whenever he asked because there might be a time when he would need to defend himself. If you shoved him, he would shove you back giving you an eye for an eye. By remaining calm and private he would not attract too much attention. Upon reaching college age, he wanted to contribute to the Hale family in some way. After much thinking, he decided to go to The University. It would be a similar environment to the coastal city he grew up in. Growing up in a coastal city meant that he encountered many different types of people there such as peasants, nobles, people from different cultures, and so on. Perhaps it was also a chance to scout for talent or anyone or anything of use for the Hale family.

Skills: Maxwell’s cover skills are to make anything of use that will help the criminal operations of the Hale family. His skills aren’t much, which usually results in him working on very simple things like containers that can help the family’s smuggling operations. While they don’t look impressive, they do serve their purposes very well. They are cheap, simple, and can be mass-produced for black market use. His real mission is to scout for talent or anyone or anything of use for the Hale family. Maybe that explains why his eyes wander around so much.

Belongings: He has his own set of clothes, of course. A pocket watch is usually kept in the pocket of his trench coat. Simple tools for the simple things that he makes. A couple of pens, pencils, and books. One of the books is about historical battles. He has a rosary for good luck. Incase someone is actually foolish enough to attack him, he has a mahogany staff ready which one of the prizefighters taught him how to use. He also has money stored in a safe box.

Character secrets: The Hale family has an agent who walks around the roads outside of The University looking for rival gang members that are looking to cause trouble with Maxwell. Maxwell knows that rival gangs may be after him even though he’s in The University.

Anything else? I got the last name Hale from Nathan Hale who was the first American spy to be executed during the American Revolution.

Who recruited you?: I saw a topic in the Registered Guilds section.

Name: Morgan Edward Karr
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 135

Race: English
Social Class: Noble

Appearance: Standing fairly tall and thin, Morgan Karr is a handsome figure whose age is such that his appearance is just beginning to reflect manhood. The last vestiges of baby fat in his face have disappeared, leaving a lithe and thin head topped with long, black hair. This hair, reaching down to his shoulders, is worn back in a ponytail and held in place by a thin ribbon. With his intense dark blue eyes and boyish face, with a tall forehead and set jaw, Morgan is often described as "quite handsome." Though thin, casual soccer and hunting, traditional pastimes of his family and social class, have left him with a wiry frame. His shoulders are thin and his frame slightly feminine, hiding his strength from most. His clothes are refined but modern; his father has vowed to move the wealthy Karr family into modern times. As such, Morgan usually wears a fitted frock coat, a waistcoat, a shirt of either linen or cotton, a necktie, trousers, and square-toed shoes. Colours range, but Morgan himself prefers lighter tans for casual wear, while darker colours for formal and evening wear. He tends to avoid hats, but has allowed himself to be forced into a driving cap when outside on several occasions. In all honesty, he enjoys wearing the driving cap, but is worried that it would clash with his refined attire.

Personality and Character Flaws: Raised and bred to inherit the family name, young Morgan is very outgoing. He easily makes friends, using both the influence behind his social position and his strength of character to influence others. Confident and self assured, he tries to influence events around him and control his own life. However, Morgan does have a way of being too controlling, and will often get annoyed and angry if he doesn't get what he wants. He also tends to rely heavily on his family name, which can make him come off as a bit of a prat. Still, he is very skilled at making new friends and tries his best to be open to all people, regardless of social class. He enjoys listening to others, and, though a good conversationalist, is good at speaking without actually revealing things about himself. Because of this, he keeps secrets very well and tends to be rather distrustful of others when they begin to pointedly ask personal questions. As a young noble, there's really no reason for this beyond paranoia at sullying his family name.

Background: For much of his life, Morgan was raised at home and taught by private tutors. Intelligent and determined, he did well in his classes and excelled in social situations, often entertaining guests when his parents were forced to step out. Most of his childhood was spent at his family's estate in Lancashire, a property which had been in his family since the Battle of Hastings in 1066. At fifteen, he grew tired and bored of life at home. Turning to his parents, he demanded that he be sent to a school outside of their estate, and he left home for the university at sixteen. Morgan's father is a rich banker and has considerable influence in politics. He regularly attends House of Lords meetings in London, causing him to be away from home quite a bit. This fact made Morgan resent his father growing up. However, the young heir to the Karr name still respects his family and goes to great lengths to make them look good. Morgan's mother was a runaway from another influential English family. When she was a teen, she joined the circus and became known as the "Most Beautiful Girl in England." Seeing her at a show, Morgan's father fell deeply in love with her and the two married when he found out her heritage. As for the Karr family, they are a distinguished family of Scottish descent. In 1066, they received a large parcel of land in Lancashire in return for their services during the Battle of Hastings. Personal favorites of Duke William of Normandy at the time, they quickly grew wealthy and influential.

Skills: Morgan is very skilled at manipulating people to get what he wants. He speaks very well and is incredibly confident, and he excels in his classes. He is a decent soccer player, but is better known simply as being charming and sophisticated. He is also interested in machinery, though this passion is restricted to a hobby due to Mr. Karr, who believes that invention is for the middle class.

Belongings: From home, Morgan brought his own sets of formal and casual clothing. He also brought several books to read in his spare time, some tools for mechanical invention, and other general school supplies such as paper and pens. On his person, he carries his family signet ring, which bears the Karr coat of arms - a red flag with a white, upside-down V containing three red stars underneath a knight's helmet. On the band of the right is engraved his family motto, "Sero sed serio," meaning "Late, but in earnest." He also brought with him a hunting knife with a fine iron blade and an ivory handle, an heirloom passed down from the Battle of Hastings.

Character secrets: Morgan is attracted to boys, though he dares not tell anyone for fear of discrediting his family name. He is also terribly afraid of snakes, and tends to avoid classes that teach about them.

Anything else?: Karr is a real last name, originating in Scotland. The family was first seen in Lancashire on lands given to them by Duke William of Normandy after they aided him in the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Karr family is actually a very distinguished Scottish surname. (I'm also related to them on my mother's side)

The room was fairly quiet. After all, it was empty save for one occupant. It looked like a compare-and-contrast; half of the room looked occupied and livable, while the other half was still empty of personal possessions. One bookshelf held various books on science, culture, and politics, in addition to the standard schoolbooks and fiction. The other sat empty, wooden shelves looking rather neglected. One desk was decorated with pens, pencils, notestock, a mailing kit, and a stamp with some wax. The other desk was empty of such items, and sat nearby its counterpart providing a stark contrast that caught the eye. The centerpoint of the room, however, was currently on the bed. On it, a boy lay on his pack, cotton shirt untucked, necktie loose, and shoes resting neatly on the floor beside him. At the end of the bed, a tan waistcoat and frock coat were folded neatly. The boy himself was fairly tall; his long black hair was splashed across the pillow underneath him, recently untied from its normally neat ponytail. Over a bedpost, a driving cap rested snugly on its nook, looking as though it had been placed there because that was the most out-of-the-way point in the room for such an object.

The boy, whose name was Morgan Edward Karr, held in front of his face a small leatherbound book; cover was plain and announced in large letters, "On the Origin of Species" with a smaller subtext reading, "By Means of Natural Selection." Several weeks ago, Karr had picked up the book and packed it in his things, vowing to read it on the way to school. It was apparently quite interesting and controversial, and was the subject of much smalltalk. Thus, the young Master Karr felt obligated to read such a text and familiarize himself with the contents. And so he read, blue eyes scanning from line to line, his face holding an expression of extreme concentration and slight amusement. He enjoyed these scientific texts, though he didn't share this fact with many. From a glance at his shelves, though, it was fairly apparent; they held various similar texts, in addition to several scientific stories. This was Morgan Karr, and he had arrived in school earlier that day. With his things unpacked, he awaited the arrival of his room mate and contented himself with reading in the meantime.

The door swung open and a huge man wearing a dark trench coat stepped in while hoisting a chest over his right shoulder. The fedora hat he was wearing shadowed his face. He glanced around the room.

“Just place it wherever there’s space,” ordered a young man’s voice from outside the door.

The huge man lumbered over to the portion of the room that was empty and placed the chest down near the empty desk there. Thud!

“Let’s do this gently please,” said the voice once again from outside the door.

“Y-yes, Boss,” the huge man replied as he exited the room.

“All right boys. Let’s keep it coming,” the voice commanded with several voices replying to him.

“Of course, Boss.”

“Sure thing, Boss.”

“Right, Boss!”

Several more mysterious men walked into the room carrying a luggage of some sort. They were all placed in the empty portion of the room, which would no longer be empty by the time everything was in place. The parade of gangsters from the Hale crime family lasted for several minutes. They all wore fedora hats, which kept their faces from being seen. By the time they were done, the part of the room that was once empty was now filled with luggages.

There was some murmuring outside the door for a minute or two followed by silence. That’s when Maxwell Hale, the heir to the Hale criminal empire, finally stepped into the room. Most of his body was covered by the gray trench coat that he was wearing, and his downward tipped fedora hat shadowed his face. It took several hours for him and his associates to reach the University because they traveled all the way from the coastal city that he lived in. He threw some quick glances around the room. He noticed that the other part of the room had a significant amount of items—either his roommate was an upper middle class or a noble he thought. He threw a quick glance at the one who was resting and reading on his own bed and he seemed… quite skinny and frail. No, the Hale family cannot use such people as bodyguards. Hopefully, this one has some useful talents or abilities that the family could use later, but he definitely didn’t look like the type to handle physical work. He would just have to wait and see. For now though, he simply started to unpack his stuff.

As the procession of men paraded in and out of the room, Karr sat up and watched with mild interest, his black hair now falling over his shoulders. He raised an eyebrow at the mysterious voice, the tone of authority indicating someone in command of wealth and respect - upper class for sure. With a light sigh, the boy dog-eared a corner of the page he was reading, closed the book, and placed it at the end of the bed. Then, pulling himself into a sitting position, he pushed his shoes on and stood.

By this time, another had entered the room, and the goons had left. This was the mysterious voice - dark brown hair falling to the right and piercing grey eyes partially obscured by a fedora. Interseting attire for a young gentleman, but forgivable considering the quality of the clothes and commanding air that the boy held.

For a moment, Morgan looked down at the various boxes now covering the other side of the room. Definatly upper class with this many things. Still, Karr didn't recognize him. The boy wasn't a member of any of the many noble families that the Karr family had entertained at their Lancashire estate over the years. This made the new roommate even more interesting; here, Morgan had the oppertunity to expand the Karr family's rather large web of contacts throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland. Good luck, indeed. Tucking one hand lightly into his pocket and glancing up at the boy, Morgan allowed himself a dignified smile, taking a moment to assess the other before speaking.

"Hullo; you must be my new roommate," he began, extending a hand in a friendly manner, "I'm Morgan Karr, from Lancashire. Pleased to meet you."

Maxwell had just barely begun to unpack when he heard a voice from the other side of the room. He paused for a moment as if giving a hint of amusement. Karr, huh? It wasn’t a last name that he was familiar with. This was probably a good thing though as half of the last names he was familiar with were the last names of organized crime families… noble or not. At least he didn’t have to worry about being roomed with a family member of a rival gang. That wouldn’t have been the best thing in the world.

It was amusing how this quite frail-looking figure extended a greeting to him in a friendly tone of voice and manner. At least he has guts. With that thought in mind, he turned his head to his roommate. Ah, his hand was stuck out waiting for a handshake. Most, if not all, nobles involved within organized crime knew how to display the proper gentleman behavior of the time, and Maxwell was no different when it came to using gentleman behavior when necessary. Hey, it's good for business, right?

“Nice to meet you Morgan Karr,” Maxwell said in a normal tone of voice as he shook his hand. “I’m Maxwell Hale and I come from the coast.”
