I'm not a HUGE fan of this show, but I got stuck watching it Thursday night on VH1. They were surprised with a trip to Japan. One of the challenges dealt with Japanese Street Fashion. They had to run around Tokyo and create there own Japanese Street Style outfit in hopes of inspiring the fashion designers of MILK. I'm not going to explain the whole episode so I better give you this link:

I have to admit, seeing rail skinny want to be models run around Tokyo trying to look Lolita kind of insulted me. But I did also find it funny for that same reason. They made fun of the example models at the beginning of the challenge. They said the model's headdress made her look like "Mr. Potato Head." I was upset by there lack of inspiration and effort as well.

I did get to see inside a Metamorphoze shop though. I honestly think Ann should have won the challenge, because her outfit was the cutest.

So this made me wonder, what are your thoughts? Have you seen this episode.

This is really old news, however what can you say? These people have no appreciation for foreign cultures, and think it is cool to dress like a whore. Are you really going to be offended by what they think of Lolita?

True this is old, but then again, I barely ever watch TV. I wasn't too offended. I just thought it was funny. Plus it was nice to see Lolita's on American TV.

There was a post about it a while back. I'd like to see the episode. I don't think much of the show though. Seems a bit pointless to me, as I watched it for a bit back in November, I think.

Edit - I searched for it on YouTube, and someone has taken up the job of posting every single episode, but, wouldn't you know it, the one they miss is the Harajuku one. mad

I try to catch the show because i want to get a good head start in hte fashion world.

But while watching the show--i was a little insulted. They all looked more "harajuku" than Lolita to me. And it made me angry that i threw the head dress at the tv.

It was more annoying though, because it was almost like seeing the American Lolita's dreams be made a mockery.

I saw the episode, and squeeled when they all went into the shops. I thought the other girl should have won the challenge. Not the one who just picked out random things, I thought that was a total insult to the culture! gonk I cried that night.

I honestly did not see that episode at all. I kind of like the show just cuz I am a huge fashion whore my self. But The girls do not seem every excepting of other cultures fashion style espically ones that embrace street fashion so very much such as Japan. I think it would have been interesting but every amusing to see these girls try and pull off looking like a lolita espially since half the time when girls like us who actually know a crap about the fahshion go into it buying a nice designer dress of the style or making one that looks great. But then get bad mouthed by creeps on the street saying we need to not dress like dolls. I would farrr rather dress like a doll then a hoe on the street like your culture aparently thinks is ok to do nowadays.

Hahaha!
That's actually my favorite tv show.
XDDD;

And I'm sure that's how most Americans would react to the Lolita style.
It's something they're not familiar with.
So, it's understandable.
But it was so horrible to listen to them butcher the Japanese language.

And not all of them were "rail thin".
All the same, there should be height restrictions when wearing Lolita outfits.

I'm sort of indifferent... I wish I could have seen it... but I don't think that they have the real love of the style, like we here do... but it was nice that it was shown in America...
Kinda makes me wish that there were a couple Loli stores in the US, but am glad there are not, because everyone would be disrespectful of it...
(thinks of how goth and gothic are often seen as the same thing and/or are often associated with punk and freak.....)

That is a little terrifying. D:

I'm a big fat b***h and I don't at all appreciate seeing Lolita in mainstream media as some dreadful fad. ;( So, I can't say I am happy that this episode aired... but maybe it will make people stop asking me if I am in a play all the time if they know that I dress the way I do as a fashion, not a costume. XD

I don't think anyone here should feel insulted. No one on that show tried to look "Lolita" they just had to put together a creative Japanese-inspired outfit.
It just so happened that Lolita was mixed in there a little as well. I don't know anyone who saw that episode and got the wrong idea about lolita.

Even in that article, Lolita is mentioned only once.

The Japan trip was my favorite part of that show, personally. While I agree, most girls didn't appreciate the culture they were learning about, I still enjoyed watching it.
