Overview

This Daeva bloodline is a nomadic cult of carnival freaks. They have access to the unique Discipline The Show.

Appearance

Physical appearance may vary, but they are always deformed or mutated in some way. Their appearance prior to joining the Bloodline is irrelevant, their appearance had been irreversibly changed into something inhuman. Each change is unique, and there is no factor to determine what kind of change someone will get. Some Freak were changed so much that they become disabled.

The Daeva are a Kindred clan known for being emotional, sensual, and desirable. Predatory hedonists and sensualists, the Daeva are emotionally dying, hollow inside. They are slaves to their chosen vices. Daeva are masters of Majesty, the Discipline of seduction and persuasion. Daeva are often called Succubi. [1]

Daeva are very diverse as a clan - the only common thread is their consuming passions. Fierce brawlers and social butterflies are found there, as well as everything in between.

Although Daeva are often dismissed as effete, they possess the Disciplines of Vigor and Celerity, thus making them extremely capable in a fight. This, combined with their mercurial tempers and excitable natures make them Kindred with which to tread lightly.

Daeva are most common in the Invictus or Lancea et Sanctum, as the former often provides the luxuries that most of them become accustomed to. Daeva who belong to the Lancea Sanctum are often the Covenant's most impassioned firebrands and crusaders. However, there is no Covenant without Daeva members, reflecting their versatile membership - a Succubus can turn their passion to almost any cause.

Daeva are found at all strata of a city's Court. This again is a side effect of their social natures and martial capabilities. Often they prefer to take up positions that allow them to indulge their vices - Succubus Harpies, Keepers of Elysium and Sheriffs are common.

The clan loves to surround themselves with mortals - to Daeva they are the pretty accessories, the running buffets and punch-bags that they exercise their tastes on. More importantly they serve as a mirror for the joys that, as vampires, the Daeva have lost.

The Beast

The Daeva’s Embrace is inevitably sexual, but also fetishized. They objectify everything, but especially themselves. They Embrace to perpetuate that passion. The Daeva Beast is a beautiful angel, and it comes and takes control, leaving the Man to watch as mute dissociated witness. Their sinew grace leaves mortals breathless and willing to offer their own throats to the predator among them. The experience of the Daeva Kiss is orgasmic, a feeling of all-encompassing pleasure that grips them in silent adoration.

History

The progenitor of the Bloodline, Anulka, was a Slovak girl born in 1742 with both of her legs fused together. Her mother rejected her, and she was placed in an church-run orphanage. As she experienced her first menses, she was expelled from the orphanage and sold to a local businessman, who acted as a middleman to Josef Gensch.

Josef Gensch ran a circus that travelled throughout Europe, Anulka was placed in the circus as a freakshow attraction. Josef also lusted for Anulka, and as he forced himself upon her, he attracted the attention of Hagal, a Kindred who drained Josef dry and Embraced Anulka. Taking over the carnival, Hagal and Anulka enslaved members of the circus and it continued as if nothing happened, but now the spectators also paid in blood, which satisfy the owner's undead urges. When the circus returned to Prague, the owners, who put Josef in-charge, tried to reassert control but failed.

For three decades the circus travelled, but they drew the attention of influential Kindred, concerned of the midnight vampire shows threatening the masquerade. In a performance in the outskirts of Strasbourg, the audience included Kindred. As word reached the king of the performers using their Kindred powers in their performance, he was enraged and ordered the owners to be captured. Hagal was captured, tried and executed. Meanwhile, Anulka managed to escape with the help of her retainers. What remained of the circus was destroyed. Anulka retreated back to Slovakia, and started a smaller, more discreet carnival. She created her own brood of Childer, which began to mutate and gain freakish appearances.

By the mid-19th century, the Carnival had more than two dozen members, with many more Carnival groups spinning out of the original. However, the Carnival remained a secretive and limited lineage. As the Carnival started to be prosecuted in Europe, some migrated to the United States and signed up with the local circuses.

By the 1800s, large circuses waned in popularity, in favor of carnivals and sideshows. The Kindred in America were far more accepting, and the wide-open country allowed them to operate largely unopposed.

In the modern day, the Carnival remained a mostly closed society. The majority are concentrated in North America, where the Bloodline had over three dozen members. There are still small families in Europe and in the Mediterranean. There are rumors of a group in the Far East, but they are unsubstantiated.

Discipline

The Show is a unique Discipline possessed by members of the Kindred bloodline known as the Carnival. Already deformed, the appropriately nicknamed Freaks use this Discipline to become even more bizarre, putting on a Show which both captivates and revolts an audience.
-Geek Trick - the Kindred may perform any self-injuring sideshow trick - eating a lightbulb, hammering a nail into one's face - without feeling any pain. (Any injuries are still real.)
-Contortion - the Freak contorts their body in a way impossible for most humans - bending the waist or knees backwards, turning the head 180 degrees etc.
-Spider Crawl - hook-like hairs grow on the Freak's palms and feet, allowing her to walk on walls like a spider.
-Rubber Skin - compresses or stretches the Freak's body like rubber, fitting into impossibly small spaces or increasing in length.
-Siamese Twin - fuses part of the Freak's flesh with either another part of his own body, or that of another Kindred - sharing thoughts and Disciplines in the latter case.

Celerity is the Discipline that endows Kindred with superhuman speed. Tales and legends of vampires ascribe to them supernatural speed, the ability to move faster than the eye can see, and even to appear in two places at once as if teleporting. While some of those accounts are exaggerated, Kindred with the Discipline of Celerity can indeed move far faster than any mortal. They appear to blur into nothingness, all others moving as if in slow motion in comparison.

Vigor is the Discipline that endows Kindred with the "epic strength of many men." The Discipline of Vigor is among the most well-known and basic of vampiric abilities that are known to be possessed by the Kindred; making them several times stronger than the most physically strong human. It is among the most dangerous of Disciplines as the preternatural strength it affords allows vampires to perform feats of strength that deform environments and cause significant injures to humans with ease; physical confrontations between Kindred learned in the Discipline of Vigor can be terrifying and dangerous spectacles to behold, resulting in intense injuries that would kill a man instantaneously as well as considerable property damage.

Majesty is the Kindred Discipline of preternatural charisma and charm. Its applications allow the practitioner to impose willing submission, to elicit the confessions of dark secrets and more. Majesty is the signature Discipline of clan Daeva. The powers of Majesty are Awe, Revelation, Entracement, Summoning, and Sovereignty.
-Awe - Awe magnifies the vampire’s presence in the eyes of others, making her seem cool, hot, and in general the kind of person with her very own spotlight.
-Confidant - When the vampire speaks, she creates an air of trust and reliability. The victim gains the Charmed Condition.
-Green Eyes - The victim feels deep jealousy over the vampire’s attention and desperation for her favor.
-Loyalty - The vampire becomes so important to the victim that acting against the vampire becomes traumatic. The victim gains the Enthralled Condition.
-Idol - The vampire takes on the mantle of the king or the star, becoming so important in the eyes of others that they cannot possibly act against her.

Weakness

Every Freak suffer a deformity, making them standout amongst the rest of the Daeva Clan. Their bodies are twisted in a way that disgusts onlookers. Those that choose a freakier mien gain the weakness of the Nosferatu (VTR) Clan, while those who choose a physical handicap Speed is reduced to one-quarter of its standard value rounded down after any adjustments are made. Storytellers should work with players to devise appearances that both serve the interests of the players and, at the same time, fittingly impair the characters to a degree justified by the mechanics of the weaknesses. Note that a Freak cannot possess the Crippled or Deformity Flaws.
