SHIORI MORITHE GREYOF THE BLACK-POWDER CLAN

A seemingly straightforward task lay before Shiori and her squad: find a lost dog somewhere beyond the walls of Konohagakure. A mission undertaken by countless generations of genin, yet in the hands of this particular squad, a simple assignment turned into a bewildering escapade that defied even the wildest imaginations.

The pursuit of the wayward canine led them deep into the heart of the woods encircling the village, navigating through the thick, chilling fog that shrouded the landscape. Rain pelted down, contributing to the gloomy atmosphere that clung to the surroundings. The muddy terrain beneath their feet squelched with every step, creating an unstable foundation for their journey.

In her characteristic confidence, Shiori paid noattention to her immediate surroundings as she ventured perilously close to a fog-obscured cliffside. The ground beneath her gave way, crumbling with the weight of her misstep, and she found herself hurtling toward the unknown depths below. Fortunately, Ayame, her squadmate, leaped forward in a valiant attempt to rescue her. However, the treacherous combination of unstable ground and added weight thwarted any hopes of salvation, resulting in both young ninja plummeting to the cold, wet ground beneath.

Now drenched and isolated from the rest of their team, Shiori and Ayame are left with only each other and their training as they confront the challenges of survival in this unforgiving wilderness.

---------------------------------------

Shiori emitted a low, resonant groan as she gingerly rose from the muddy ground, her limbs protesting with aches that reverberated from her head down to her toes. Every inch of her body seemed to pulsate with discomfort. Wet mats of hair clung stubbornly to her, and her clothes, now thoroughly soaked, adhered uncomfortably to her form. Despite the undeniable physical distress, the relief of being alive overshadowed her immediate discomfort. However, as the question lingered in the air, a more pressing concern dawned upon Shiori: the fate of Ayame.

Her foggy gaze surveyed the immediate surroundings, a task made challenging by both blurred vision and the stubborn mud refusing to relinquish its hold on her eyes. Shiori's eyes darted anxiously, scanning for any sign of her squadmate, but the landscape seemed to conceal Ayame's presence. The silent woods offered no immediate answers. In a moment of frustration and urgency, Shiori resorted to a more direct approach, her voice cutting through the stillness of the forest.

"Hey! Are you still alive over there?" she called out, her voice a blend of concern and the unmistakable edge of urgency.

Why did Isshin-sensei have to pair Ayame with her of all people? Ayame’s eyes would occasionally dart to look at Shiori disdainfully, instead of looking for their canine target every moment. It wasn’t news that the two of them didn’t see eye to eye, so when the group split up to cover more ground, the Uchiha was surprised that the two rivals were made into a pair. Even more surprising, however, was that the two had managed to go this long without bickering-hell, they hadn’t even said a word to each other.

In the hours of silent searching, Ayame pondered if she should say something- anything- to try and lighten the tension between them. Ther were squadmates, after all, as much as the Genin was loathe to admit it. They should at least be cordial… right? However, whenever she opened her mouth to say something, words were caught in her throat, halted by her internalized frustration with the Aashi ninja. Shioi was arrogant, loud, crass, and bullheaded. All traits that made Ayame’s blood boil, especially since they seemed to always be directed in her direction. So whenever Ayame tried to find common ground to create smalltalk, all she could think about were moments that just made her clench her fists in frustration.

Which played its part into the third surprise of the evening. As the two genin wandeed deeper into the dense fog, neither were paying attention enough to their surroundings. It wasn’t until the unmistakable crack of breaking earth shattered the silence that the two children realized what happened. “Shiori!” Ayame called out, jumping forward without thinking to catch the oni. But it was far too late as the ground began to crumble away into nothingness. Ayame, who was too fully committed to the catch, continued her plan of not thinking and jumped down with Shiori. She wrapped her arms around the girl in a desperate attempt to do something, anything, to mitigate the fall. It was soon after that that Ayame felt a sharp crack against her skull and her world went dark.

Some time later, a noise cut through the darkness. “...till alive over there?!” It sounded muffled, as if the Uchiha was underwater. The volume made her already aching head throb with pain. “...yelling…” Ayame managed to mumble, her voice coming out as little more than a dry rasp. If pressed, Ayame would sit upright and repeat with “Stop yelling!” Immediately followed by a hiss of air through grit teeth as more pain shot through her head. The Genin’s eyes squeezed shut as she held her head in her hand.

Ayame let out a slow breath through clenched teeth as she opened her eyes, blinking a few times to get rid of the blurriness. “Where are we…?” She managed to mumble. As Shiori answered (or not) the red haired girl looked around, her hand reaching back for a scroll. It took a moment of groping at emptiness for Ayame’s heart to freeze in a panic. Her blood went cold as she looked around more frantically, with more purpose. There!

Ayame scrambled to her feet and ran, her solid steps quickly giving way to soft splashing in the nearby river. Ayame froze at what she saw: two travel packs, surrounded by their now floating contents. Soaked through rations, soggy scrolls with ink leaking from them and into the water… Ayame grabbed one scroll and opened it up, confirming that the seals inside were completely ruined. Dejected, she plopped down on the riverbank and let the cool water rush by her. “Now what…?” she muttered.

SHIORI MORITHE GREYOF THE BLACK-POWDER CLAN

Shiori let out a small sigh of relief as she heard Ayame’s voice. She hobbled over, chuckling a bit when she saw her partner splashing around in the river, trying—and failing—to grab their gear. "Nice one, Red," she mocked. But then the reality of their situation hit her like a ton of bricks. Watching their supplies float away, she couldn’t help but feel a knot of worry tighten in her gut. Surviving out here would’ve been a breeze if they had their stuff, but now? They were stuck with nothing but their barely-there skills, and that was far from ideal.

Shiori quickly pulled herself together—no need to let Ayame know she was freaking out. They had to stay level-headed if they were going to get through this. The sky started to sprinkle, the soft tapping of rain on the leaves above them offering some cover, but it wouldn’t be much help if it turned into a downpour.

“C’mon, we should find some shelter,” Shiori said, glancing up at the sky to gauge how much time they had before things got worse. “Last thing I need is for you to catch a— AAH!” Before she could finish, she slipped and landed face-first in the mud. Pain shot through her as she grabbed at her ankle, trying to steady her breathing. As the adrenaline wore off, the full extent of her injuries began to reveal themselves. Pulling up her leggings, she saw her ankle was swollen and turning a nasty shade of purple. Sprained—at least she hoped that’s all it was. Holding back tears, she was oddly thankful for the rain; at least it hid how close she was to completely losing it.

“‘Nice one?!’” Shiori’s inflammatory remark brought Ayame’s mind crashing back to her immediate surroundings. The girl whipped her head around and shot to her feet, seething with rage with her fists clenching into a white knuckled grip. Yeah, that was rich coming from the one that got them into this mess. Was it too hard to pay attention to where she was going? These scathing remarks were at the tip of her brain, rising through her throat like a familiar Fireball jutsu. The fire was extinguished once she watched the oni girl slip and fall. Shiori not rising to her feet suggested an injury, a twist or a sprain. As the rain began to pour, misting the two Genin, Ayame let out a heavy breath. Now wasn’t the time for meaningless bickering. Not if they wanted to get home.

The red headed Uchiha loosened her fists and walked over and extended a hand to Shiori to help her out of the water. “Can you stand?” She asked with a grunt as she pulled her squadmate to her feet. Regardless of the answer, Ayame tread the river water to at least examine what was left of their supplies. A single scroll was dry enough. Two packages of rations and one bottle of water. If spread thinly, it was enough for one person for about twelve hours. Ayame looked up to share a glance at Shiori and immediately lost her balance. She regained it quick enough, but the feeling of the world spinning around her didn’t fade as quickly. She rested her hand to head and let out another breath as Shiori came back into focus.

The girl from Arashi was loud, obnoxiously so, but confident. For better or for worse she never backed down from a challenge. Ayame had seen Shiori in action, easily taking down multiple adults twice her size. But here, however, with the rain beginning to drench her… it really brought home just how young Shiori was. Ayame was vaguely aware that she probably looked very similar, like a frightened child. Or maybe she was projecting. “Right, shelter.” She said, her tone a mixture of stunned and calm, almost a whisper. Ayame made steps towards Shiori as the two began to move, giving the girl the chance to walk on her own but being close enough to help her if she needed it.

Walking through the forest was almost as bad as the fall. Bouts of dizziness hit Ayame every few minutes, the most recent one resulting in a wave of nausea so strong that she had to go behind a tree to throw up. This would be much easier if she could get a message to Isshin-sensei, or Genma, or Kazuki. But the scrolls containing her ability to summon crows were, by now, drenched and the ink washed away. Ayame could try summoning them another way, but it was one she hadn’t figured out yet. Still, as she began to bite the tip of her thumb, she had to try. Her teeth punctured skin, drawing blood, before she formed handsigns. Boar. Dog. Bird. Monkey. Ram. Ayame threw her hand down, expelling chakra through her palm in order to summon…nothing.

She bit her thumb again. Boar. Dog. Bird. Monkey. Ram. Nothing. She bit again. Boar. Dog. Bird. Monkey. Ram. Nothing. Still she repeated the process until her thumb was covered more in blood than it was rain. What she did manage to summon, however, was another wave of dizziness. Ayame let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding and stumbled to a nearby tree, collapsing her back against it before sliding to the ground like a crumpled piece of paper. “See… anything…?" She managed to ask between gasps, her eyes shutting as her head rolled back against the tree.

SHIORI MORITHE GREYOF THE BLACK-POWDER CLAN
Shiori winced, another spike of pain lancing its way through her ankle, as she accepted Ayame's help in getting up. She could manage to stand, shifting her weight to her good foot, but would need aid in walking. Shiori undid the clasps holding her blade's sheath in place and let it fall to her side, using the scabbard as a makeshift crutch. Giving a few steps, she tested it out. Not perfect, but it'll have to do.

Shiori didnt give her companion too much mind as the pair limped their way through the woods, choosing to focus on getting as much of the muck on her cleared as she could. It was bad enough she was soaked through to the bone, but did she really have to deal with all the mud?

With her attention firmly rooted in herself, Shiori didnt register Ayame's sudden bouts of nausea or her unrelenting abuse of her thumb. It wasn't until Ayame collapsed against the tree that Shiori finally pulled her attention away from herself. On instinct, she readied another petty jab set to dig at Ayame's failings, but here in the rain, something just didnt seem right.

Ayame looked beaten, and not just from the fall. The labored breathing, the sudden exhaustion, the bloody hand... goodness, she was pushing herself way to hard. Shiori let out a sigh, limping over to her partner. "Hey, it's gonna be okay, um... you can like, take it easy or whatever," she said, eyes wandering every-which-way but at Ayame's. Between the Oni and her Mother's particular demeanor, warm words and feelings didn't come naturally to Shiori. As an added gesture, she offered the girl the small gourd tied off at Shiori's hip, which she'd immediately recognize as Shiori's sake bottle. Highly intoxicating, yes, but full of invigorating chakra.

While she waited to see whether or not her partner would accept the gourd, Shiori looked around at their surroundings. "Nothing. Just rain and leaves," she grumbled. "I guess if we could head back to the cliff, we may find a cave or an outcropping to take shelter under. Or... we may find a village if we follow the river. Isnt that like a thing?"
