Introduction

Hey everyone. Are you looking for a pattern? When maybe this list will help you where to look. Each post will focus on a different company or line. It will include a bio of the company, links, what type of patterns to expect, and other notes to keep in mind. Please read each one carefully as some companies/patterns may be difficult to work with or not have the product type you're looking for.

If you don't see a company or person here, please introduce them to me and I'll write up a little post for them. If you see an error then please correct me on them. Thank you in advance.

Mainstream Companies

Burda

Burda was founded as a fashion magazine in 1949 in Germany. Due the the popularity of the sewing magazine they expanded into pattern making. They are currently a member group under Simplicity patterns.

Types of Patterns: European Fashion, Some historical

Butterick

Butterick is an American pattern making company that started as a magazine in 1867 by Ebenezer Butterick. By 1876 they started their pattern making line and they quickly spread. In 1961 they became the trademark of Vogue and in 2001 McCalls had bought Vogue along with it Butterick.

Butterick patterns are known for some of the reenactment pieces. The line is called Making History.

Kwik Sew

Kwik was founded in 1967 and has made it their mission to provide daily clothing that is quick and fun to make. They have been part of McCalls since 2011.

Types of Patterns: Some fashion, mostly crafts

Notes: Kwik is made for beginning sewers. Only available at JoAnn.

McCalls

McCalls is one of the largest pattern producers in the US and was founded in 1870 as a pattern making company, by 1873 it also produced it's own magazine.

As of 2014, McCalls has shifted it's focus a little and partnered up with well known cosplayers and designers such as Yaya Han, Ichigo Black, among others, to produce patterns geared towards Cosplay. This includes creating a page just for cosplay that is assisted in upkeep by Yaya Han.

Types of Patterns: Variety

Notes: Mccalls works with some famous costume makers and designers, including Yaya Han and Angela Clayton.

Patterns: Fashion

Notes: The theme of this company is cheap patterns to make quick fashionable designs.

Simplicity

Simplicity was founded in New York City in 1927 and was based on making patterns that would give an ideal fit.

Patterns: Variety

Notes: Works with famous designers such as American Duchess and Andrea Schewe.

Vogue

Vogue was founded in 1892 as a magazine (that still runs today), but developed it's own patterns. The pattern making part was bought by Butterick and then later McCalls bought Butterick.

Patterns: High Fashion

Notes: Has a historical line.

Folkwear

Started in the 1970s, Folkwear has always had a goal of bring authentic ethnic and vintage patterns, just way they would have been made.

Reconstructing history was founded in 1997 by a woman who wanted to make historically accurate clothing for the Elizabethan Irish. She has since expanded to other groups.

Notes: Known for being difficult to understand.

Gertie is known for not only her pattern, but also her books and is a fan of vintage passion. She launched her website and new pattern collection in 2017.
