I've just started percussion this semester and I'm trying to catch up with the others. But for some reason, I can't hold up the cymbals. My hands get all red like the circulation is cut off. Plus the others say I'm playing them wimpy-like, but the other guy started to play the part instead of me and he did the same thing. Does anybody have any advice?

Well, if you are holding them so they look like...

Then your hands are probably loseing circulation. I usually hold one in my left hand so that it is horizontal and I crash the other one into it with my right.
Kinda hard to draw that one rolleyes

We played the song again today and I did what you said. They didn't complain once! I guess I did better than last time.

if you're going to be playing them for a while, you might want to build up your arm strength. i have my section hold out the cymbals horizontally for as long as they can. it tires them out, but they can hold them longer the next time.

I'll try that. I'll have to do it with our old ones though. My section is a bit overprotective of the new ones we just got.

Well, my fish year they told us to put our hands through the handle things and hold them "like so" (i dont kno whow to explain it). However, this year in football season I just held onto the outtside of them, it is more comfy to me. I dont play them in concert though, there are other people for that xd

Right now, we're in the concert/symphonic season. Next semester is marching, though.

That's definately bad for your hand. Maybe you should try using other cymbals.....
I'm not a cymbal player.

Are you holding the crash sybols with your hands inside of the straps? Or how are you holding them?

Well, we got shiny brand new ones about a month ago, so I started to use those. The straps on it are too short, so I'm wrapping my hand around the whole strap. They're still a bit heavy, but I guess I'll manage. Plus, they sound sooooo much better than the old ones. mrgreen

Okay, because I was taught to never put your hands through the straps. You can seriouly injure yourself while doing so. Besides that ignore the othersr and take your time, you have enough time to figure it out and all.

Sometimes you might be holding it the right way and your hands still hurt...i've been in percussion for about five years now and my hands still hurt when I hold the Cymbals so I dont know....I just suck it up and go with it
