Prologue
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

As the clouds parted slightly, the faded beams of moonlight fell upon a shadow that fully formed into a silhouette of a man as it fell upon the corner of a square in the city. A man dressed in robes and a strange colorful mask appeared just as fast as the shadow. He looked down at his wrist, checking his watch before looking up and out towards the square. Seconds later, several other figures appeared in the shadows, all wearing masks much like his, one by one, standing silently on the curb. The night might have been just another night, quiet, beautiful, and simple as the cars passed one another through the square. But not for a single action, defect, or mishap the square might have seen an ease of mundane passerby's, the quiet hum of engines roaring back and forth instead of the monstrous crash that roared up uncharacteristically, echoing through the streets. The night was cold, a light breeze chilling the air as everything went seemingly silent at that moment. At the edge of the square, a lone child stumbled out from the wreckage, losing his strength and dropping down onto the curb as he tried to catch his breath, tears stinging his face.

Slowly, the man dressed in black robes stepped forward and took a seat by the child, pulling his mask off of his face as the silhouette and rampant brilliant colors of a burning flame started to fill the square in the distance. Behind the sitting man and child, the figures stood waiting and watching, looking out over the chaos. The child looked up at the man, his tears continuing to fall across his face, smearing themselves with blood that appeared on the right side of his face. The man smiled at the child and leaned forward on the curb to better face the child. "You're okay..." The man said comfortingly while keeping his gaze on the child. "Take a moment, and check for yourself, does it still hurt?" He asked while holding a hand up. The child looked at him confusedly for a moment and then started to look around his own body. The man was right, he could feel no pain. Looking up at the man, he watched him with shock for a moment before his face changed to one of contemplation. "I know, and I'm sure you are frightened, but everything will be alright, I assure you." He said before looking out once more, facing the direction of the flames.

In the distance, a large bus was in shambles, broken apart on the edge of the square, engulfed in flames, and entangled with a large pole that had been knocked down. The bus was lying on its side, with many caught inside, but many men and women were lying about on the ground, unmoving, some from within the bus, and others not. The scene quickly turned to chaos as men and women from the surrounding buildings and other cars came running to try and help, pulling people out of the wreckage. In the midst of the wreckage, there was a woman screaming someone's name, looking through the wreckage frantically without a care, but none responded to her. Sighing lightly, the man stood and held a hand out to the child. "Come, why don't we find your mother, I'm sure she is worried," He said calmly while waiting for the child to take up his hand himself. After a moment, the child stood and nodded his head, taking the man's hand and looking up at him. The man then pulled a curious mask across his face, one that the child hadn't noticed before. The mask was a brilliant color, reds, and golds in patterns across what looked like the shape of a fox. The child laughed for a moment, before looking up and saying, "You're silly..." The man laughed in response while looking down at the child. "It's cute right?" He answered as the child nodded in answer, and the two of them walked back into the chaos of the wreckage, stepping towards the woman who was screaming in the square.

After a moment, she noticed them both, and ran over, grabbing the child and hugging him close. But then she stopped and an expression of fright took over her face when she looked upon the man. Lost in the roaring sounds of the flames, and shouting men and women of the scene, the man spoke to the woman, and she fell to her knees, sobbing intensely while holding her child close. The man lowered his head for a moment and held his hand out to her as well, and he waited patiently for her to take it. She sobbed a bit more, as the child held her back and looking up at her quizzically. She smiled at him lovingly, trying to reassure him before looking up at the man and nodding. She reached up and took his hand, and then just as quickly as he appeared, all three of them faded into nothing, disappearing into the night.

Shortly after, one by one, the remaining figures that were standing on the outskirts of the curb where the man sat with the child started to head into the chaotic scene. One by one, as their assigned charges appeared in the square, Souls that would appear from the men and women that didn't survive the chaotic accident. Each one would meet with and explain their purpose, giving some time to the lost and confused souls before taking them away and disappearing from the square. In the distance, looking over the square from atop a building nearby, was a beautiful white wolf standing tall in the moonlight. A blink of an eye and the wolf was gone, leaving the living to take care of what remained...

The Wellspring Inn or ‘The Well’ for short was a haven for wayward souls in need of a short respite before their final judgement. It was run by Reaper No. 72876, or ‘Rogue’ as his fellow Reapers called him. It was here, or at similar establishments, that new Reapers were brought for their orientation and training. Given the modern culture, new Reapers were coming more often than they had before, it was quite sad really, but One wouldn’t refuse the extra help. Growing populations meant more deaths and that meant more souls to guide, so more Reapers were a blessing.

Arms crossed over her chest, One took a deep breath in before slowly releasing it, the air hissing through her mask lightly. All Reapers were assigned a mask; it distinguished their rank as well as their role, but it also hid them from the view of mortals. A very handy tool indeed. As the First Reaper, One’s mask design was special. She was the only Reaper that possessed the half mask of a Demon. Normally Revenants possessed full demon masks, signifying that they were damned souls, but One’s mask was that of a Samurai, a relic that she’d died with long ago. The Gods had allowed her to keep it, not out of courtesy but as a reminder of her past and the actions that had led to her becoming the very first Reaper.

Stretching her neck, One tapped her fingers against her arm. The car was late. It happened on occasion, more so when it needed to pick up more than one Reaper. In this case, three new Reapers would be arriving at The Well to begin their new roles. She didn’t envy them, becoming a Reaper wasn’t an honor or a privilege, it was more of a trial, but they’d learn that soon enough.

When a thick fog appeared at the far end of the drive, One knew that it was time. A luxury car pulled up to the steps upon which she stood, a valet stepping out to open the door and usher the perplexed Reapers from the car.

“Welcome to The Well. I am Reaper No. 001, but you can call me ‘One’. Follow me.” A short but informative introduction. When she’d first been tasked with greeting new Reapers, she’d given little monologues of explanations of their situation but as the decades and eventual centuries had ticked by, she’d gradually shortened it down to one sentence.

Turning on her heel, One led the way inside the establishment they’d arrived at. The Well was a hotel of sorts a place where souls who’d died unexpectedly were brought to be processed prior to being sent on their way; whether that be to Heaven, Reincarnation, a Trial, Hell or Destruction, remained to be seen. A grand and luxurious building, it was something you expected to see out of a magazine highlighting the ‘Most Expensive Hotels in the World’ kind of deal.

Leather…that was the smell that roused a man with white hair from his slumber. Awakening with a sense of bewilderment, he found himself inside a luxurious car. Along with himself, he eyed two others, one a young man, likely in his teens, the other a woman, possibly in her 20s if he was any judge. “Wh-Where am I?” the man pondered to himself. He tried to think back, to remember how he got here, searching for some kind of logic or reason, until a sudden realisation hit him. ”Who am I?” The situation was a daunting one to say the least, yet he made no shape an panicking, nor did he attempt to make conversations with the others who sat in the car with him.

Doing his best to remain calm and vigilant, he sat there, letting the humming of the car’s engine fill the silence that formed between them. In time, surely, he would receive answers. Getting emotional or distressed never amounted to much in situations such as these, and he for one would be make no such gestures.

After a time had passed, the car would come to a halt, outside a rather fashionable, high-profile building of sorts. A hotel perhaps? It was curious to say the least, the ever-aspiring events only serving to confuse him even more. His train of thought was broken when the car door opened, and the three were beckoned out by the valet.

Upon exiting the vehicle, he was met by the sight of a woman wearing an ornate mask that carried an oriental air about it. She referred to herself as “One” and instructed the trio to follow her. Still a tad confounded to reply verbally, the man simply nodded and proceeded to follow suite.

Perhaps it was the steady vibration of a vehicle in motion, or maybe the arousal of his travelling companions, but as silvery-green eyes opened from beneath the shroud, it wouldn't take more than a fleeting glance towards the other passengers - their features illuminated by the amber glow of passing streetlamps - to force a sudden urge to turn away... With no idea as to where he was, nor who these individuals were, the youth swiftly decided to feign slumber, inhaling deeply as though initiating a yawn before lulling his head towards the window and leaning into the edge of the door as he watched through the slits of his mask as the world passed them by...

He was tense, but if he was afraid, he couldn't remember the reason why... Seeing as though he wasn't bound in any way besides his seatbelt and knowing there was little point in kicking up a fuss until an issue presented itself, he instead narrowed his gaze, scrutinising the foggy driveway as they turned towards it, taking note of everything that he could glean from the gloom before allowing his attention to shift towards a masked figure as the car rolled to a stop just paces away. Within moments, they were ushered from the vehicle and as he stepped out, the youth would stretch sleepily, yawning once more before taking note of the sound his trainers made upon the gravelly floor.

The female's introduction was short enough that perhaps not all details would make immediate sense to him, but within seconds of speaking, she had turned and started up the steps towards the grand establishment. Her instructions to follow were obeyed with little resistance from his feet and as he tried to take everything in, he couldn't help but wonder if this was reality, or perhaps just a really, strange dream...?

Her eyes snapped open as if she'd been shocked. Immediately not recognizing anything she saw, she would glance around with only her eyes, trying to contain her panicked breathing. It was dark, there were two other people in the car with her. The seats were arranged so four people could sit together in the back across from one another. They seemed like they could be male but she wasn't entirely sure. The only light she had to go by was the street lights that passed by from time to time. Daring a glance out the window she couldn't see where they were, only that it was foggy, they were left alone in the back of the car driving towards who knows what. Despite being very anxious she found a mask in her lap. Sitting up slightly she looked down at the mask. It was a dark red and white color with blue accents on the cheeks and nose. Beautiful and it looked quite familiar to her but she couldn't place where she had seen one.

It was at this point she realized she couldn't remember where she had come from, worse still, she couldn't remember who she was! Nothing came to mind as she racked her brain for answers. Nothing, not even a name. She found herself looking back at the mask as her breathing became more erratic. Picking it up and placing it over her face she made sure it was secure before removing her hands. Once in place, she closed her eyes and her breathing began to slow. Her platinum blonde hair framed the mask nicely. Opening her eyes once more she took notice that the car had stopped. Peering across the car she could see the lights of what was probably the fanciest building she had laid eyes on. Not that she'd remember if she had ever seen it or anything else before. Before she had time to consider anything further a valet had opened the door for them and the other passengers stepped out of the vehicle.

A woman with a mask quite different from her own stood before them. Her outfit older looking, as if it were from a completely different era. She introduced herself and turned her back to them after giving them only one order, to follow. With that, she began to walk towards the large luxurious building. But this one was stuck on her introduction.' A reaper? ' In her foggy memory that word struck a chord. She couldn't remember where she had heard it from or even entirely what it meant here. But one thing she felt was an absolute certainty was that if this woman was what she said she was, then they would need to be very cautious. Stepping out of the car her boot heel hit the pavement quietly and she very slowly, fluidly got out of the car. The wind catching her hair and blowing it back gently she walked forward. Her heels clicking against the floor as she followed the group. Now out of the car, she could tell that her fellow passengers were both males. One was a bit older looking, fair white hair, his mask was like hers but was gold instead of red and blue. Dressed in what she could only describe as professional clothes. While the other, also hidden behind his mask which was purple, almost black with slightly lighter purple accents. She could see a tuff of red hair fluttering on the side of his mask. He was dressed more like a younger adult but wouldn't be able to make a more accurate guess till she could see his face. But for now, she needed to focus on where they were going and what was going to happen next.

Stepping into the grand space, One led the way through the foyer where souls were ‘checked in’ at the front desk and assigned a room where they could rest and contemplate their newfound situation - death - while the Owner and his assistants worked to determine the souls assignments; where they should be sent next.

Unscheduled deaths were tricky. Usually deaths were scheduled by the gods themselves, reading the winds of change and carefully spotting even the most minute details of the slightest events in the world. This also meant that most scheduled deaths could be predictable; the old man with lung cancer, the alcoholic widow, the reckless adrenaline junkie, an unfortunate car accident, someone who choked at a meal, another who discovered a severe allergy too late. Their fates after death were scheduled ahead of time so that when a Reaper went to escort the soul, things were more or less settled. But it was the unscheduled deaths that gave the Reapers the most work; Deaths that occur outside of the purview of the gods domain. The one caveat that remained truly outside of the gods control, was that of a living being's free will. Thus when the actions of an individual life were to immediately cause the death of either themselves, or another, these were the only deaths that the was outside of the gods design; Murder, suicide, and especially those whose deaths occur as an unintended effect of a Reaper's actions. Those unscheduled deaths needed to be processed and analysed carefully to ensure that someone was dealt the hand they deserved in the afterlife; no one wanted a murderer to go to Heaven, or a good samaritan to be sent for destruction. Therefore, Reapers needed to be 100% sure about their assessments and their reports to the gods before they sent souls onward.

New Reapers were sent to these Havens, or ‘Hotels’ of sorts for their orientation and training. Working in these establishments helped ease them into their new roles as Reapers before they were assigned assignments out in the mortal realm; collecting souls, hunting revenants, etc.It was the best way to get them started.

As the small group moved through the hotel, souls of all types could be seen mingling, eating, reading, chatting. There were the elderly, the middle aged and the young. Some had wounds that were obvious, others did not. There were other Reapers milling around and/or working; they stood out due to their masks. Some reapers wore them to the side of their face, others on the top of their head or tied to their waist. A Reaper's Mask was priceless, so they were never without it. When they caught sight of One, each Reaper stood at attention as if to greet a General.

Stopping in the center of the Grand Hall, a double-sided staircase led to an upper level where a large bar and cafe was set up overlooking the lower level. The couches, plush seats and tables situated around the present area were perfect for souls to socialize in when not in their room. There were other amenities on different floors, but those remained to be seen.

“You will each be assigned a room here at The Well. You will report directly to the Owner, a Reaper by the name of ‘Rogue’, who will oversee your training. I suggest that you familiarize yourself with this place intimately, it will be your new home for a great many years.” It was different for each Reaper - some stayed only a couple of years before getting promoted, others hung around for decades and in the rare case, centuries.

“Each of you arrived here with a mask. Your mask is your most priceless possession. You will learn more about it, but just know, that to lose your mask or have it destroyed would mean a fate worse than death.” One’s role was very much a ‘doom and gloom’ sort of thing, but someone needed to be.

Reapers…figures in old tales the white-haired man had heard as a child. Was he to believe they were real? The circumstances he found himself in were most puzzling, he wasn’t sure what to make of it. Looking to the others who had arrived in the car with him, he gazed intently at their masks before caressing his own. If this woman was as she said…then the only logic that would explain this situation is that he would have to have died. As confusing as current events were, he still found it a little hard to believe. A Reaper? A luxurious hotel? Surely this was all nonsense. Who was to say the three of them hadn’t be abducted? Yet, despite his doubts, One’s nonchalant disposition indicated that such was the true nature of things. The woman seemed almost…too calm…too professional to be pulling their leg.

As they followed One into the foyer, the man’s doubts faded away instantly. Amongst the crowd of chattering guests, he noticed that many bore injuries, far too authentic. As well as that, there were others with masks of a similar design to theirs. To see this people in such states, to engage in casual conversation despite the forms they bared…it was almost…unnerving. Regardless, the current locale was too loud for his liking. Walking on the group came to a halt where he noticed how those with masks stood at attention as One’s presence became apparent, as if to salute her. Looking to the woman, he had to assume that she was their superior. It would certainly explain her mask, baring a rather different design compared to the rest.

He would listen further as one continued to inform them of their current state of affairs. An assigned room, to report to another by name of “Rogue” for training and that they must never misplace or destroy their masks. “Training…?” For the time being, he chose to not to respond. Patience was the key, he needed to learn more before making inquiries. He would also be sure to follow One’s advice in familiarising himself with his new surroundings, what better way to adapt?

Looking around, gradually coming to accept that things were indeed as One said they were, he broke his silence. “Fascinating…” he spoke quietly.

To his eyes - and his misinterpreted thoughts about this all being a really eccentric dream - it would appear as though they had entered a rather Luxurious Hotel.

For a building which he had initially mistaken for a Mansion, the interior was equally as impressive. The Architecture for one was stunning and had he not been part of a group headed for who knew where, he might just have branched off on his own to explore - and more importantly, trace his fingertips along the detailed grooves he had spied in the stonework...

He kept close however as 'One' never seemed to break her stride, nor did she say another word until she had led them through the foyer and into a dual-floored vestibule where they finally came to a halt infront of a large, double staircase. Throughout the entire march, the Lad could hardly keep his eyes from straying to their surroundings, drinking in the sights whilst his ears strained to soak up all the sounds that came and went as they progressed deeper into the establishment.

At first glance, he had seen the residents as purely that, Men, Women and Youngsters of varying ages and backgrounds, all interacting pleasantly with one another as though they were perhaps there on a well earned break? It was certainly nice to see the old mixing with the young, but it was as he focused his attention more on the individuals themselves that he began to notice something a little...unsettling? It was at this point that he was grateful to be wearing the mask, for his eyes must have widened considerably at the sight of those who appeared gravely wounded...yet were still milling around as though they hadn't a care in the world...

Averting his eyes from they, who without doubt should have sought themselves immediate medical attention - rather than a holiday - the Lad's gaze now fell upon those who carried strange, yet colourful masks about their person. These particular facades were quite unlike that of their guide's which only covered half of her face, but they were equally as intriguing. Having now come to a stop, the youth chanced a fleeting glance towards his associates, hoping to gain a better grasp as to who they might be now they were standing in the light. To one side stood a gentleman, not that he'd cared to notice this before, but the man was tall and his hair noticeably White, perhaps an indicator of his age? The Youth had to wonder if maybe the guy was a Scholar, or a Librarian? He certainly looked the type to scold you if you broke the pleasant silence of a reading room...but it was as he turned his head to scrutinise the other member of their little troupe that he noted she had already equipped herself with her own mask - One that held a strikingly similar resemblance to those of the other individuals moving around them... 'Wait...'

Uncertain Anxieties suddenly increasing alongside his heart which pounded vigorously within his chest, he was just seconds away from lifting his hands and tearing away the shroud that hid his own features when his attention was drawn once more by the female who had first greeted them... Her next sentence would explain what would be expected of them before reiterating some of the key words that he may have missed in their initial welcome... 'Reaper...? ...Training?' His eyes widened for a second time, then, almost as though someone had taken a photograph with the flash on, hazy memories flickered across his subconscious vision... 'It is done, the contract, complete...'

'That voice...' The fleeting memory of something withdrawing from his vision, blended with the sweet reverence of a feminine voice appeared to wash away all dread that he was lost in a terrible nightmare and instead replaced it with some form of Understanding... He knew not his name, nor how he had come to be in that Car, but standing there within the Great Hall, fellow Initiates situated beside him at least Something now made some sense...

Hearing One speak of how their Masks were their most Priceless of possessions, the Lad would lift his left hand towards the muzzle of the shroud, sliding his fingers along its snout, inspecting every indent before running them gingerly around the eyes and eventually up towards its ears. It may just have flinched a little as the female finished her introductions with a warning that to lose their mask or have it destroyed would result in a fate worse than death, but having hidden his 'nerves' right up until this point, he would allow his hand to drop down and slide casually into his trouser pocket - as though it had been a deliberate move.

The ear closest to the White-Haired Gentleman would twitch as he heard his soft voice, but the youth chose not to react upon it and instead, opted to wait and see what the others would do before deciding upon his next move...

Following the group they entered the building. Once through the doors, her ears were met with thunderous noise. The room foyer was alive with noise. People of all age groups talking, laughing, mingling. As they walked she continued to eye the people loitering about. Something was off, people were injured, some badly. But they didn't seem bothered. So she was to assume they were dead, which in turn meant she was dead. This for some reason or another didn't surprise her or bother her in the slightest. In fact, it made sense. It explained why she didn't know what happened right before waking up in the car or why she couldn't remember who she was. She found small comfort in this as the group continued. Taking note of the other people lingering about she couldn't help but notice they had masks just like hers and her companions. So they were Reapers too? And One was their leader? She was still slightly confused about that topic in particular. She just had to hope that her questions got answered in time.

As they stopped at the dual staircase she looked up and was surprised at just how tall the building was. Sure it was big on the outside but being inside and seeing it felt different. It was at this point One began speaking at them again. She would get her own room, and she had to report to the owner whose name was Rogue for training. So she was to become a Reaper as well? That would answer why she had a mask then. She was also instructed to learn the layout of the building. Simple request. As she continued about the mask she felt her hands subconsciously touch her mask. Taking it off she would hold it out in front of herself. Remembering that a lot of the other Reapers didn't have it on their faces she attached hers to her hip. These masks were important and that much she could tell by One's tone. Even though she could be over-exaggerating, she didn't feel like One was that kind of person. So she would internalize this and take it to heart.

But there were many things that had gone unanswered. And she was growing tired of waiting to see if One would answer them. Clearing her throat softly she would open her mouth to speak. " One, I don't know if we're allowed to ask questions or not but I'd like permission to speak for a moment. '' When One didn't immediately rip her head off she assumed it was okay to keep going. " Judging by what I've seen up to this point I assume we're dead, right? And being trained to be a Reaper means we were selected after we died to do this? But why can't I remember my life before waking up in the car? " She said her tone even, calm. Her voice was actually quite mature-sounding and held a very business-like seriousness to it. " I apologize if this is taboo or if I've overstepped. But If there's any way I could figure out how I...ended up here, I would like to know." She already knew One wouldn't be able to tell her or just straight up wouldn't tell her. Which was fine she supposed. But not taking the chance to find out bothered her and if she was destined not to know then she would just have to move on and start her new life as a reaper.

Despite preparing herself for the answer she knew was most likely coming she couldn't help but shake this dreadful feeling in her chest. Just thinking about the fact that she was dead made parts of her body hurt. She didn't really address it and she didn't think much more about it. More shocking would be if One actually had an answer for her other than ' that's classified. ' Or '******** off,' Which would all be fair since she literally had no idea what was happening and had been going with the flow up till this point. But it didn't seem like her comrades were going to speak up so she figured she would at least try to get some answers.

User ImageAs the night passed on, souls being serviced left and right as many others were ushered in to be checked in a serviced as well, the Reapers that had stopped at the presence of One all bowed lightly before returning to their duties. There were various types of Souls being serviced, many that had injuries as a part of their deaths. Of course, this could easily be unsettling, depending on the type of injury, however for those who had been in the Inn for some time, resting and being serviced in preparation for their inevitable departure, their wounds had already healed, and their Soul looked good as new. This wasn't always the case, but for a far majority, this healing helped them to process and accept their deaths, and leave with no regrets.

User ImageMoments later, another Reaper suddenly appeared in the middle of the hall. His mask was a bit different from the rest of the Reapers, covering only most of his face, about a quarter of his lower mouth and jaw revealed. His mask was a bit rounder, with slightly more elongated ears and larger eyes. The man bowed quickly towards One and was about to speak when a commotion taking place on the far side of the lobby suddenly erupted into screams. A young woman had fallen into hysterics as she started to berate another soul, the escalation of an argument that must have been ongoing for some time. "I trusted you!," The woman screamed while standing with both fists balled at her side, her voice quickly filling the room as her inhibitions quickly faded. "You did this, you killed us, all because you couldn't keep it in your pants!" She screamed out while throwing a vase she had picked up at the soul she was screaming at. "And for what? A hussy b***h that looks like she was tossed in a dumpster fire!? HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!" She continued to say as she screamed over and over.

The Reapers at their side attempted to calm them both, as the man started to yell back at her, and their blended voices started making it difficult for anyone to understand either of them. As the yelling continued, however, the woman's screams started to echo a bit more through the halls, and moments later, her voice started to boom as the Soul inadvertently started to cause some strange phenomena around the room. As items started to float and crash about the room, the lights started to flicker and dance, and on one of the dancing waves of flickering light, the couple was suddenly completely surrounded by a new group of Reapers that appeared out of thin air. As if they had conjured out of thin air, these Reapers appeared like a pack of wolves, surrounding the arguing couple and seemingly ready to pounce. Their masks were completely different from all of the other Reapers, with elongated snouts and bigger, slightly pointed ears that look fairly intimidating from the rest. One could tell just from looking upon them that they were somewhat different from the rest of the Reapers. As soon as the souls around them saw them they all became a bit more aware, some cautiously backing away from the scene, and others watching on in silence. The man who was being yelled out stopped yelling immediately and went silent as he stared at the Reaper that appeared behind the screaming woman. The screaming woman on the hand wasn't so aware of her surroundings and continued to scream, as she did so, one of the new Reaper's started to step forward at the screaming woman.

Each new Reaper was unique in their personality and reaction to their new situation. The first, the scholarly type, seemed fascinated and said as much as he took in the sight of the hotel, it’s guests and the staff. Meanwhile, the younger boy looked a bit perplexed with it all and lastly, the lone female of the group had the bravery to ask questions that all three were likely burning to know. One had to respect her tenacity.

Hands clasped lightly at the small of her back, One observed the girl for a moment before she spoke. “There is no need to apologize. Everyone who has ever been chosen for this role has felt the same as you, my dear.” Wanting answers, seeking them openly despite the possible consequences.

“Yes, you are correct. Each of your lives has met it’s inevitable end.” That in and of itself was a hard truth. “Your memories, for the time being, have been taken from you by the God of Death when she sealed the contract with you. Over time, you’ll regain them and come to realize why you were chosen for this new role.” Only the Gods could reveal their pasts to them.

One would have said more but the raised voices of a pair of souls overshadowed anything that she might have said in that moment. Turning her gaze towards the two, she observed them in silence. It wasn’t uncommon for situations like this to occur but regardless, disturbances were quickly dealt with, especially when the souls began to wreak havoc. “Stay here.” A simple command given to the new recruits, one which they would do well to obey.

Stepping forward, One’s actions were met by the appearance of the Hunters, Reapers who were tasked with dealing with unruly souls, such as these. When the Hunter stepped forward to subdue the screaming woman, One held up her hand. “Hold.” The gesture and the spoken word stopped the Hunters in their tracks. Each of them bowed their head to her in reverence and took a step back.

Looking between the man and the woman, One knew that sometimes, all souls needed to do was get a bit of their aggression out. So why not give them the opportunity? “Madam, according to you, this man whom you trusted, betrayed you and in doing so cost you your life.” Turning to look at the man, One narrowed her gaze.“And you haven’t said a word in your defense. Therefore…” Drawing out two lethal looking blades, one in each hand, One stepped forward to offer each of them a weapon. Looking to the woman, One gave her an intense look. “Take it. Get your aggression out. Seize your revenge, if not in life, then in death.” It wouldn’t be fair to just offer the woman a blade, so One looked to the man. “Take it, and if you wish, defend yourself.” Whether or not they’d do it, she didn’t know. But it didn’t matter. Ninety percent of the time people we all talk and no action. If the woman needed to scream and cry then she could, but she would do so in an area where she would agitate the other guests. Or, here and now, she could take her pound of flesh from the one who’d ended her life.

The infrastructure of The Well was a wonder to be sure, glimmering and shining with luscious brilliance. For some reason, though he possessed no memory of who he was, nor how or why he was summoned here, he felt almost dumbfounded and how…normal their current locale appeared. He felt as, if one were to think of a purgatory for souls, they would imagine something much more…inhuman in nature. An astral plain, a pathway atop the clouds leading to a towering palace? Something grandiose and godlike. Their current setting, by comparison, felt some much more…worldly. Not that he would complain necessarily. If anything, he felt that he very much preferred a humbler scene. And what is more, the manner in which One referred to the Reapers and their collecting of souls, the mention of specific processes, training and so on only served to reinforce the human feel of the current venue.

His thoughts were broken when the young woman next to him inquired as to their reason for being here. He eyed the blonde curiously. Her questions were fair enough, the same that he himself had in mind. He had planned to make inquiries when he felt time was appropriate, but now that the necessary questions had been put forward, all that was needed to receive answers.

Sure enough, One wasted no time in providing a concise explanation which, at least as far as he was concerned, told him everything he needed to know for certain. The lack of memory, arriving here and the arrangement to become Reapers. All due to the influence of the God of Death. Oddly though, the mention of a contract evoked something in him…a vague…blurry image of a woman, her voice so calm and soft it provoked a warm sensation in the chest, of contentment, of peace. Then he remembered…

“It is done, the contract, complete…”

It was jarring almost, to know now that such a beautiful voice belonged to the God of Death. Nevertheless, he found himself most intrigued. “To become a Reaper…” he pondered.

His thoughts were once again broken at the sound of a female’s enraged shriek from across the way. Eyes screwing shut in agitation he growled under his breath as he turned slowly, opening them to glare at the source of such an unruly disturbance. A woman stood screaming and accusing a man of a supposed betrayal which subsequently led to their deaths. By the sounds of it, it seemed that the male in question was involved with a wench of some sort. Though the details of how such an involvement lead to their demise, of course, remained undisclosed. Looking to One, he would nod as she commanded them to stay put. Not that he had any intention of getting involved anyway. So long as whatever was done re-established order, he couldn’t have cared less. What did pique his interest, however, was how One approached the situation. She offered two choices, presenting the two souls with a blade each. Either settle their dispute by combat or take their feud elsewhere. Donning a contemplative look, he stroked the base of his chin beneath his mask, an eager intrigue taking hold as he observed…

With everyone maintaining a somewhat Impassive approach to One's introduction, the Lad had to admit he had been quite surprised to watch as the Fair-Haired female now removed her shroud, holding out the Mask infront of her as though inspecting it closely before attaching it to her hip as she had seen several other Reapers around them do - Perhaps that was something he could consider for himself when they were given the freedom to explore? For the moment however, it felt more comfortable just to leave his where it was - Concealing his face from view.

Her next move might just have placed the female in a much higher standing over her associates as she would now attempt to draw One's attention in a calm manner by quietly clearing her throat before opening her enquiry with the questions they perhaps all sought the answers to...? It was growing increasingly obvious that they had all perished in some way or form and had been brought there as a result, but what might just have played on their minds most regarded their lives before they had first awoken - and more importantly, why none of them could remember...? The Youth had to admit, he would have liked to have known his name and maybe what had happened to him to cause his summoning to such a place so early into his life...? One's explanation, although understandable, also felt a little unfair, but he knew there was very little he could do about it now a pact had been made and instead turned to watch as another Reaper manifested beside them, bowing to their Guide respectfully before another quirk of fate drew their attention towards a commotion in the centre of the Hall.

With the Hotel initially appearing to be such a unique and unexpectedly pleasant place to reside after death, this outburst must have been the last thing anyone could have expected, but ever the inquisitive young man, he would find himself distracted by the scene as the woman now began screaming at the top of her lungs before launching a vase in the direction of another individual whom he could only presume had once been a partner of hers? One's simple command to 'Stay' refocused his concentration back towards their Guide and he would watch as she turned away before lifting his gaze to watch as more decorations began to lift from their stands...

Appearing quicker than one could have successfully completed a single blink of the eye, Several Masked Individuals suddenly materialised within the Hall. Almost like Watchdogs summoned to an intruder, the group swiftly encircled the hostile pair, cutting off any chance of escape as the argument continued to intensify... It was in that moment that many of the room's occupants began to disperse, backing away from the group as though knowing it was within their best interests to leave the Reapers to deal with the situation undistracted. Their arrival had even silenced the yelling man, but it was the Woman who persisted in voicing her discontent that held their attention most and the Lad now drew his lower lip back, perhaps grazing the skin with his teeth as he watched a single Individual advance towards her...

One's next move would show just how she was respected by the others, for with a simple word and gesture of the hand, the Reaper that had started on their way to neutralise the threat, suddenly paused and bowed their head - much like the rest of the Pack around them - before backing off as the Female continued in her approach. It was One's following decision that forced the youth to quirk an eyebrow as after a brief conversation, she now appeared to give the sparring pair each a dangerous looking weapon - and with it, an option to settle their differences through battle...

'Is she for Real?' His eyes would flit between his associates, pondering their own reactions to what they were seeing before tilting his head as he heard a disgruntled growl from the Older Male... The Scholar's displeasure to the commotion wasn't as interesting as the developing scene however and he soon returned his gaze towards the pair, eager to see would they might do next...

Her eyes widened slightly. She had not anticipated One honestly answering her, but she did. She was right, they had died and this was the afterlife. One continued she explained how their memories were purposely taken from them. But assured them that they would regain them slowly and with them realize why they were chosen for this role. That part was a bit ominous, she wasn't sure she wanted to know the reason why she was chosen for something like this. But it would be nice to remember who she was. Just as One had finished her explanation a ruckus had broken out in the foyer. All of the other Reapers in the vicinity had turned to watch the spectacle. A young-looking woman and man were arguing, and quite loudly at that. The female seemed the most distressed, she was picking up random objects and throwing them at the male. She was clearly upset with the male. From what she could hear he was a cheater and he was the reason they were both dead. As the argument progressed a group of Reapers appeared in the blink of an eye. They were somehow different than the ones previously standing about. There was a strong intimidating aura emanating from them and a mask that was quite clearly different from their own. Stranger still was that the lights flickering and other objects around the lobby were floating and crashing. Was this caused by the argument? Her thoughts were brought back to the present when one of the new Reapers started approaching the woman.

Their mentor decided to go intervene. Once their guide had left she noticed that the lobby had cleared out considerably. As One made her way over to the arguing couple every Reaper present would part the way for one and stand at attention as she made her way to the source of the disturbance. Once she was standing with the couple she presented them with two choices. Sort it out with combat or move on. A very direct way to handle the situation. She thought this was a more than fair enough way to settle things. Looking to her comrades she couldn't quite tell if they were for or against their mentor's decision. The only thing she knew for sure was that the older-looking male made a disapproving grunt with a stance that showed his interest was piqued, while the younger male seemed more composed. Though he hadn't made a noise and his body language hadn't changed much. She herself watched on with a bit of excitement in her eyes. She thought that being a Reaper would be boring and her eternal afterlife would be equally as boring. But if this is how some people behaved after they died then maybe things wouldn't be so boring.

Clasping her hands together behind her back she would continue to watch and wait to see what happens. " I'm don't know about you guys but I kinda hope they sort it out here in the lobby. " Her tone held a bit of excitement. It interested her quite a bit to see how two souls fought one another with weapons. Could they be hurt by these weapons? Were they special weapons? Could souls die again? It was all quite interesting to think about. She could tell with One's presence that both souls were no longer sure about what to do. Their body language said it all. They were unsure if she was serious. Though the female was still visibly mad, the yelling had stopped and both souls were completely focused on One and her proposal. Now all they had to do was wait to see which option they chose and then who would act first.
