The Performance Hall is for Dance and Drama students to perform their practical pieces in front of an audience and peers. This hall allows for multiple stages of varying sizes, there being 3 stages in total. There are also smaller performance rooms that can be used, especially by Dance Students who need an area to practice most times. Drama students often use the smallest of the three stages as their practice area. Choir students will use the smaller rooms of the performance hall for practice, using the stages as their assessment (recitals).

Our music degree prepares aspiring musicians for the rapidly changing music industry. Students are encouraged to create works across musical boundaries and strike out in new directions. If production is your passion, you will focus on creating new music and developing skills in songwriting, studio recording, sequencing, digital processing and writing for acoustic, electric and digital instruments.
If you are interested in performance, you’ll focus on developing your unique performance style and artistic voice, creating new work, using digital technology and developing new interpretations of your repertoire, as well as gaining further experience performing in recording studio and live contexts. If your passion is making music for film, television, animation, games or any other transdisciplinary media environment, you’ll have opportunities to work with students in those disciplines.

In Term 1, the concert that the choir students will participate in at the end of Term 1 will consist of a variety of Disney songs and they will be sung either in solo, duet, or as a group. This is because Musical Theatre students will be doing Cats as their first musical, providing vocals from above the stage while the dancers perform the numbers on stage.
Term 2 and beyond will be all the choir students providing the backing choir roles in the Musical Theatre students in any musical they perform. Over a 3 year university course, the terms would have the following musicals: Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Hamilton, and The Greatest Showman. Grades during these terms will be focused on attendance in class and participation.

Esmeralda smiled as she walked into Choir with Waylon. She looked around wanting to see Kaihe was there already since she that they were going to have this class together. She was excited that she would have two friends in this class and looked forward to hearing them sing. She wondered what Mr. Hardwick would have them do today. She walked to the front row in the middle for now taking a seat and putting her bag down unsure how Mr. Hardwick would want them to sit. "This is exciting!" she said to Waylon. "I'm interested to see who will be here and what everyone's voices sound like" she said with a smile.

Waylon walked in with Esmeralda and wondered where everyone would be sitting. In high school, students were sat in areas depending on their vocal range. He was a falsetto, capable of a vast range from bass to soprano, although he strength of his voice was in a tenor to counter-tenor range. He stood with the other students near the piano, waving at some. Esmeralda seemed to be looking for someone in particular so he let her find that person.
Mister Hardwick seemed to be waiting for all his students to walk in, and it was likely they'd do the "do-re-me" scale higher and higher to determine who was in which section. He was ready for that but it'd be interesting to see people react to his range. Once everyone seemed to be in the room, Mister Hardwick seperated everyone into smaller groups of 10 students each. With 40 students in choir, a huge class to most, it would go quicker. Waylon, Esmeralda, and a variety of others were up first. "Please begin singing the tonic sol-fa method, or the do-re-me scale for those who do not know it's name. Once you hit the last do, if you can sing higher, continue. Once you hit your vocal limit, please stand to the side in order of lowest range to highest," he stated as he sat at the piano.
Waylon began singing, getting higher and higher and higher. Most of the others were already standing to the side while he was hitting high soprano notes. Mister Hardwick raised his brows and nodded in fascination. Waylon was given a choice of where he wanted to be placed, so he chose the tenor section. In that range were students like Hunter, Axel, and Kaihe.

Autumn had walked into the room a little early and noticed a Latina girl walk in, shining with confidence. She smiled to her, even if she didn't notice, and waited to begin the class. They were separated into groups and told to sing a scale she was familiar with, but not ever knowing it's actual name. She was able to sing to a high alto/low tenor range and was therefore placed in the mezzo-soprano section. Also in that section was Esmeralda, the girl she smiled at before. There was an Indian girl named Meera who was able to sing into the soprano range, much to Autumn's surprise.
Once everyone was sorted into their groups, they were sat in their color coded sections in the seating area. In the first two middle rows, in black chairs, were the bass singers. In the remaining middle section rows, in red chairs, were the tenors with those capable of counter-tenor range at the top. On the left side of the room, in purple chairs, were the altos. On the right side of the room, in the bottom rows in blue chairs, were the mezzo-sopranos. On the right side of the room, at the top, in green chairs, were the sopranos.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Autumn Moreno," she said to Esmeralda, sat next to her.
Iseul was in the second group so sing, and she was also selected into the mezzo soprano range. She was nervous because English was still very new to her, but she could sing in English perfectly without her Korean accent shining through. She was worried more about being bullied when trying to speak outside of singing, but she chose choir to try and improve her confidence with English-speaking. She looked around and noticed she was sitting next to two Hispanic looking girls (Esmeralda and Autumn) and directly behind her was an Indian girl (Meera). She was hoping they wouldn't tease her if she spoke in broken English.

Axel was sitting in his section beside the likes of Hunter, Waylon, and Kaihe. They were all tenors, but he didn't know what to expect from the whole class. It was a new experience but Axel wanted it so bad. He wanted to be a singer/songwriter, or a musician, or something in the Music Industry as a whole. He loved to sing, play the guitar, and he loved being on the stage. It was a thrill for him he was seeking. He needed it to breathe, he always said.

Looking around the room, the hispanic girl sitting on the other side of the room looked familiar, her outfit and confidence was something he remembered from lunch at the food trucks. She seemed very friendly and he'd have to make time to go over and talk to her. He doubted they'd share any other classes, but maybe they had something in common.

"𝓟𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓼𝓾𝓻𝓮 𝓽𝓸 𝓶𝓮𝓮𝓽 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓫𝓸𝓽𝓱 𝓪𝓼 𝔀𝓮𝓵𝓵," she stated so they didn't feel left out. She hoped they would get into the basics of class soon, as minors were only an hour and when singing time would fly by in a heartbeat. She wondered what their assessment would be and how they would be graded on it. There would surely be some sort of written assignment, but it would be mostly practical for sure. She was excited to know what she would be graded on and what they would be learning.

When Kaihe walked in, he waved wildly at Esmeralda. He was about to go over and talk to her quickly before everyone was split into groups. He was able to hear her vocal range hit it's high note, pun intended, because he was in the same group. He was placed with the tenors, in the middle of the room, and was impatient to start class. Suddenly, someone beside him introduced himself and asked for names. "My name is Kaihe Wana'ao, but you can call me Kai," he replied.
Kaihe watched the teacher shuffle through paperwork before calling the roll off. It seemed that he had arranged the roll in who was seated in which area, which was impressive to Kaihe. Names were called out, "here"s were followed, and it took 5 minutes to get through all forty students. Kaihe would be happier when something actually started to happen. He didn't like boring and uncertain, he liked excitement or something that captured his attention. He needed something to do.

Esmeralda smiled seeing Kaihe when he walked in and he waved at her. She smiled and waved back. She stood by the piano in her group when the teacher told them to and walked over to her group. Esmeralda sang the do re-re-mi scale when it was her turn. She then turned to look at Autumn when she introduced herself. She smiled. "Nice to meet you too, I'm Esmeralda Garcia" she said then turned to look at Meer when she tapped her shoulder. "Of course I remember. You did such a great job with your audition. I'm sure you'll get the role of Lady MacDuff" she said. She was really impressed with her audition especially her accent. "I'm Esmeralda why the way" she said. She looked to Iseul, who was sitting next to Autumn and smiled. "I'm Esmeralda, it's nice to meet you" she said and let Meera and Autumn introduce themselves too. She looked around and saw Kaihe across the room and he was talking to a guy beside him when they looked she smiled and waved before turning back to the girls while they waited for the teacher to continue with the class.
Esmie would probably respond with "Kaihe would be great" but I think based on their vocals that Axel would be best. He has a similar voice. Kaihe would obviously have "You're Welcome" because, come on, it's the sample voice! Iseul would likely have Moana's roles. Esmeralda needs to have "God Save The Outcasts" from Hunchback for sure. 100% needs be be used.

He knew the "every good boy deserves fudge" and "face" guidelines, but that was about it. He couldn't remember what notes looked like what on paper, but he was glad that they were going after that first to help students. After all, they would likely read straight from the sheet music. The first few lessons would likely be simple songs like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star or something of a similar nature. It wouldn't be long until everyone was starting on the songs and getting ready for the later half of the term when they'd start going over the concert songs. He hoped so much that he'd be able to get a solo for "Friend Like Me" from Aladdin or "Go The Distance" from Hercules. She was excited to learn sheet music as she had no idea how to. She wanted a role in the music industry, either Bollywood or Hollywood or even on the stage, so she knew it was vital to be able to read sheet music for roles. When he mentioned a concert of disney songs, she was keen for a solo role. Something like "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas or "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog. Students began taking notebooks out and Meera followed along. Mister Hardwick was drawing lines on the board and he was likely going to start describing reading sheet music. She began sketching what he had on the board and was ready to write notes to go with it so she could go back to it later if it was on any test.

Waylon was happy to hear it was Disney songs for the concert, as he was confident with whatever role he'd receive. Hell, if he was told to sing a female role he'd take it. He loved Disney and singing but he'd take any role, because he knew he was so versatile. He already knew about sheet music, since he wanted to be on the stage, but he'd sit through the lessons anyway and write notes. If someone else needed help, like Esmeralda for example, or the boys near him, he'd be able to offer assistance. Maybe they'd do their own karaoke concerts at the Pub during Freetime, since the Pub did have "Disney Karaoke Nights" on Mondays. He was keen to get out of classes for a drink at the pub, it didn't even need to be alcoholic, he just wanted to be social.
"Any role is a good role, I'm not going to say anything yet. Don't know what songs we'll even have anyway," he stated quietly as people around him started arguing who would have the solo for something from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, or Frozen.

Autumn was surprised to hear that Esmeralda and the girl behind them, Meera, shared the same major. It didn't bother her, she just didn't expect it. She had so many ideas of what song she'd want, duet or solo or group, but she didn't want to get her hopes up. If she was selected for something she wanted, it'd be great, but she'd be happy enough to just have a solo to begin with. She knew a little about sheet music but she had not done it in years and was rusty.
"Have you guys dealt with sheet music before?" she asked the girls. She was curious to see if she was the only one of the three that knew sheet music or whether one of the others were more fluent in it than she was.
Iseul listened to Autumn and was lucky it wasn't a complex question. "I don't know about it," she said slowly, trying her best to annunciate every word and not have it sound too "Engrish" like. She began frantically writing notes down, preferring having a lot of her notes in Korean and the music bars as quickly as she could copy them down.

Axel agreed with Waylon in not choosing a role just yet, because they weren't even going to do anything related to the concert just yet. Mister Hardwick only said he'd be choosing roles leading up to the concert songs, but said nothing about which ones other than Disney. That being said, there were a lot of good options to choose from, but likely some that would be missed out on. Such examples like "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" from Lilo and Stitch. He did love that song though.

He didn't understand sheet music, so he wanted to put all his attention into the notes on the board. He shushed some of the boys behind him for talking too loudly over Mister Hardwick and was about to turn around and smack them when they were silenced by the teacher. He wanted to do his best in choir because singing was something he wanted to do. Anything musical theater based was his go-to at this point.
