Ootori_K The two of them crossed over another of the wooden bridges and looped behind the rocky outcropping, where there was another rounded entrance, this one reminiscent in shape of butterfly wings. Kyouya brushed back some of the dangling vines, allowing her to enter before he did. "Aside from being pretty and relaxing? Yes, actually. They're excellent pollinators. We've tried to maintain as much biological diversity as possible, so that the system is self-sustaining. It isn't entirely, of course, but every little bit helps, and the sustainability cuts down on the cost. It costs more to start up that way, but it's good for long-term." The smoothie glass vanished quickly from where Kyan set it down -- and Kyouya was pleased to note that even in this remote area of the park, the service was still up to the very high standards he expected. "No, you're definitely on the right track. It's tricky balancing how much to start with and how much to plan to expand, especially when you don't have a big cushion of experience or backers." The area behind the outcropping was quiet and still, aside from birdsong and the occasional trill of insects, and of course the delicate fluttering of butterflies throughout. "Over here," he beckoned, and brought her to the side of a large tree. Under its canopy was a long but narrow windowed box, filled with chrysalises of all sizes and colors. Most were still, but just a few had iridescent wings peeking out, and one lone butterfly sat perched inside, furling and unfurling crumpled wings to stretch and dry them. "Oh, the security? Yes, they're trained as lifeguards. But actually, our regular lifeguards spend most of their time in the water. They're intended to blend into the rest of the crowd, for the most part, to keep the tropical wilderness illusion going. You won't find them hard to spot if you know what you're looking for, though." It wasn't difficult; aside from the obvious ease at which they swam, there was a very common pair of red swimsuits that made its appearance throughout the resort, one in a male cut, one in a female cut. (( MT? I would love to continue this if you would like, but I need to head now. )) ( Of course. wink )
They really did think of everything. It was astounding really. 'And here I'm just worried about the casino passing it's pre-opening inspection.' Kyandii leaned over one of the bridge railings to peer down at the koi that swam over, most likely thinking it was feeding time. "Hm... let me guess, you take full advantage of solar panels for energy consumption as well then?" She leaned back away from the railing and flashed him a questionable grin as they continued on. It was a dome.
This little excursion was supposed to be insightful on improving her on business, and while Kyouya was doing nothing short of a wonderful job at it, Kyandii was feeling surprisingly depressed? 'No.' She berated herself. 'Stupid.' She had thought for sure she had given her casino all her utmost attention, down to the floor mates for the employee's to stand on. Perhaps that was just it though. She had been more focused on taking care of her future employee's and guests that she hadn't given enough thought to how to keep the casino running stably as the Ootori's did with their resort. "It's a shame I didn't meet you before I started long-term construction on the casino." Although her attention was directed elsewhere, the worry in her brow was very much apparent.
The lifeguard situation was humorous, in a way. Having not spotted them, or anyone close to appearing as such... she was convinced they were part ninja. "I suppose it's easy to overlook them when you're busy having fun or just have no need for that insurance." So far she had only been swimming in the early parts of the morning by herself though. She had no trouble swimming, so she hadn't even thought to look around for lifeguards at the time. Still, the security aspect was assuring at the very least. Nice to know you could let your guard down when you're on vacation.
Her mood seemed to escalate again when motioned over to box and she eagerly peered through the glass at the soon-to-be butterflies. Abruptly she pointed to one of the one's whose wings were just barely peeking out. "That's me." A lot of the one's still tightly woven together could easily be applied to most people their age, but... "I like to think I've been handed enough experiences to have earned at least that." Her eyes turned to him curiously then. "Which one is you?"

"Yes and no," Kyouya said thoughtfully, with a glance at the aforementioned dome. "We do use solar power as part of the heating system for the water, but overall, it's still less efficient than regular electricity. It's a good supplement, and we've been keeping on top of the developments in the field, so as soon as something comes up that works more efficiently, it'll be installed." Did he detect that note of depression? Hard to say -- Kyan was good at putting on a cheerful yet wry expression, and although Kyouya was familiar with her, he'd noticed how variable her moods could be. He considered for a long moment. "If you want, maybe we can sit down and go over it at some point -- not for what you're doing now, obviously, because it's already under construction. It never hurts to think ahead, though, and we could discuss second-stage or second-facility plans." It was an honest offer, but he couldn't resist adding, "Though that should probably come out of your points, of course." He made a soft noise of agreement. "They're supposed to be unobtrusive, so that people can just focus on relaxing. It works for the most part, though there are always some paranoid parents. Hence the uniform, even though it's not extremely obvious." Leaning against one of the railings, arms folded, he surveyed the box. Questions like this were not ones he liked to answer -- they defined him too tightly, bared too much. "Difficult to say, really. I don't generally compare myself to insects," he demurred lightly. But that soft deflection would only hold for a moment, to give him a chance to deliberate over implications. "That one," he settled on, after that moment's thought, pointing with a long, slim finger. The chrysalis itself was simply average-sized, and a neutral brown that blended it in with most of the others -- but it shook with a fierce determination as the butterfly inside struggled to release itself from its confines.

She raised a brow lightly at the reluctance, and might have been the tiniest bit questionable over the apparent difficulty. The amateur business woman didn't see it. "Hm... I always thought metaphoric references were more enjoyable to think about." Kyandii made a point of leaning in further to examine the chosen embodiment curiously anyway. When it didn't appear that the insect within was going to stop wiggling about anytime soon, the third year smiled in amusement. "Strong-willed and robust?" The barrier was curious, but at this stage... also very weak. Still, she wondered what could possibly be holding him back. Kyouya, that was. "He'll go far I'm sure."
A comfortable silence fell, the third year content with staring at the specimen's though the look seemed to eventually drift into a more distant gaze as her thoughts went back to their previous conversation. The expressive female couldn't control her thoughtful expressions though that appeared to switch between very briefly troubled, stubbornness, and confidence. Then cycle around once more with whatever inner on-going's were happening within her head. "This casino has to be a success." She might not have the history, or the connections, or (apparently) the extensive knowledge of self-sustainment and developmental growth. But she was confident that no matter what was thrown at her, she'd figure out a way through it. That was just the type of person she was.
Her resolve seemed a little more stable when she finally turned her gaze back to him with that smile of hers. "Actually, since you're offering and all, I think I'll take you up on that offer as well." Then paused and smiled a bit innocently. "Oh, and I'll pay you Ootori. But not in points."

There was a soft beat, before he said matter-of-factly, without quite looking at her, "Analogies can be entertaining, but I find that they can be too limiting. They capture a facet, but never the full nature, and operating on them can occasionally cause significant misunderstandings, if the analogy is only partial." A very carefully played moment of true candor; he wondered if she understood the message. I try not to limit myself with shorthand; it means I could make mistakes. That moment of seriousness evaporated, though, with one of those calm smiles. He shot her a sideways glance at the compliment, perhaps just a little bit flattered, with a touch of self-deprecation underscoring it. "Thank you. I'd like to think so." Considering her selection, he observed lightly, "And you, taking a moment to gather your strength before stepping out into the larger world. A wise choice, preparing before facing the unknown." He let the silence lapse, quietly observing the butterflies as if mulling over a more complex idea that they'd offered him, until she spoke again. "And if it isn't?" At this point, he did turn to look at her, challenging her assumption just slightly. "What will you do then? Do you have a contingency plan?" The corner of his mouth quirked up. "We can discuss that too." A fleeting, sharply amused light flicked into his eyes, and was quickly extinguished -- just what had he found so funny? But he simply said, with quiet assurance, "With the proceeds from the first stage of your venture? I'd find that acceptable."

Kyandii took the explanation with a curious, yet somewhat blank stare. She supposed she never took the analogies quite seriously to begin with to think about it in such a deep manner, but to each their own. On top of that, she had always been the type to take things in a more positive manner, obvious joking and teasing aside. "Hm?" Her eyes followed his to the one she had picked out and she grinned. "Alright, I suppose I get it. Because I think you're misunderstanding mine." She leaned in and tapped the glass lightly, nothing enough to startle the specimen's on the other side. "You see, clearly mine is just being lazy."
Still she wondered about his words, thought about the metamorphosis a little more seriously. But said thought only brought feelings of insecurity, not quite a feeling she liked. "In this case, I wonder what the larger world really is though?" Or what the cocoon represented in her own life. She mentally brushed the topic aside, intending to avoid what she had ultimately started.
A lot of the male's expressions slipped past her observation, time and time again, but simply because she was looking for some kind of reaction from her words, she actually had noticed that sliver of something. Her lip quirked a bit, curiously--- what had he been thinking? "If aforementioned venture is a success, we'll discuss." Kyandii let it slide for now, fully intent on getting back to those negotiations when the time called for it.
The senior clasped her hands behind her back loosely and shrugged then, attention diverted elsewhere as she lingered on his challenging words. "It was never intended for my venture to get this far to begin with. It's... almost... always been about the challenge of 'how far can you go?'. I'm confident it'll succeed, and I love what I do and I'm good at it, but there's nothing but the challenge tying me to the business world. I'm admittedly afraid I'll just lose interest if that small chance of it failing actually happens." Money had been something of importance and need when she started this particular hobby, and when she suddenly found herself alone, discovered herself continuing that business much in the manner that she went to ABR--- to kill time. "I don't know. I need goals." They drove her to accomplishment more--- but they needed a reward, and that so-called 'contingency plan' needed to be a goal in itself as well. "What should I--" No.
Something stopped her from asking him even that simple question, her in-dependency, and something else she couldn't place, flaring to life. Suddenly that trademark grin of hers was back and sheepish looking. "Sorry." At least it sounded genuine... and it wasn't often that word came from the girl's mouth either. "I was rambling. I'll figure it out. I always do." She motioned the entrance/exit lightly then with that same usual smile. "Is the tour on-going?"

"Hm. Lazy? Lazy would be never bothering to emerge at all," Kyouya countered lightly. "Death from stagnation, ne?" He knew what he'd meant by the larger world -- after high school, after college -- some of that was predictable, some of it was not. While Kyouya prided himself on taking the long view, he was all too aware of the large number of unknowns awaiting him, even if he did have a name and reputation as support. Where would he be, outside the shelter of his family's wings? Still, he mulled over her response about the business, and her reasons, for several heartbeats before responding. "Only about the challenge?" he asked. It was indifferently said, but there was something of steel underneath it, try as he might to guard it from view. "Interesting. That seems so ephemeral." Those dark, grey-brown eyes shifted back towards the glass-fronted box. "Much like butterflies, I suppose." He was half-poised to answer that half-asked question, but when she cut herself off, he did as well, and returned her smile with that calm one of his. "No need to apologize. I was interested. And of course, the tour continues." Though he had noticed it was just the two of them at this point, the others all having wandered their separate ways. He offered his arm to the birthday girl. "Shall we?"

If Kyandiice had a response to his earlier comments, they were immediately shoved aside in turn of the surprisingly cold sense of dread that wash through her at that look. No, she hadn't missed it, the icy look of what she assumed was disappointment and/or detest. She was not new to such looks, she had seen a lot of them, and because of this... was in fact far more sensitive to them then she preferred to be. But why him?
It was probably one of the few rare times that the usually expressive third year had a nearly completely blank look as she observed him, partly in shock and mostly from confusion. She had obviously said something to have caused it, that was very much apparent. But what? What did she say that could have possibly upset him? Was she over-reacting? Quite possibly. Still, to get that sort of reaction from someone whom she had just given serious answers to for once, and had subconsciously opened up even the tiniest bit to--- it was very disheartening.
Any other person might have let it go, walked away and pretended it never transpired, like she probably should have done right then and there. But even when he offered her that arm, she just couldn't bring herself to take it. "In what way?" She was frustrated, unknowing of the why and quite possibly with that calm smile of his that she felt was mocking her after that cold indifference. "If you have a problem with something I said, tell me." There was absolutely no way she could pretend that there wasn't tension, or that she might as well have possibly offended him without knowing.

"It's an imperfect analogy, as they all are," Kyouya pointed out, apparently unfazed by the tension. He might even have been expecting it, especially since he hadn't managed a perfect cover of his emotions. Given that she'd faced off with him, he leaned back against the railing, giving her his undivided, razor-sharp attention. "If all that holds you is challenges, how does that differ from a butterfly, flitting from flower to flower in search of its next sip of nectar? True, with their pollination, fruit might set and seeds might grow, but none of that is done because the butterfly wills it. It is merely a happy side effect." He shrugged easily, no obvious mockery evident, though that calm voice grew even calmer, if possible, perhaps drawing strength and a subtle resonance from that indirect articulation of his own beliefs. "I believe I'm the last person who can argue against the thrill of the challenge," he said levelly. "I certainly have enough of my own." He smiled softly, glasses only partially obscuring his eyes. "I simply don't see the point in doing things only because you can. There's no profit in that long-term, just short-term satisfaction. You fritter away your time and energy chasing from flower to flower. What do you have to show for it?"

Unlike him, Kyandii stood stiff with anxiety, and guarded. "There is no difference." She agreed, still failing to see why her lifestyle was such a problem to him. She hadn't given any indication that she was anything but that aforesaid fleeting butterfly in that analogy tale of his. Just what the hell was she supposed to be understanding from this? Was there some other secret meaning behind that analogy of his? What did he want to hear from her? More so, she honestly didn't see a problem with living her life as such. "What do I have to show for it? Show for what? To who?" His words just didn't make sense to her, and she only found herself more frustrated with each passing moment because of it. "I enjoy being that butterfly, it keeps me busy and I learn new things that way. " Was that wrong? "I have enough money to live peacefully for the rest of my life plus some, the only profit I seek at this point is the one's I can only make through experience and the people around me." She bit out, keeping very tight reigns on that infamous temper of hers... almost. Kyandii was far too unsettled to keep up with the analogy though.
Clenching her fist with irritation, she pinned him with a perturbed look. "I don't understand why you care. No one else seems to care what I do or how I do it." The temperamental third year was used to what few people she was close with just going with whatever she did, or just humoring her whenever she wanted to do something. It was rare for anyone to question (and furthermore show displeasure in) her decisions. This whole conversation just felt foreign to her. "What the hell else am I supposed to do?"

The balled-up fist did not escape him. Good, I've gotten her attention. Whether or not Kyouya would end up with a black eye for his pains -- he doubted it would be anything further, as his bodyguards were always to hand -- was a question he'd soon have answered, he supposed. "For what, and to whom?" He repeated her questions as if confirming with mild disbelief that she even needed to ask. Rapid calculations flashed past before he answered, with careful, deliberate neutrality. "I suppose you wouldn't need to ask that question if the answer were obvious to you. Then again, assuming your statement that no one seems to care is actually true, perhaps that makes a certain amount of sense." "I take it you've no plans to build a legacy for whatever children and grandchildren you might have, or for whatever interests you to perpetuate it, and no interest in leaving an enduring mark on the world when you're gone. There's no benefit in that to you?" That last question was hardly one at all, but very nearly a statement, demanding she contradict him. There was a soft beat as he let it sink in, and let her draw her own conclusions. Push.He glanced around the butterfly garden, surrounded by the interlacing of so many small potentials. Everything here was carefully selected and intertwined to bring forth as much of its capability as possible -- and yet here in front of him was an ongoing mystery. Why? There were so many undertones to that question. "As for what you're supposed to do, I don't believe I can answer that question for you. It isn't my place to tell you -- or anyone else I'm not paying for a service -- what to do." That calm smile reappeared, though something in the matter-of-fact nature of his tone indicated that he was still very much taking the conversation seriously. "But I'll admit to being curious. If you're truly unconcerned about supporting your lifestyle at this point, what will you do with the rest of your potential?"

While the male in front of her seemed to come to some kind of conclusion, Kyandii still remain in the dark in regards to that specific connection he had made and she, for some reason, was apparently missing. Again, he wasn't going to answer her though. For awhile she remained silent, the only source of reaction that she was still listening to him being the series of expressions crossing her face, none of which were new to the discussion. Except perhaps, a small amount of wonder laced with conflict.
At some point during his interrogation, her once clenched hand had found solace in clutching the locket hidden beneath the fabric of her clothing, the only indication of it's existence being the thin chain lining her neck. Something said had obviously struck another cord.
Well, at the very least, she might have received some of those answers, whether or not his words were intended to give them to her. Though even more questions piled on as soon as those few were answered.
She answered one of his questions with another blank stare though, half-inclined to answer with a simple "I don't know." despite her minor hate for the phrase. But really? She didn't. Why did she need to apply her... as he put it, potential anywhere? "Of what use is my prowess to anyone else?" Or perhaps a better question to ask was, "Why should I extend those skills when the majority of the people I know either don't care or have no use of them?" Or both. She had set out to gain what she wanted from this venture long before, so she could support the people she cared about. What she did further was of no use to them now though.
The topic of children seemed to bother her more though, and it took her longer to answer. "Legacy?" Enduring mark? "Not really...?" She sounded unsure herself, as if questioning(again) if that was wrong. It wasn't something she hadn't thought about though, but every time it came to mind.. it hadn't been a priority. There was always the possibility that her children wouldn't take an interest and she didn't want to be the one to tell them, no, they couldn't become an astronaut. Or a firefighter. Or an evil dictator. Whatever their sweet little minds could come up with. "That's not my decision to make, that's for them to decide..." Oh.
But they wouldn't have that option to begin with if she let her business venture slip away.
One of the lightbulb's flickered to life and she was forced to turn away abruptly in her moment of ********>

Kyouya was not one for sharing his own thoughts -- at least, not easily. If she followed his train of thought, fine, and if she didn't, that wasn't unusual. He was generally ahead of everyone else anyway. But her answer to his question simply floored him, egoist though he might claim to be. If she didn't understand the drive, the need to constantly create, improve, excel, and then share the product of that drive -- well -- There really wasn't anything he could say. He'd limited himself before, staying inside the frame crafted by his father and brothers, trying and failing to satisfy that drive by being the perfect model of a third son. With Tamaki's help, he'd broken that limitation, felt the world in his inexperienced grasp, and known that he'd be able to do anything if he chose it. It was pure exhilaration and a life-changing moment -- as if it were the first breath of pure air taken by a drowning man. That she even had to ask the question of who else could use her prowess, her assumption that no one else would care or have no use -- it was a fundamental difference between the two of them. He had no such qualms. Perhaps he was actually egotistical to the core -- he knew that anything he undertook would matter to someone, even in a small way; it was his will, his choice that the things he did were the ones that mattered. Other people did not determine his value to them; he determined his value to them. Kyouya had no words to explain it to her, and the complexity of emotion that accompanied it -- disbelief, shock, sadness, disappointment, and a touch of impatience at the profound waste of her obvious intelligence and talent -- were too much for him to handle at once. He fell back into silence, visibly controlling his expression. But apparently something he'd said had gotten through. Perhaps this conversation hadn't been a complete disaster, though he hadn't intended to upset her quite like that. ... Well, perhaps he had, if she truly hadn't been thinking, he amended to himself. Something, anything, to get her to think in broader strokes than just what surrounded her moment-to-moment. He detached himself from the railing and walked over, pausing just at her turned-away shoulder -- a quiet pillar of confident strength, though still somewhat bemused at that underlying difference. "Are you all right?"

Kyandii had taken to staring hard at ground, one arm wrapped around herself and the other still very much occupied with the locket as she mentally berated herself.
It wasn't like she had purposely disregarded those few key pieces of information. In fact, she just hadn't thought far enough ahead to even consider it. And why would she? She had already thought she was giving all her attention and concern to the people around her. But somehow in her act of trying to be selfless, it turned out she could be very much selfish at the same time. Subconscious or not. "No." Her voice was laced with that same irritability she had earlier, but at the least, it was no longer directed at him.
Of course she wasn't all right. "I'm irritated." Upset with herself for being an idiot who didn't see it sooner, or even when she thought her usefulness had been used up. There was still a considerable amount of doubt that her kids would find any interest in her beginning business too, but still... "Confused." If she had been misleading herself with something like this, what else could she possibly have the wrong mindset over? What else was she completely blind to? "Somber." Had she disappointed the two that meant more to her then anything in the world? They probably wouldn't understand, but...
If she hadn't gone straight to anger, she might've actually cried.
"...lost."
This revelation completely changed everything. Five minutes ago, her business had been only a challenge. Something for her to work on in her spare time and see how far she could take. She hadn't considered it to be a long term commitment. The word made her flinch ever so slightly. Kyandii had subconsciously jumped into something she suddenly wasn't sure she could pull off. How could such a small thing cause her such an overwhelming amount of momentary stress? Where was that endless amount of confidence she usually had? Because it could've been damn useful as this point. "Not a big deal. Just another bump in the road." She sounded so unconvinced that she found disgust in her own words. "It's... just another challenge." This time she sounded more believing. "I can do it."
Kyandii finally turned to look at him with tired look, and perhaps slightly worried? And suddenly found herself at loss. What was she supposed to say? "I'm... sorry." Again she was apologizing. For what? Being an idiot? "I took my frustration out on you." Even if she still wasn't sure he was completely undeserving of it. She fell silent briefly again, thoughtful. "I don't understand why it took you of all people for me to realize something so little." Or why she had to lose her temper like a child in front of the person she had a growing fondness over. Another realization came over her then and she ran a hand over her face in dry humor, a lifeless laugh coming from her. "Getting pissed whenever something I do is questioned. No wonder no one bothers to stop me." That hadn't stopped Kyouya though, who kept pushing. She wondered if that was just in his nature, or if it was something else. "God, I'm sorry." What else had she screwed up in her life that she had completely overlooked. "Can we go back?" The girl had too much to think about and not enough time to continue wasting away Kyouya's.

Kyouya waited as she went through her emotions, still quiet, still remaining at her shoulder, rather than forcing her to face him as well as herself. "You can," he agreed, and there was no trace of mockery in that calm voice. It was completely sincere, and -- oddly enough for one who showed so little emotion most of the time -- somehow firmly supportive. His glasses flashed momentarily, but only just, and cleared again. "That didn't mean I didn't deserve it," he pointed out. "I'm a host, and this is my family's resort. The last thing I should be doing is making one of my guests uncomfortable. I apologize." He paused at the question, then offered her one of those quiet smiles. "To the beginning of the conversation, or poolside?" Very gentle teasing. He took her free hand, and set it in the crook of his arm with a soft squeeze -- possibly the closest to a hug that the Ootori boy would allow himself. "Perhaps both?"

"I can." Repeating it to herself seemed to help, but hearing it from the male might have helped solidify her resolve a little more. Still, there were doubts racing through her head, fresh and in need of organizing fully.
For some reason, she didn't like the apology spoken. "Don't apologize." No matter how downhearted she was at the moment, she couldn't help but have noticed the change to the host's demeanor. But that was just it, she wasn't speaking to a host at the moment, was she? She was speaking to Kyouya. It might have been a rocky discussion, but at least some part of her knew it was something that she needed to hear, even if it was still hard to accept and something she needed to give a lot of consideration to fully understand. If he hadn't overstepped those boundaries as a host... would she really have learned anything? "I like this Oo--- Kyouya better anyway."
That trademark smile of hers returned, albeit weak, but a sign that she was still very much the same person, but perhaps just exhausted. "Both." In her agreement, the female tightened her hold on his arm as they departed from the butterfly garden. "I wonder how many points I'm being charged this time?" At the least, she was still up for her usual sass.
