If your into shonen type anime I suggest, Hunter x Hunter 2011 (its longer than the original) and Yu Yu Hakusho, Sengoku Basara is also good (based off the demon kings video game series)

Great Question, of course what Anime to watch depends on what you are looking for in a show. Here are some shows to consider:
1. Ah! My Goddess - Romantic and plenty of comedy
2. Pokemon - Cute, fun, comedy, adventure
3. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles - Fun, cute, comedy, adventure, fantasy, Romantic - I'm a bit bias on this one since it's one of my all time favorite series. You can tell by my Syaoran dressed Avatar and a drawing of princess Sakura in my signature.
4. Kaze no Stigma - Fun, adventurous, Magic battles
5. Yu-Gi-Oh! - Adventure, friendship, magic
6. Birdy the Mighty - friendship, magic. adventure
7. xxxholic - adventure, friendship, magic, comedy
8. Sailor Moon - Friendship, comedy, adventure - A great place to start

The on-going dilemma: What to watch next!
Here are some of my recommendations:
1. Rurouni Kenshin- funny, quirky, with a serious streak. There's a reason why this one is considered a classic!
2. Rave Master- funny and quirky to the max! Warning: this can get addicting!
3. Avatar: The Last Airbender- It isn't a Japanese anime, but an American one. I was pleasantly surprised by it.
4. Tales of the Abyss- This is the anime from my all-time favorite video game. The adaptation is really well done!
