It seems like whenever I've ever tried to pursue anything artistic, my dreams have ended up getting stomped on because when I was young, I made the mistake of leaning on my parents too much for support when I should have been stubborn and stood on my own two feet. Whenever I tried to talk to them about how I felt, they've never realized it. But these are the things I've observed Naysayings: Mom: "Get out of your fantasy world" "Stop dreaming and live in the real world" Dad: "I think art should only be a hobby"(<<--I've grown up hearing that so , I started believing it, but not anymore)). I wish I could go back and tell myself, "Don't listen to what he says. You don't know if you're gonna pass or fail art[in high school/college]unless you try it. I felt so hurt when they treated me like a rebel when I was drawing a back, for a figure study. And when my relatives say I should live with my parents, "I think, 'Absolutely not! It's a struggle right now to keep my dreams alive. I have untapped potential that if nurtured right, can explode into something mind blowing." I'm trying to find a place where there are people who are positive, but it feels like everything is taking so long, and I feel impatient.

I know exactly how you feel and I would say just politely ignore them and do what you love. Parents have an inherit nagging system and are probably just worried about you, forgetting that you have a mind of your own. If you listen to them, it will just come back to bite you later. It's also a good idea to pursue what you are good at and passionate about!

Your parent's are probably not trying to tell you that you shouldn't pursue art or more not practice art. For some parents they just find it hard to comprehend a secure income in the future with art. All they want is the best for you and that's probably why your Dad thinks that art should just be a hobby. They want to know that you will have a secure income in the future when they are gone, that you can take care of yourself. My parents have told me the same thing, that art should just be a hobby and they wanted me to be a accountant/lawyer/doctor. I have contemplated this and I think it is possible to practice art for a hobby even if it is not your career.
