I think that's just part of being an artist. 3nodding

I follow some people on Tumblr who are really, really fantastic. Webcomic artists who really do have fantastic art, professional artists who have gotten somewhere, etc. And even they have existential crisises.

As far as getting through it... I dunno. I either try to work through it, or drop art for awhile and come back at a later date when I'm feeling better. I'm not sure there is a one-size-fits-all answer to that question.

But if you want to work through it... Go back and do some studies. Stop focusing on polish and try focusing on the basics -- not just anatomy (although that helps) but the elements of design, perspective, things like that. Try a different medium that you haven't used in awhile but remember you liked. Find a lovely photograph and just copy it. ***GESTURE DRAW*** Even if you hate the results... who cares, they were just studies! rofl You LEARNED something doing it, even if it's not immediately apparent.

That's one thing that the 100 day challenge has taught me: the value of doing studies. Of not looking for a finished picture, or something fantastic, just looking for practice at getting down something with a solid shape on paper.

So yeah, don't wallow in the depression, work through it. Afraid your art isn't any good? Then make it better. And eventually you'll notice improvement... and you won't think like your art is no good any more.

All easier said than done, I know. But that's my two cents. :3

I get that way, like my art just stinks >.<
I usually have to work my way through it, I try and keep drawing. Eventually I do get through it. It may help to look at previous art you have done to see what you;ve improved on.

Hope you work your way through this soon ^.^

I get like that too, especially if I look at too great art. X.x Usually one should feel inspired by other people's great drawings, but for that doesn't work... -___-; I just feel like everyone is so much better than me. >.>

I'm not sure what I do to get over it though... ^^; Usually just drawing something unimportant and not really trying to make it nice helps. Or I just take a break from drawing, then the next time I draw it's okay again. One thing that works very well for my motivation is when I look back at old art to see that I've actually gotten better. xD Since it often feels like I'm never getting any better. It also might help to try to draw/ make something different from what you usually do. If you usually draw people in manga style, maybe you should try drawing a realistic dog? Or maybe you shouldn't draw at all, maybe you should take a photo or make a sculpture? Or maybe you should bake a cake? >w<

I get that way too. I think every artist does, but it also makes you work harder. smile

Sometimes whenever i feel that way, i try to draw or make something i'll be proud of, and take a moment to show it off and see what kind of feedback you get. smile

I get that way a lot, and I start feeling like my art is worthless and that maybe I shouldn't draw.
Conversely, looking at great art makes me feel better. Good artists inspire me to work harder. I look at their work through the years and how they've improved and it reminds me that although my art may be cruddy now, I can improve and make it better.

Drako you are amazing ok if your art is not good then my art should just be thrown into a landfill

Often.... specially in my profession. I sometimes break down and cry, because I really feel like I'm not in my league and no good at anything. Which isen't true... I do have talent, but its often hard for me to remind myself that when I'm down, I really let peoples comments affect me more than I should. I often find myself relying on other people to tell me how good I am in compairison to other people, instead of judging on myself, and how I feel like I'm progressing.

For tips how to get out of it. I often keep a happy optimist friend around for things like that. Someone who can help cheer me up and remind me I'm not that bad, when I really need it. I accourse only go and see that person when I'm really really down, *to not abuse there help to much haha XD* but it always helps having people around you who can be honest but point out the best in everything. 3nodding

Depend of my mood but sometimes when I look at some great art , I feel so inspirated! I want to draw , I feel good and full of energy, but sometimes it's the opposite : I feel bad, I think I'll never do something as good as the others do.

I can't really give you "THE" advice that will make you feel always on top (because I don't know it myself, if someone know it, he's a genius and it will be very appreciated if he share)
may be try to draw without pressure, do something "simple" but take your time to do it as good as you can , don't try something difficilut you'll botch (<flattering your ego and your self-esteem is important to go ahead with your art. Don't underestimate that.

I still get it all the time.

But the way to get through it is just to get better. I make it sound so easy, but really it's just a matter of not giving up. You will always feel like you're not good enough, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It means you are self critical and you have not hit the ceiling on improvement. Really, even if you are not feeling too great about your work, I wouldn't tell you to take a break from it. If you want to be great, you should be drawing everyday. Not as a chore, but for fun. You should get into the habit of drawing often, wherever you are. Who cares if people see you drawing at the park. It doesn't matter because in the long run, the people who are like that, are the people who become super amazing at what they do. Just keep at it, and don't worry. If you draw a lot already, you'll get there.

I get that a lot as well sweatdrop Usually when I get that "artistic depression", I might mope at first, but I try do do something different at the end. What I mean is, let's say I started to paint something, the painting was just NOT working out, so I stop. I either do one of two things, if I am moderately upset at the current progress, then I try to look at other people's art works as inspiration (it may give me an idea on what to do to the painting next, you never know). Although, in the times that I really just hat what I am doing, I still stop at the painting (I'll continue the work when I feel better), but I go into other mediums, I draw, I knit, I may make some jewelry? Then again, if I don't want to do anything art related, I read a book, watch a video/movie, or play games.
I guess what ever you, if you don't want the negative feelings to effect your painting, drawing, etc, then take a brake! Maybe you are a little over worked or something, don't even know it. Then again, if you do want the anger and/or other feelings to be present, then you should keep at (work the feelings into the medium and let it out!!! )

Ah yes i know that feeling all too well. Recently i have been dropping in and out of depression but i just try to overcome it by drawing whatever comes to mind. I really suck at trying to sell my work for commissions too. At first its almost painful because i have no motivation but then i get some fresh air, play some good music and bulldoze through it. I learned that it doesnt really help my to keep my anger and frustration in so i just draw it out sometimes ^^ At the end of the day everyone has different styles and its not wise to compare your art to others. Instead i try to gain experience/knowledge by asking what technique the artist uses, how they blend their colours a certain way ect..ect.. Instead of feeling bad about my art(i suck at painting for instance ..orz) i look at others to inspire me to paint better and i try to find forums, contests or something to help me gain motivation :3
