Do they have to eat brains like their true illithid parents, and what do you think makes a half illithid what it is as opposed to someone with the illithid heritage feats out of 'Complete Psionic'?

cause its important to know if they have brains as a required diet or not. the book doesn't really say.

Since we're in non-canonical "what do you think" territory, I'd say yeah. The only thing that makes them half-illithids instead of true illithids is the lack of a human host, I don't think that should change their diet any.
