Ok so some of you may know I have been worried about Deedee on her raw diet. I was going to switch her to a good grainless kibble, but was convinced I should stick to raw. Most of her health problems shouldn't be linked to food. However, now I have noticed another problem with her. Her teeth. She came to us with bad teeth. My parents aren't the type to do much research into dog care, I was just a kid, so with us the only dental care she got was a very occasional raw chicken neck. So as much as I don't like admitting it, my dog has terrible teeth and it's my fault. Also, I think aging may have something to do with it, but she has lost a few at the front, and some are getting wobbly/weaker (her back ones seem to be intact though). So being concerned about her teeth, which are beyond just tartar, and worried about whether I can give her everything she needs, I will be switching to a pre made raw food. With the amount she needs, it will only cost maybe just a bit of $20 per month. The food is made by
Dr. Billinghurst, so I trust it. We have bought a pack to try on both dogs, and looking at the ingredients it contains everything they need to be fed, just the bones are grinded up, and I feel more confident. She can still chew bones though, I just don't think she is going to be able to deal with them every day, and only chicken bones now. So about once or twice a week I will feed her chicken necks, to stop her teeth getting any worse, because she does like chicken necks, I want her to keep those muscles she uses to chew working well and because chicken necks are probably the softest RMB I can get for her. As well as that, she will still get her raw egg twice a week, and fish once a week, plus raw bits of meat when I am making Sparky's raw.
And yep, Sparky will be staying on home made raw. He does well on it, and I like having him chew the bones daily. And he really enjoys munching down a good chicken wing. Plus now that I have the pre made raw ingredients, well they are pretty simple to base a diet around, so I will cut out the ingredients and keep them with me just for if I ever feel like I could use some quick help when sorting Sparkys meat. Oh and the other reason besides the benefits for Sparky of why I want to continue home made raw with him... is well, I find it fun (which some people think is just plain weird, considering I am vego myself...). But I don't know, I guess I just like sorting out really healthy meals for them
and running around the house with chicken frames over my hands like glovesSo, both my dogs will still be on a raw diet, one is just going to be on a pre made, and have less bones. And only one type of bone. While Sparky will continue with how we have been going.
